Stetson University College of Law
is Florida's first law school, and it has had a leading role in educating lawyers for over a century. Located in Gulfport , Florida, it is fully accredited by the American Bar Association and the American Association of Law Schools. The Master of Laws (LL.M.) program is a part of Stetson's regular academic credit program. The College will admit a limited number of select law school graduates to its Master of Laws Program beginning each year. Most LL.M. students will begin their studies upon commencement of the Fall semester in mid-August. However, it is also possible for graduates of U.S. law schools to begin in early January upon commencement of the Spring semester.

OUT OF BALANCE
WHY CAN'T LAW SCHOOLS TEACH ETHICS?
(Article dated 10/91, from Student Lawyer, a publication of the ABA Student Lawyer Section by Dale Moss) Comment: This article is rather old but it is the only one on the subject I am aware of. Even in the event there are more recent articles it is doubtful these serious problems going to the root of many of the legal profession's problems have been resolved. Fifteen minutes into the class precisely one student has spoken. The rest, with edgy apprehension, look down at the floor, the desks, their bookseverywhere but at their guest teacher. Although it sounds like a high-school session on personal hygiene, these averted faces actually belong to a class on professional responsibility at an American law school. Trying to draw the class out by playing a client seeking counsel, the instructor removes his jacket. "Do I have to take off my tie, too, to convince you? I'm a printer. Talk to me," he pleads. No dice. There is enough free-floating anxiety in this room to power a small city for a year, but not enough engagement, it seems, to get a minor league discussion going. Finally the teacher, himself a practicing attorney, throws up his hands in exasperation: "Lawyers are supposed to be helpful to people. If you disagree with this, please go to another school." Why is the course on professional ethics almost universally regarded as the dog of the law school hard to teach, disappointing to take, and often presented to vacant seats or vacant minds?

We appreciate that providing legal counsel is both demanding and time consuming. We also recognize that the demands of our practice must be balanced with other priorities. As a result, we consistently have expanded our resources so each attorney can maintain a desired balance between his or her own professional and personal goals. Associates are expected to bill 1950 hours a year, which includes time devoted to approved pro bono matters. We value everyone's opinion. Associates in particular have an active role in addressing firm issues and the development of firm policies. Monthly associate meetings provide an open forum in which associates discuss concerns among themselves that they then can raise with members of the board of directors. Associates are also active members of firm committees, helping to shape policy on topics such as recruiting objectives, pro bono commitments and technology purchases. These formal avenues of communication have created an open atmosphere in which even the newest associate soon learns to express his or her thoughts or concerns with senior members of the firm through informal means. Stepping up efforts to teach personal financial skills

    December 17, 2001
By Steve Daniels Reprinted with permission from Crain's Chicago Business.
Denise Wilson was on a financial road to nowhere. The 47-year-old Bellwood resident couldn't rein in her spending on "clothes I didn't need," and was bouncing checks regularly enough that her bank let her go as a customer early this year. "I live in T. J. Maxx," she says. A clerical worker at Dominick's Finer Foods, Ms. Wilson heard about financial classes being offered in Maywood and attended one in early November. The session inspired her to begin weekly budgeting. She hasn't been back to T. J. Maxx since, and she's had her bank account restored after repaying her bad-check debt. "That was a much-needed class I took," she says. "It was a reality check, really." Ms. Wilson is one of thousands of low-income Chicago-area residentssome with jobs, some on welfarein need of rudimentary financial education. With the first cutoffs looming next year on federal cash assistance to the poor under the landmark 1995 welfare reform law, non-profits and financial firms are getting serious about teaching welfare
recipients the basics of budgeting, banking and saving.

Now she was a frail woman, I must have picked her up, and I walked up on the bus, and I figured that's the end of me, too. But, and there was no seat, so I had to put her in the aisle, and I covered her up. And they looked around to find a seat for me, and there was no seat. CRIME PREVENTION A Message from Allegheny County Sheriff PETE DEFAZIO “The Allegheny County Sheriff's Office is deeply committed to serving the residents of Allegheny County in as many ways as possible with the limited personnel of the department. It is our continued intention to provide the best possible service at the lowest possible cost without sacrificing the quality of such services. “As the Chief Law Enforcement Officer in Allegheny County, I believe I have a responsibility to take a pro-active approach to fighting crime, and there is no question in my mind that our efforts in Crime Prevention and Community-Oriented Policing are extremely effective in educating our citizens in ways to prevent crime, and avoid being victims of crimes.
"The Allegheny County Sheriff's Office participation in Community Relations, Crime Prevention and Community-Oriented Police Services is quite extensive. Our programs provide many beneficial services to a large segment of County residents of various age groups on a broad range of law enforcement and safety topics. Most importantly, perhaps, is our emphasis on citizen involvement in the fight against crime.
“We in the Allegheny County Sheriff’s Office will do everything we can to fight crime and protect our citizens. And what’s more, in Allegheny County, we have perhaps the best system of local, municipal law enforcement in the whole country. I am not aware of any community in the United States where local law enforcement is so community-oriented and pro-active as our borough, township and city police officers in Allegheny County. But short of putting a police officer on every corner of every street in this county, law enforcement officers cannot do the job alone. We need and want active citizen participation in our Crime Prevention efforts. Together, we can help ensure that this remains one of the safest communities in America.”

LAWS AGAINST CONSENSUAL ACTIVITIES TEACH IRRESPONSIBILITY
If you want a Big Brother, you get all that comes with it. ERICH FROMM
    Escape from Freedom
IRRESPONSIBILITY IS AS old as mankind—literally. When God asked Adam, "Have you eaten from the tree that I commanded you not to eat from?" Adam answered, "The woman you put here with me—she gave me some fruit from the tree, and I ate it." Note the dual layer of irresponsibility: Adam blames not only Eve, he also blames God for putting her with him. Irresponsibility is as old as womankind, too. After God heard Adam's rational lies, he turned to Eve and asked, "What is this you have done?" And Eve responded, "The serpent deceived me, and I ate." (Modern translation: "The devil made me do it!") It seems that the buck never stops in Eden. It's amazing that the serpent didn't blame its upbringing, claim it was high on drugs, or simply plead insanity. At the very least, the serpent could have argued that it was only following its religious beliefs. But responsible or not, God punished them all, and so here we all are today. Did you ever notice how disarming it is when people take responsibility and how irritating it is when they blame? If people spent half as much mental energy finding a way to keep an unfortunate occurrence from happening again as they spend on finding reasons why (a) what happened wasn't so bad, or (b) "It wasn't my fault," the world would be a lot better off.
