Tesco has asked fruit producers to use less chemicals
Tesco has admitted that a drive to use less pesticides in its food could mean more spiders turning up in bags of fruit. But the supermarket denied that food producers are using black widow spiders, after three customers found them in bags of grapes. In separate incidents, the three women discovered the deadly spider among American-grown grapes bought from Tesco stores. Two of the spiders were alive. The company says producers do use natural predators to protect fruit, as an alternative to chemicals. The black widow spider has a distinctive red marking
But it strongly denies that the distinctive spider, whose venom is 15 times more potent than a rattlesnake, is deliberately used on suppliers' crops in the US. Spokesman Jonathan Church said the use of natural predators, including harmless spiders, and less pesticides could have allowed the more lethal spiders into the fruit.

Black Widow Spider
The black widow spider, Lactrodectus mactans , is probably the most widely recognized of the dangerously poisonous spiders found in North Carolina. Most people are familiar with the large, shiny black body and red "hourglass" markings on the underside of the abdomen (see picture), but it is important to note that the coloration and markings are only found on adult females. Young black widow spiders are tan-to-gray in color and have orange and white "racing stripes" on their abdomens. These marks may remain visible on adults. The female has a body length of about ", with a total length (including legs) of about 1 ". The male spider is smaller than the female and, like young spiders, has red and white markings on the back of its abdomen.

Black widow spiders are found in protected places, such as under rocks, wooden boards and in dense plant growth. They frequently nest in electrical, water and telephone equipment boxes outdoors. Around homes, these spiders may be found in crawlspaces, beneath appliances, usually in corners that are dark and damp. The female produces an egg sac containing 250-750 eggs that hatch in two to four weeks, depending upon temperature. The spiders spin a web that is used to ensnare prey, mostly insects, but sometimes other spiders as well. The trapped victim is bitten, then injected with venom to paralyze it.

UNIVERSITY OF ARKANSAS ARTHROPOD MUSEUM NOTES Southern and northern black widow spiders Order: Araneae
Family: Theridiidae
Genus and species: Latrodectus mactans (F) and L. variolus Walckenaer
Latrodectus mactans , is probably the most common species in this state. The posterior portion of the red hourglass on the underside of the abdomen may appear more like a rounded rectangle than a triangle, and there is usually a row of red spots on top of the abdomen. The northern black widow, L. variolus , is more common in the northern states. The anterior and posterior portions of the ventral hourglass are not joined at the middle. Black widows spin webs of coarse silk, usually near the ground in dark places, and usually outdoors. They do not leave their webs voluntarily and are clumsy and completely out of their element away from them. Piles of rubble, sheds, garages, crawl spaces, cellars, and basements may harbor these spiders. Although the nocturnal black widows are not aggressive, females will bite when provoked sufficiently. Males, which are rarely seen, do not bite, and they are much smaller, narrower, and generally more brightly colored than females. The insertion of the female's fangs produces a pinprick sensation, followed by a burning sensation for a few minutes. Pain usually progresses up or down the arm or leg, finally localizing more or less in the abdomen and back. The abdominal muscles become rigid and board-like with severe cramps. Other symptoms may be nausea, depression, insomnia, tremors, a speech defect and a slight rise in body temperature. The general symptoms may appear after a few hours or may be observed within a few minutes of the bite. Muscular spasms and cramps of the arms, legs, back and abdomen may be quite painful at the height of the reaction. Fatalities are rare, and the robust usually recover quickly and completely.

The black widow, Latrodectus mactans, is one of two poisonous spiders found in Missouri.
Black widow
The black widow has a jet-black body, a red hourglass mark on its abdomen and long legs. Male black widow spiders are smaller than females and have yellow and red bands and spots on their backs. Only mature females of the species are poisonous. The females usually eat the males after mating. Use caution while cleaning garages, sheds or piles of lumber or debris this spring. Black widow spiders are not aggressive, but they spin tangled webs of coarse silk near the ground in littered areas. If they are disturbed or pinned, they will bite. Their bite is more toxic than a rattlesnake bite, though so little venom is injected into the victim few people die as a result. The first step in spider control is sanitation. Keep undisturbed areas of a structure free of clutter. Periodically move stored materials and vacuum the area. Chemical control is more effective when coupled with good sanitation. Household sprays may be applied in the basement, attic, storage area, behind furniture and in other nooks and crannies. Outside areas to treat include around doors and windows, under the roof eaves, under porches, and crawl spaces if they are accessible. Because of constant reinfestation from out-of-doors, chemical control will not guarantee freedom from spiders.

