I believe it is in the family farmers and small business operators best interest to abolish the
North American Free Trade Agreement (NAFTA). Evidence indicates that NAFTA works to the advantage of the multinational business interests, through their ability to manipulate prices against producers in all three countries. I have information that leads me to believe that NAFTA is being used by four major U.S. packing houses to help them control livestock prices to their advantage. I suspect, when livestock producers try to refuse unacceptable prices, the packing houses simply supply their livestock needs from the other countries until the rebelling livestock producers are forced to accept their manipulated prices; the same tactic is used in all three countries. I believe a Congressional investigation is warranted.
As if NAFTA has not done enough damage to our family farmers already, the Bush administration, and his Washington puppet politician cohorts, now are trying to expand NAFTA to include all of south America through their Free Trade Areas of the Americas agreement.

Financial Planning Toolkit Special Exemption for Family-Owned Businesses If qualified family-owned business interests (QFOBIs) make up more than 50 percent of your taxable estate, you may benefit from a special provision that can increase your total effective exemption from estate tax to $1.3 million. If an estate is eligible and elects to take the qualified family-owned business (QFOB) deduction, up to $675,000 of the adjusted value of QFOBIs may be deducted from the value of the estate. From the $675,000 maximum, you must subtract some of the amount that is effectively exempt from estate tax under the general provisions of the law. In combination with the applicable unified credit exclusion amount, up to $1.3 million of qualified family-owned business interests may be shielded from estate tax in 2002 and 2003. Since the general exemption amount is $1 million in 2002 and 2003, the "extra" exemption benefit for a small business is only $300,000 in 2002-2003.

Making a Family Budget Before you start planning for the cash needs of your new business, you must determine how much cash you will need to survive. You have to plan cash needs during the startup and first few months of your new business. It would be nice to think that your business will be profitable from the day you open the doors, but that's not realistic. The best way to start is to prepare a family budget schedule that shows where you spent your money in the last 12 months. It is advisable to use a monthly family budget schedule because expenses will fluctuate greatly from month to month. For example, if you have children in private school or college and the tuition is due twice a year, then those months will require additional cash. In your family budget schedule, include all the expenses that you have incurred on a monthly basis. These expenses range from home mortgage payments to vacations to doctor bills. When preparing the schedule, keep in mind the expenses that could be reduced or eliminated if needed. Included among the Business Tools is a family monthly budget sheet . This worksheet is an Excel 5.0 template. Because it's a template, you can use the worksheet over and over again and still retain an original copy of it.

http://www.westerncoloradobusiness.org/montezumacounty/

DEMOGRAPHICS
WORK FORCE EDUCATION INFRASTRUCTURE ... HOME
The economy of Montezuma County is about equally divided between tourism, agriculture and the provision of governmental services. The manufacturing, distribution, and external delivery of services sectors are relatively small. For a company considering locating in Montezuma County, the economic structure of the county is important because of the "big fish in a small pond" syndrome. That is, because of the relative impact of even a twenty person company moving into the area, the private and public powers in the county stand at the ready to assist in whatever ways necessary to aid and abet the relocation of a company to Montezuma County. A similar factor is at play in the labor market. Though there is not a large pool of highly skilled workers, there are sufficient trainable persons available, who once trained for a higher paying job, are most likely to stay with the employer as there are not a lot of opportunities in the area for high paying jobs. Additionally, the worker is particularly good because he has been trained by the employer in the ways preferred by the employer and doesn't come with methods from a former employer that are unacceptable to his current employer. As part of a community response, the vocational/technical school and the community college are prepared to offer special courses as requested by an employer. The small, owner-managed businesses which have located in Montezuma County have found the area to be a very good place to conduct business and have been extremely happy with the quality of life that brought them here in the first place.
