You are in: Front Page Sitemap Religions of the World Buddhism Buddhism - Introduction Buddhism is a vast and complex religious and philosophical tradition which stretches back over 2,500 years.
Over the last 30 years Buddhism has seen growth in the West as its non-dogmatic nature, rationality, possibility of a spiritual guide, and opportunity for personal transformation have all made it attractive to post-modern society.
It has about 500 million adherents around the world-45,000 active Buddhists in UK 'Buddha' means 'one who has woken up'. Most people live asleep, never knowing or seeing life as it really is. As a consequence they suffer. A buddha is someone who awakens to the knowledge of the world as it truly is and so finds release from suffering.

For centuries, Buddhism has been the dominant religion of the Eastern world. Today it remains the predominant religion in China, Japan, Korea, and much of southeast Asia. With the rise of the Asian population in the U.S., Buddhism has made a tremendous impact in the United States. Presently, there are over 300,000 Buddhists in the U.S. It remains the dominant religion in the state of Hawaii and many prominent Americans have accepted this religion, including the former governor of California, Jerry Brown.(1)
The Origin of Buddhism
Buddhism began as an offspring of Hinduism in the country of India. The founder was Siddhartha Gautama. It is not easy to give an accurate historical account of the life of Gautama, since no biography was recorded until hundreds of years after his death. Today, much of his life story is clouded in myths and legends which arose after his death. Even the best historians of our day have several differentand even contradictoryaccounts of Gautama's life. Siddhartha Gautama was born in approximately 560 B.C. in northern India. His father Suddhodana was the ruler over a district near the Himalayas which is today the country of Nepal. Suddhodana sheltered his son from the outside world and confined him to the palace where he surrounded Gautama with pleasures and wealth. Despite his father's efforts, Gautama one day saw the darker side of life on a trip he took outside the palace walls.

What do you think, my friend?
(Writings on Buddhism) Welcome to "What do you think, my friend?" . This site contains a selection of writings on Buddhism. This site takes a highly personal and practical approach towards Buddhism. Here, there are no deep philosophical discussions on Anatta or Sunnata. Just ordinary people like myself sharing insights and experiences on how Buddhism had benefitted us, and exchanging some nice stories and a few good jokes about Buddhism. This is why I named my website "What do you think, my friend?". In this little corner of cyberspace, there is no Great Master. There is no, "Please enlighten me, Venerable Sir". There is only a funny guy living his life and sharing it. There is only, "What do you think, my friend?". Thanks for coming to visit. I hope you will find the information here useful. Give me a mail some time. I would appreciate the opportunity to learn from you. My e-mail address is cmtan@serve.com Launched in May 1995, this site is one of the oldest Buddhist sites on the web.

68. Buddhism In Thailand
buddhism in Thailand. buddhism, the great eastern religion cherished senseof inner freedom. Fundamentally, buddhism is an empirical way of life.
http://www.mahidol.ac.th/Thailand/religion/r_buddhi.html
Buddhism in Thailand
B uddhism , the great eastern religion founded by the Indian Prince Siddhartha Gautama 600 years before the birth of Christ, first appeared in Thailand during the 3rd century B.C. in the area of the present day provincial capital Nakhon Pathom. Once established, it proved such a durable and pervasive force that some ethnic groups who migrated into that area during the Dvaravati period readily adopted it as their state religion. At its inception, Buddhism had been a reaction against Brahmanism, eschewing Brahmanism's emphasis on caste and dogma regarding sacrifice and ritual. At the same time, it modified Brahmanic concepts of karma and rebirth. Sukhothai 's King Ramkhamhaeng [1275-1317 A.D.] established Theravada Buddhism as Thailand's dominant religion. It reached its height under the reign of King Ramkhamhaeng's grandson, King Li Thai [1347-1368 A.D.], when about 30 volumes of the Buddhist scriptures were studied and rewritten by the king into one volume, the Tribhumikatha, a treatise on Buddhist cosmology and the three planes of existence-Sensuous, Corporeal, and Incorporeal. Not only was this the first Buddhist treatise by a Thai, but it was also the first known Thai Buddhist and didactic literary work. The Tribhumikatha's impact on religious arts such as mural paintings can be seen today in many monasteries in various provinces. Through the centuries Buddhism has been the main driving force in Thai cultural development. Much of classical Thai art, particularly architecture, sculpture, painting, and early literature is really Buddhist art. Then, as now, Buddhism coloured everyday Thai life.

