Technology And The Law Firm
by Brenda S. Fishbein Technology and computers are wonderful tools for most lawyers. Unfortunately, if you are an ineffective or disorganized attorney the new technology will not provide a remedy; computers will only make you ineffective and disorganized faster than before. As a member of the "over 45" group of lawyers, I can remember when the IBM Selectric typewriter was the greatest invention for the law office and when carbon paper (some of you are probably searching for that term in the dictionary) was the bane of every secretary's existence. I recall preparing a 30-page appellate brief, knowing that I would have only one opportunity to revise my arguments because my secretary was going to have to retype the entire 30 pages, but only once. I envied the large law firms that could afford a Wang. I was not resistant to the new technology. It just scared me to death. When I got my own computer for my desk my secretary had to teach me how to turn it on. I was afraid that if I pushed the wrong button I would break something. Then I had to learn all of the DOS commands. All of those "F number," "Alt" and "Ctrl" keys. I never would have survived without the plastic decoder above my keyboard. Windows 95 is heaven for me. I don't have to know anything. All I have to do is look at the pictures, point my mouse, and the computer does the rest. It has been a voyage of discovery. One time, by mistake, I hit "Ctrl D" instead of "Shift D," and the date appeared in my document. I have actually become quite proficient. I can prepare my own letters and pleadings; I can even use graphics to make tables for use as trial exhibits. If the office staff has left, I can still continue working on behalf of my clients. This, of course, is a mixed blessing.

Tobacco control enforcement turns serious By Jeffrey Barg Published March 1997 While there will be many more battles with the tobacco interests for the health of our children, we have reached a significant milepost, which required sustained concerted effort on the part of many talented and dedicated people, first to get the law passed and then to get it enforced. Most of this effort has been organized by the local tobacco control coalition, TEACH. Ordinance 732 prohibits the sale of tobacco to persons under 18 and requires photo ID of anyone appearing to be under 25-years-old. Age-of-sale warning signs must also be posted, and tobacco must be behind the counter or in a locked case or on the counter within three feet of an active register. And sale of loose cigarettes is prohibited. The public information initiative includes targeted mailings as well as television, radio, print and billboard advertising. The compliance checks have been a key component of the effort at its various stages. The first compliance checks identified the need for the law to be passed. The compliance checks after the law was passed and after merchants were given information about the law showed that there was a need to aggressively enforce the law. And future compliance checks will show how effective these enforcement actions have been.

Learning the Law at Hamline Excellent faculty, engaged students, and a supportive environment - these are what truly define a law school. Hamline University School of Law is all these things. It is a community of scholars dedicated to a unified purpose-to teach, explore, and learn the law. HUSL has achieved national visibility for our expertise in Alternative Dispute Resolution (6th in the nation); Law and Religion; Legal Research and Writing; and Advocacy and Trial Skills. The school has also developed significant offerings in Business Law; Public Law Government, and Ethics; and Child Advocacy and Family Law. Hamline's curriculum reflects the changing requirements of the legal profession by offering course concentrations, practicums, and clinics in some of the most timely topics. Law is more than a profession; it is the underpinning of civilization and as such it reflects the political, social, moral, and economic standards of society. A full understanding of the law must consider the purpose and consequences of particular rules and the processes by which the law is improved. Dean Ed Butterfoss says, "At Hamline, students consider the morality of law, ask hard questions about authority, discuss justice, and are challenged to reflect on their personal code of ethics. They have an obligation to serve the community." This sense of service to society at the local, national, and international levels is vital to Hamline's mission.

Remarks of Harvard University President Lawrence H. Summers
Harvard Business School Board of Directors of Associates
    Allston, Mass.
    February 22, 2002
So, between the two of us we had our work going for 24 hours day and it was a tad challenging for our research assistants. We had a very good time together and those were very good days. One of the things that I was very pleased about in coming back to the University was that I would have the opportunity to work with Kim at the Business School. I want to thank Dick Spangler for everything he does for the Business School and for the very strong support that he and Meredith have provided in many ways perhaps most substantially through the beautiful building in which we have gathered. I want to thank Ray and Gladie Gilmartin for their leadership over this group for the past few years. Ray and I got to know each other in Washington and at least from my point of view the periodic dialogues that we had on tropical disease, vaccines and pharmaceutical pricing were among the most pleasurable public-private interactions that I had a chance to have. Thank you very much for what you are doing. And I want to thank Rajat and Anita Gupta who are taking up the role of leadership in this group. But mostly I want to thank the faculty, the staff and the students of the Harvard Business School who are what make this such a very special institution and who really, I think, in so many ways are examples to business schools and business everywhere and as I will indicate in a few moments also to higher education in a whole set of very important respects.