Black Widow ( Latrodectus variolus The version found in Michigan is called the northern black widow spider. These spiders are not nearly as large as many people think. The body of the female spider is about ½-inch long (1½-inch long including the legs). Males are smaller. Black widow spiders are black, shiny and have a very round abdomen. Females have a red spot (often shaped like an hourglass) on the underside of its abdomen. The male lacks the red hourglass marking but may have yellow and red bands and spots over the back. Black widow spiders are common around woodpiles and are frequently encountered when homeowners carry firewood into the house. They may also be found under eaves, in boxes, outdoor toilets, meter boxes and other undisturbed places. While they may bite when touched or harmed, they are not aggressive. Be very careful when working around areas where black widow spiders may live. Wear gloves and pay attention to where you are working. Black widow bites are sharp and painful, and the victim should go to the doctor immediately for treatment. To control the black widow, carefully remove all materials where they might hide. They can be cleaned out of an area simply by knocking down the webs, spiders, and round tan egg sacs with a stick and crushing them underfoot.

BLACK WIDOW BITES
As the weather outside turns colder, critters will begin seeking warmer shelter in local houses, barns, basements, sheds and woodpiles. A most unwelcome guest that appears during this yearly indoor migration is the black widow spider. The poisonous black widow is common throughout Colorado. Reports indicate that bites result in death for only one percent or less of the cases, usually occurring in very young or very old individuals.
With healthy people, recovery is usually complete in 2 to 5 days. However, this spider is considered the most venomous spider in North America. It is not aggressive, and fatalities from its bite are uncommon. However bites can cause serious illness, so precautions are especially in order at this time of year. The female black widow is poisonous and the male is not. The female is about 1.5 inches long, jet black in color and usually has a red hourglass marking on the underside of the abdomen. The male is smaller with brown markings. This spider is found in undergrowth, under stones, in garages, window wells, crawl spaces and basements. Homes in new developments will be bothered for some time from natural populations in the area. Black widows spin tangled webs of coarse silk in dark places, usually outdoors. Webs are usually built near the ground (occasionally within dwellings). The female lays eggs in silken cocoons or sacs that are globular in shape and about 1/2 inch in diameter. Sacs are white at first, later turning pale brown. About 300 to 400 eggs per sac are common with 4 to 9 egg sacs produced during a summer. Normally, only 1 to 12 young survive after the egg incubation period of 14 to 30 days due to cannibalism.

Recommended Products are linked under control below Black Widow Spiders Order/Family: Areneae/Theridiidae Scientific Name: Latrodectus spp. Description: The body of the female black widow spider is about 1/2-inch long, glossy black with a nearly globe-like abdomen. The abdomen has two triangular red spots on its underside arranged in such a way that the spots look like an hourglass. Males are much smaller than the females, 1/4-inch long with a longer, narrower abdomen and somewhat longer legs. Spiderlings are mostly orange and white but become increasingly more black as they mature. Biology: Black widow spiders lay their eggs in silken sacs which they protect in their nests. A female produces from six to 21 sacs during her lifetime, each containing 185 to 464 eggs. The young spiderlings remain in the case until the second molt. They live in the vicinity of the nest for two to three weeks before producing long threads of silk that help them float away, much as kites float. Female spiderlings undergo from four to nine molts before maturing; this process requires from 54 to 107 days. Development time (i.e., from egg to adult) is approximately one year. Females live up to three years and males approximately 180 days. Habits: Black widows are shy, preferring to build their webs in dry, protected locations where their prey is likely to travel. Outdoors they can be found among rocks and wood piles, under decks, in hollow stumps, rodent burrows, beneath benches, etc. They prefer basements, crawl spaces, and garages in structures as well as other protected areas such as barns, sheds, meter boxes, brick veneer, pump houses, etc. The webs, which are irregular in shape and approximately one foot in diameter, are used to trap their insect prey which is then paralyzed by their venom. Females often eat the males after mating, thus, giving them their rather morbid name. Females produce a neurotoxin and bite if disturbed or handled roughly. Each year several deaths are attributed to the bite of black widow spiders as a result of anaphylactic reactions, however, in most cases, the bite is no worse than a wasp sting.

