A panel of experts led by Nobel laureate and University of Chicago Graduate School of Business Professor Robert Fogel will discuss the state of business ethics in the United States after Enron from 9:30 a.m. to 12:30 p.m. Saturday, June 1 at the Gleacher Center, 450 N. Cityfront Plaza Drive. The panelists will address the broad issue of business ethics in the nation today from a variety of angles. For example, what does the Enron case reveal as problematic in the way U.S. firms conduct themselves? Is Enron an isolated case or does it suggest a more pervasive malaise in corporate behavior? What private or legislative steps are being taken to protect employees and stockholders from the manipulations of senior corporation officers? Also, what is the situation of the business whistleblower, and should more protections for such people be put into law? Are business schools stressing ethics sufficiently in their curriculum? What pressures to stockholders implicitly apply to corporate officers that may result in a lapse in business ethics? How do U.S. firms competing abroad deal with societies where the standard business practice runs afoul of U.S. laws regarding payoffs and bribery? Following their discussion, panelists will take questions from the audience. Admission to the June 1 event is $18 for those who preregister, or $25 at the door. A continental breakfast will be provided. Students pay $10 with a valid identification card from an accredited university. Preregistration fees may be mailed to the Graham School of General Studies, 5835 S. Kimbark Ave., Chicago, IL, 60637, or fax a credit card number to (773) 702-6814. For more information, call (773) 702-1682.

Business conduct guidelines At IBM, we believe that our customers deserve quality products, delivered by trusted Business Partners that stand behind their delivery and fulfillment. We believe that it is a privilege to carry the IBM Business Partner emblem as a part of your participation as an IBM Business Partner, and our Business Partner Charter expresses our vision of the importance we place on Business Partners as a key route to market.
Ethical behavior requires more than compliance with agreements and the law, which are of course the minimum measures of our contractual relationship. It means meeting customer expectations, and those of IBM, in carrying out the many tasks which IBM Business Partners perform. It means setting reasonable commitments, and not misrepresenting the capability of IBM products or your own solutions. It also requires fair and legal competition in all aspects of your business, and in particular, a focus on sensitive areas such as the public sector, government bids and the like. Your IBM Business Partner Agreement is specific on the point of improperly "influencing" business in IBM's favor, and we view adherence to these responsibilities as among the most important aspects of our relationship.
We encourage our Business Partners to adopt guidelines within their own organizations to assist employees in conducting business ethically. IBM teams use the business conduct guidelines in this section as a basis for making decisions and agreements with vendors, competitors, suppliers and in diverse marketing contexts. These guidelines do not replace quality management judgement on a transaction, but set a framework for helping us meet our customers' expectations, and serve as a model of good corporate citizenship.

    Business Ethics in Corporate America
Speech Delivered by Steven J. Cole I’d like to start off with a short passage from a moving book I read almost 10 years ago. It is called “Rivethead,” written by Ben Hamper. The book is about one man's view of life on a General Motors assembly line. “One night Jack arrived to send me on a break. Before doing so, he raced around the corner to buy a pack of smokes. A moment later, he reappeared screechin' his lungs out. Apparently, the cigarette machine had eaten his money. An unfortunate break? Not the way Jack saw it. The war was on. “Jack reached into my workbench and grabbed my sledgehammer… Moments after Jack charged off …I heard the sound of glass being shattered. The pounding continued. He was obviously destroying the vending machine. Jack bashed away at he machine as if he were poundin' the very breath out of Roger Smith himself. "Finally, Jack returned. He had about two dozen packs of cigarettes bunched to his chest. Blood trickled from his forearms. His smile was one demented line stretching from ear to ear. The war had been won.
