The British Virgin Islands (BVI) are a collection of 60 islands, cays and rocks in the northeastern Caribbean some 100 miles east of Puerto Rico. For most of the recorded history, since at least the 17th century, the BVI have been a crown colony of the United Kingdom. Having previously been part of the British colonial structure in the Caribbean for the first half of the 1900’s, the BVI refused to join the West Indian Federation and left the colony of the Leeward Islands on 1 July 1956. The islands of the BVI form almost an oval around Tortola, the largest island. Throughout our history, until the 1960’s, the BVI had been virtually subsistent in food production and produced enough for export to neighbouring United States of America Virgin Islands. This oval-shaped formation of the islands has turned out to be one of the best pleasure boating areas in the world. On land, the BVI is endowed with fine mountain ranges, small valleys and little flat fertile agriculture land. The geography of the BVI has been responsible for the natural assets used in the production of tourist services. For further information on the geography of the British Virgin Islands we have included an

OUR LAND Geography of the British Virgin Islands
The British Virgin Islands comprises of a group of thirty six (36) islands, islets and cays situated in the Eastern Caribbean (EC) at Longtitude 64o 30oW and Latitude 18o 30oN. The islands together constitute an area of 59 sq. Miles (153 sq km) and are washed by a territorial sea of 575 sq. Miles (1,489 sq. km). The area of sea is about 10 times that of the land area. AREAS OF THE MAIN LAND IN THE BVI ISLAND SQUARE MILES SQUARE KILOMETRES Tortola Anegada Virgin Gorda Jost Van Dyke Source: Development Planning Unit The territory experiences a sub-tropical climate with a diurnal temperature range of 77-85 degrees F (25-29 degrees C). As a result of its position in the North East Trade Winds (NETW) belt, temperature usually drops 10 degress F (6 degrees C) at night. The Trade Winds (TW) blow at a constant speed for most of the year except during the hurricane season from June to September when the territory is exposed to tropical storm force winds of up to 100 miles per hour (161 km per hour) or greater. Notable hurricanes and tropical storms that have struck the BVI were Tropical Storm Klaus in 1984, Hurricane Hugo in 1989 and Hurricanes Louis and Marilyn in 1995. Hurricanes Hugo, Louis and Marilyn were grouped as category 4 hurricanes clocking sustained winds of over 100 mph (161 km/hr). Hurricane Klaus in particular wreaked damage of over $150 m.

British Virgin Islands Overview of British Virgin Islands Photo Courtesy of Steve Filipiak No golf. No glitter. Not much shopping. The British Virgin Islands (B.V.I.) may be only a few miles away from the U.S. Virgin Islands, but don't expect the tourist bustle of St. Thomas. In addition to the spectacular sailing waters and coral reefs that surround them, the British Virgins have calm and tidy towns, luxurious accommodations and gourmet dining. For many, it's the perfect island getaway. But, as with most things perfect and luxurious, B.V.I. doesn't come cheap: The islands' emphasis on small, upscale resorts and their desire to appeal to well-heeled travelers results in a relatively pricey paradise with an exclusive atmosphere.

Welcome to Rob Swain Sailing School located on Tortola in the British Virgin Islands.
Rob Swain Sailing School is an Affiliated training facility, offering courses in Basic Keelboat (Learn to Sail) Bareboat Preparation Live Aboard Cruising Coastal Passage Making as well as customized courses in performance sailing and racing.
Location Tortola lies approximately ninety miles from Puerto Rico, and seven miles from St. Thomas USVI. The BVI offers the most consistently ideal sailing conditions. Trade winds blow on the norm from ten to twenty knots throughout most of the year. More important than wind speed is the wind direction. The wind blows almost constantly from the east down in the Virgin Islands. That makes for much easier learning - sailing out of our channel into the Sir Francis Drake Channel the wind will be blowing on your left ear as you look ahead. Repetition is the key to learning sailing, and the wind helps us here enormously. The Sir Francis Drake Channel is approx 9 miles long and 4 miles wide. Blocking the Atlantic Ocean is the island of Tortola, and shielding us from the Caribbean Sea swells are eleven other islands. This geography makes for the perfect training ground - a lively 2-3 foot chop and constant trade winds. It is very sunny here (about 85 degrees), but the winds keep it comfortable.
Your experience with Rob Swain Sailing School will be a great learning endeavor, and your trip to Tortola in the British Virgin Islands will be unforgettable! Contact us for more information regarding sailing lessons and courses.