69. BUDDHISM
Excellent introduction to buddhism provided by Mahidol University, Thailand.Category Society Religion and Spirituality buddhism What Is buddhism...... precepts. In recent years Western visitors to Thailand have displayedan increasing interest in our national religion, buddhism.
http://www.mahidol.ac.th/budsir/buddhism.htm
We pay homage to the Buddha for revealing to us the eternal truths of liberation We pay homage to the Dhamma (the teaching of the Buddha) for making known to us the nature of existence We pay homage to the Sangha (the order of monks) for preserving the teaching and practicing its precepts.
In recent years Western visitors to Thailand have displayed an increasing interest in our national religion, Buddhism. “Who was the Buddha?” “What did he teach?” “What do Buddhists believe about life after death, good and evil and the beginning of the world?” To answer these and similar questions the present writing is intended.
The Buddha’s teachings can be understood on two distinct levels. One is logical and conceptual and is concerned with an intellectual comprehension of man and the external universe. It is on this level that the above questions are more easily answered. The second level is empirical, experiential and psychological. It concerns the ever-present and inescapable phenomena of everyday human experience love and hate, fear and sorrow, pride and passion, frustration and elation. And most important, it explains the origins of such states of mind and prescribes the means for cultivating those states which are rewarding and wholesome and of diminishing those which are unsatisfactory and unwholesome. It was to this second level that the Buddha gave greater emphasis and importance. For its truth is demonstrable within the realm of everyday human existence, and its validity is independent of any world view or belief about life after death.

BUDDHISM
- A transcript from The Hour of Judgment radio series -
Guests:
  • Do-Kwang Su nim - Zen monk
  • Mervin Thomas - Buddhist practitioner
Hosts: The Hour of Judgment D.Q David : Hello everyone. Welcome to The Hour of Judgment . My name is David Quinn and tonight's topic is Buddhism. Tonight's guests are two practitioners of Korean Zen Buddhism - their names are Do Kwang Su-Nim, who is actually an ordained monk, and Mervin Thomas, a senior practitioner and director of the Korean Zen group of Brisbane. Is that right? Do Kwang : The Dae Kwang Sa Zen Temple in Brisbane. David : Okay then. Over the next hour I'd like to come to grips with, or really get to the bottom of, what Buddhism is. What is the Buddhist path to enlightenment? And so I might open with that question, actually, to you, Do Kwang. What is Buddhism to you? What is the spiritual path? Do Kwang : Good evening. Well, quite simply, the Buddha's teaching was to understand the origins of suffering and how to overcome the worldly suffering. He recommended that we should be, within ourselves, meditative and aware moment by moment, and we should attempt to quieten the mind in order to allow our Buddha-Nature, our true nature, to come to the surface, so that we see things more clearly moment by moment. And in order to do that we have to put down opinions, ideas and so on, so that we can see things just as they are. David : Merv, does this resonate with you? Or do you have something to add to it?

What the Buddha Taught Awakening the Mind: Basic Buddhist Meditations The Art of Happiness
What is the sound of one hand clapping? If a tree falls in the forest, but no one is around, does it make a sound? And why are Buddhists so obsessed with the sound of stuff? Deep questions like these could be a part of your life, too, as you join an estimated 500 million other Buddhists around the world in the quest for spiritual enlightenment. Neophytes on the road to wisdom and weary old travelers alike will benefit from a review of the basics, so assume the lotus position , and read on, grasshopper. One of the nice things about Buddhism is that it generally doesn't take itself too seriously. Buddhists are a light-hearted , peace-loving group who haven't gone around burning astronomers, drowning weird old women, or drinking Kool-Aid (at least, not in the last 2000 years). Our point: understand that our use of humor in this SYW is not intended to insult anyone. If you are insulted, chug yourself a glass of Kool-Aid and get over it. There's a story told in Buddhist lore about a follower of another religion who went to the Buddha to try to convert him. The man was so impressed by the words of the Buddha that he decided to become a follower of the Buddha. Buddha said to him, "Make a proper investigation first." Notice that the Buddha did not proselytize aggressively, but suggested that people should take it or leave it according to their own personal assessment