Wild Things - Bite of the Black Widow
There are about six species of black widow spiders and all of them are poisonous. The female is more deadly than the male. She has a shiny, black body with a reddish hourglass shape on the underside of her belly. Her body is usually about two and a half centimeters long, including her legs. The male is around half her size and sometimes has a pair of reddish stripes on the side of his body. Where to Find Them
Black widows are found throughout most of the Western Hemisphere - Europe and North America. They can be seen almost anywhere from deserts to trash cans to attics. Generally, they spin their home in warm, dark places. The Attack
Nobody in the US has died from a black widow bite in 10 years, but it can still be painful if the female does attack. The more timid male does not bite humans - it's the female that's more aggressive. The only time someone might die from a bite is if no medical attention is available. The bite itself looks almost like a bullseye, with a lighter area surrounded by a red circle.

Spiders may have a place in the great scheme of things - helping keep the insect population down and so forth - but people don't want that place to be in their own homes. Spiders' reputation as scary beasts is far bigger than their real role in ecology. In the Texas Cooperative Extension publication, "Spiders," (L?1787), J. A. Jackman, Extension entomologist, wrote: "Their beneficial role in keeping insect populations in check far outweighs the hazard posed by the few spiders that occasionally bite humans. Very few of the nearly 900 species of spiders in Texas can hurt people." However, it's those "very few" spiders that can harm humans that cause all the confusion and panic. Although Jackman reassured consumers that tarantulas, jumping spiders and wolf spiders, among others, aren't particularly dangerous to people, he warns that recluse spiders and black widow spiders are.

The Black Widow Spider The female black widow spider is one of the most recognizable spiders in Maryland. Its characteristic red hourglass on its glossy black abdomen makes identification easy. The female reaches a body length of approximately 13mm (.5in) long, and a total length of 1-1.5in. Males are considerably smaller, are rarely seen, and have four pairs of red marks along the sides of the abdomen. Young black widow spiders are tan-gray in color, and have orange and white stripes on their abdomens. Black widows can be found in protected areas, such as under rock, wood and dense plant growth. Around the home, black widow spiders can be found in crawlspaces, beneath appliances, equipment boxes, and in corners that are dark and damp. The female lays approximately 250 eggs in an egg sac, which is about .5-5/8” in diameter. The eggs hatch in 20 days and remain in the sac from 4 days to 1 month. The spiderlings then molt and begin to feed.

Cases of Mistaken Identity
People often think they have been bitten by a spider when the culprit is actually a flea, tick, mite, or even a disease condition. Very few spiders are equipped with mouth parts that can pierce human skin. If the bites you are discovering are small, mild, and disappear within a day or two, there is probably nothing to be concerned about. Of course, if a bite affects a large area, is very painful, and/or is followed by dizziness, fever, nausea, or any other severe symptoms, seek medical advice immediately. Try to capture the offending spider, drop it into a small jar of rubbing alcohol, and save it for identification.

Enjoy! Black Widow, Latrodectus mactans , is a species that can be found chiefly in the Tropics but also common in the southern United States and found as far north as Canada. The Black Widow spider is probably the best-known and most feared of all North American spiders. The female is easily recognized. She is about 1.2 cm (about 0.5 in) long, with a leg span of up to 5cms (2 ins) and is jet black, with an hourglass-shaped red patch below her almost spherical abdomen. In spite of her size, she has a powerful venomous bite and may cause a wide range of symptoms in humans, including pain, swelling, nausea, faintness, difficulty in breathing and sometimes death. Despite it's reputation, however, Black Widow spiders are passive and bite humans only defensively. The male is smaller, about one-third of the size of the female and can be up to *30 times* lighter than her! The male Black Widow's abdomen is more elongated than that of the female, with white and red markings on its sides, and is harmless to humans.

In nature, and especially at Kaweah Oaks Preserve, never put your hand into a squirrel, rabbit or other dark hole in the ground or tree. This is the most likely habitat for hungry Black Widow Spiders. Their bite is painful and is the most toxic of all spiders in the Central Valley. Its poison can cause flu-like symptoms and, in severe cases, liver damage - especially in young children or the elderly.
Luckily, they are very sensitive to insecticides and, therefore, easy to control. Immature Black Widow
Immature Black Widows have the same shape as the mature "Widow" but with dramatic color markings. An immature Widow, although much smaller that an adult, can still cause a painful and dangerous bite. As you can see, the characteristic hourglass marking is yellowish, not red, in this young female spider. After mating, the female spider takes on the sinister black with red hourglass coloration. The Male Black Widow Spider
This male specimen was found on the outside of a neighbor's home
