A Advisors and Research Rotations for New Students
Research Rotation Request form to the BMBGC identifying the proposed mentor and an alternate for the first laboratory rotation. Assignment of rotations is made by the Departmental Chairman on the recommendation by the BMBGC. Following approval by the BMBGC and Departmental Chairman, each student will enroll in the approved faculty member's section of BIOC 6330 Introduction to Research for 3 credit hours per rotation and will spend a minimum of 12 hours per week in the laboratory for a semester. At the completion of each research rotation, student and advisor will complete the appropriate sections of the "Research Rotation Evaluation" form (see Appendix) which will become a part of the student's departmental file. Students may also be required to make a brief oral presentation on the work accomplished in their rotations. During the latter half of the first rotation, students will identify two proposed research rotations for the two summer sessions. Students will be expected to spend full time on research during the summer rotations. With the approval of the BMBGC, students may take a fourth research rotation in the spring semester if a dissertation mentor has not yet been chosen. BIOL 5900,5901 (Biotechniques and Laboratory) or BIOL 6250, 6251 (Protein Purification Techniques) may be substituted for the first rotation)

Biology Majors at Beloit College
Biology majors can choose between 6 options and Biochemistry. These major options prepare the student for future study or employment in different areas.
Cell and Molecular Biology
It's all small stuff: focuses on the cellular and molecular levels of organization within biological systems. Requires additional math and physics, and Bio 248.
Ecology, Evolution, and Behavioral Biology
The big picture: emphasises the function, evolution, causation, and development of animal behavior. Electives in anthro.
Biology w/ Education certification
Provides a broad background in general biology and prepares students to earn a teaching certificate in biology. Certification courses in Education must be completed.
Environmental Biology
Focuses on intereactions between organisms and their environments with courses in Environmental Biology, Ecology and Population Biology. Includes electives in Geology. Students are encouraged to take summer courses at the ACM Wilderness Field Station in the Boundary Waters of Minnesota.
Integrative and Medical Biology
Examines the underlying principles of biology that span levels of organization from molecules to whole organisms. This major includes additional Physics, Math and Chemistry, including all prerequisites for medical school.

Patron (varies)
Strong Will +4, 20 points RACIAL DISADVANTAGES:
Duty (varies)
Sense of Duty to Master (-15 points)
Unusual Biochemistry (-5 points)
Homonculous are creatures created and given artificial life by alchenical means. An homonculous mat have almost any form the hideous to the sublime, according to the designs of its creator. Most are capable of independent thought and action, subject, in most cases, to the commands of its master.
Player Character Homonculous:
The homonculous are a "race" of creatures that allow the player great freedom to design any type of individual creature he wants to play (See the "Gargoyles, Mutated" for an example), subject to GM approval of course. For PC homonculi, it can be assumed that the PC has a Patron and a Duty both to "Master" (whos commands must be obeyed), generally the Patron and Duty should be of the same point cost and the duty DOES COUNT towards the total number of individual disadvantages.
Homonculous have very flexible personalities, although they often take on some of the charactistics of their master or those they are around. Homonculous can be of any appearance or form and while some homonculous may not end up looking quite like their creator intended, even these "mistakes" often are able to cope and live.

Topic Area: Drugs

Question Posted By: Bodymechanic on Sunday, November 24, 2002
I am interested in your views concerning addiction as a disease. It is my understanding that SMART recovery rejects the disease model of addiction. Is it that you reject the concept or do you simple believe that concept is useless when it comes to a practical solution to the problem?
I see the heart of the issue as being what is and what is not a choice. I believe there are many things in life that we like to think are choices, which are in fact driven by biochemisty. The issue of choice is simply self deception.
I like to compare the choice of addiction to the choice of having children. Early on in my life I swore that I would never have children and I meant it. Well at the age of 48 yr, guess what is sitting next to me. A beautiful, bright eyed 13 mo old girl. I fought as long and hard as I could but in the end, the biochemisty was too strong for me. I had this child against my will in the same way that I find myself using drugs against my will. Of course now that I have her, I would not trade her for the world.
I believe that addicts don't choose to be addicts any more than homosexuals choose to be homosexuals or even a manic depressive choose to be manic depressive. There may be a choice in addictions but the degree is very unclear. I have read Jack Trimpey's book and he does make some good points. Still I do not understand how anyone could believe an addict would "choose" to lead this type of life. I wish it were that simple. If I speak only for myself, than there is a strong biological component of this problem which cannot be ignored.

Department of Molecular Biosciences
The University of Kansas, Lawrence, Kansas
The Section of Biochemistry and Biophysics is one of four programs within The Department of Molecular Biosciences . This program emphasizes a focus on the study of structural and functional aspects of specific biomolecules rather than of cells or whole organisms. Students and faculty in our program routinely interact with and learn from students and faculty in our other Sections, including: Biochemistry and Biophysics; Microbiology; Molecular, Cell, and Developmental Biology; and Neurobiology. These interactions are stimulated by formal departmental seminars, informal interactions in classes and in the hallways, and the choice of Ph.D. and M.A. committees. Faculty in the Section of Biochemistry and Biophysics study a variety of biological processes, including Faculty in this program offer training in a wide variety of modern biochemical and biophysical techniques, including: X-ray crystallography, NMR, EPR, and fluorescence spectroscopies, mass spectrometry, confocal microscopy, computational chemistry, protein chemistry, molecular biology, and genetics.
