The site also includes information for elementary, middle and high school students who wish to enter the Black History Month Essay Contest sponsored by the State Department of Education. State Superintendent of Education Inez Tenenbaum urged South Carolina teachers to make use of the web site in their classrooms. "It offers some very creative ways to teach students about the contributions of African-Americans to every aspect of our lives," Tenenbaum said. The theme for Black History Month 2001, observed during February, is "Creating and defining the African-American community: family, church, politics and culture." The "it" I am referring to is the apparent boredom of many of today's Black youth with the history of our own people. Corrections Black History Month comes to a close by Tiffany Arnold The Daily Illini Related news and links Printer-friendly version Central Black Student Union, Buddy Core and the African American Cultural Program "recreated the vision" this year for Black History Month at closing ceremonies. The two-hour event took place in the Union Ballroom at 7 p.m. The ceremony provided a soul food buffet for participants and included song, dance, poetry and a performance by a Haitian band, TCHAKA. Some of the activities at the closing ceremonies included Teach-ins, Lunch and Learns and other social events such as Cotton Club. Although this event marked the end of a long string of events, Ivy Hall, traditional programming chair for CBSU and Buddy Core co-chair, warned students not to limit the study of Black History to just one month. "It's just the end of a month, not a culture," Hall said.
