24. PEH-Bridge Disaster
Short description of the collapse of wooden bridge on Vancouver Island, british columbia, 1896, under weight of tramway car.
http://www.tbc.gov.bc.ca/culture/schoolnet/victoriana/tour/gartour/bridge.htm
The present steel bridge stands at the site of the notorious Pt.Ellice Bridge Disaster. During the celebration of Queen Victoria's birthday in 1896, the former wooden bridge collapsed under the weight of an overloaded streetcar on its way to festivities in Esquimalt. The car plunged into the water below. Pleasure-boaters who had been enjoying a regatta nearby sprang into action, pulling those they could onto the lawns of the fashionable homes. Fifty-five of the 140 people on board died, crushed by falling timber or trapped inside the car. It was the worst accident of any kind in Victoria, and the worst streetcar disaster in the history of North America.

westernmost province and one of North America's most mountainous regions. B.C. is bordered by the province of Alberta, the Yukon Territory and several U.S. states, including Alaska. Given its location, British Columbia is a gateway to the Pacific and Asia. Sometimes simply categorized as part of Canada's "West," the province is actually a distinct region both geographically and culturally.
offer remarkable topographical contrasts. Where the Pacific Ocean reaches the continent, it meets a chain of islands, large and small, running from north to south. Some of these islands are nestled in fiords carved in the majestic Coastal Mountains, which rise more than 2000 m above sea level.
To the east of the Coastal Mountains lies a rolling upland of forests, natural grasslands and lakes. Farther east, the Rocky Mountains (with peaks more than 4000 m high) separate B.C. from neighbouring Alberta. In the north, a small corner of the province is occupied by the Great Plains.
    The History
The Aboriginal peoples of British Columbia developed a rich and complex culture. Because of the diversity of the Pacific coast - mild to cold climate, seashore to mountains - the tribes that settled in this area developed completely different cultures and languages.

    THE FRASER VALLEY
    British Columbia - CANADA
The Fraser Valley is one of several distinct regions that make up what is considered to be the Lower Mainland of British Columbia. "The Valley", as it is referred to in these parts is that area extending from the community of Hope at its eastern end to the community of Langley in the west. It takes the shape of a triangle placed on its side. The point is Hope and the base is Langley/Pitt Meadows. Even though technically the area west of Langley all the way to the Strait of Georgia could be considered a continuation of the valley this area is referred to as Greater Vancouver. Another distinction made by this site is that north of Hope the Fraser River runs through what is known as the Fraser Canyon which will eventually provide content for another site dealing with aspects of the "interior".
Making extensive use of photographs this website attempts to provide anyone with an interest in Fraser Valley some understanding of the many aspects of this region. There are 9 cities/districts, a great variety of economic activity, many attractions, a mix of native and newly arrived cultures, a lively history as well as a stimulating geography, geology and biology to be dealt with. In addition, other sources available on the web will be identified to provide additional information on these subjects.
    The Langleys
    Fort Langley Pitt Meadows
    Maple Ridge

We recommend the following site for having content well suited for the understanding and enjoyment of the Fraser Valley. The MAP LINKS are especially useful to those wishing to travel in the Valley.
