Buffalo Soldiers
African-American troops have served in every major military conflict in American history. But it was during the Civil War that Black males were enlisted for widescale battle by the Union Army. Even though prejudice prevented them from being fully accepted, the soldiers fought bravely and over 33 thousand of the nearly 180 thousand men that enlisted lost their lives. These black soldiers composed 20 percent of the Army in the 1870s.

Colonel Charles "Chuck" Long of the The American Buffalo Soldiers Re-Enactors' Association leads the charge for Buffalo Soldiers Re-enactors Association Black troops who helped conquer the West supposedly were called "Buffalo Soldiers" because Native Americans thought their bushy hair resembled the coat of the bison. While often treated as footnotes to history, in fact, there were more black soldiers on the frontier than most people realize, and their contribution was major. Their faces simply do not show up in Western movies - or even most historic photographs.

Chief Victorio a.k.a. Apache Wolf. National Archives Background Event: Chief Victorio also known as Apache Wolf, is considered one of the fiercest of the Apache. He and his Warm Springs Apaches left the hated San Carlos Reservation. He had done this twice before, but had returned. When moved to Fort Stanton, New Mexico he fled again, but this time he said, he would never return. Victorio reasoned that the arrival of the new judge and district attorney meant he would be tried for old murders and horse stealing. He and others also left, because government would not give them their promised food allotments, so they and their families were starving. Before Victorio's breakout, the heroic Ninth U.S. Cavalry had been given the distasteful task of returning Apaches who left their reservation. They also had to protect the Apaches on and off the reservation from cowboys and others who often hunted and killed Indians for sport. Some whites made a living by selling Indian scalps to the Mexican government who paid $50 for a male, $25 for a female and $10 for a child's scalp. At one time, the Apaches had been allowed to hunt under the protection of the military, but the settlers didn't like seeing armed Indians so the practice was discontinued. Colonel Hatch of the Ninth U.S. Cavalry, complained to General Sheridan that the Apaches were going to starve if they couldn't leave the reservation to hunt. Sheridan was not impressed with Hatch's letter.

THE BUFFALO SOLDIERS
Black soldiers fought in Washington's army during the War of Independence, and served with Andrew Jackson at New Orleans in 1815. Late in 1861, Colonel T. W. Higginson took command of the First Regiment of South Carolina Volunteers, the first Black regiment in the service of the United States. On June 28, 1866, an Act of Congress authorized the creation of two cavalry and four infantry regiments, "which shall be composed of colored men." They were organized as the 9th and 10th Cavalry and the 38th through 41st Infantry. The 9th and 10th Cavalry would go on to play a major role in the history of the West, as the "Buffalo Soldiers." On September 21, 1866, the 9th Cavalry Regiment was activated at Greenville, Louisiana under command of Colonel Edward Hatch and the 10th Cavalry Regiment at Fort Leavenworth, Kansas under command of Colonel Benjamin Grierson. The term "buffalo soldiers" came from Cheyenne warriors who first encountered these black men in blue uniforms, whose dark skin and thick hair resembled the buffalo. The initial strangeness turned to respect buffalo soldiers participated in most of the campaigns against hostile tribes, earning themselves battle honors and no less than 18 Medals of Honor for individual heroism. The Buffalo Soldiers consistently received some of the worst assignments the Army had to offer. They also faced fierce prejudice to both the colors of their Union uniforms and their skin by many of the citizens of the post-war frontier towns. Despite this, the troopers of the 9th and 10th Cavalries developed into two of the most distinguished fighting units in the Army.

The primary assignment of the buffalo soldiers was the suppression of Native Americantribes who interfered with the settlement of the Americans on the frontier
    http://www.ruraltel.net/gced/tnthistory.htm
Who were they? After the Civil War, Congress passed a bill to establish a peacetime military. Provisions in this bill created six regiments of colored troops—four infantry (foot soldiers) and two cavalry (on horseback)—of about 1,000 men each. The troops were placed under the command of Colonels Benjamin Grierson and Edward Hatch. African Americans from the North and South, many of them freed slaves, enlisted in what were organized as the 9th and 10th Cavalries. The Buffalo Soldiers served at Wounded Knee and with Teddy Roosevelt in Cuba, battled Crazy Horse, helped capture Geronimo and Billy the Kid and strung telegraph lines across the West.
    The Name
Although there are several theories, the Calvaries actually got their name from their enemies, the American Indians, who admired the colored troopers' fearlessness and courage (qualities also found in the buffalo). The Native Americans also believed that the Soldiers' hair resembled the tuft between the horns of the bison. Thus, the name Buffalo Soldiers stuck, and the Soldiers wore it with pride.
    Their Mission
The primary assignment of the Buffalo Soldiers was the suppression of Native American tribes who interfered with the settlement of the Americans on the frontier. Like white units, they were called into service to "carry out U.S. Government public policy of Westward expansion," as well as escort tribes to designated reservations. The Soldiers built and defended the telegraph lines, built and repaired forts and helped establish the foundation of future towns. They were also involved in the settling of disputes between railroads and unions as well as those between the white settlers. In the Westward expansion, the Buffalo Soldiers mapped the vast territories in New Mexico and Arizona, marking the water holes.
