The goal of this research is to isolate components linking the events of disease resistance in Arabidopsis thaliana resistant to Pseudomonas syringae mediated by the pathogen avrRpt2. The disease resistance response is being characterized in isolated mutants and the novel genes involved are being cloned. Felipe Soto-Adames University of Connecticut Systematic Biology "Molecular markers and patterns of speciation in soil inhabiting microarthropods" The organisms being studied comprise the Lepidocyrtus-Pseudosinella genera complex (Hexapoda: Collembola) in greater Puerto Rico. Collembola are the most diverse of the primitive, wingless hexapods and important to soil biology. Diversity and patterns of speciation are being determined with the use of molecular tools and geographical distribution to gain insight into the factors contributing to the evolutionary success of this important and under-studied group of organisms.

This research compares genetic structure to spatial structure of the populations and estimates the relative importance of migration, founder effects and genetic drift. This study illustrates the potential role of population genetic structure for management efforts in terrestrial riparian corridors.

    Clinical Services The Division of Rheumatology provides a full spectrum of Rheumatological consulting services to both in-patients and ambulatory patients. The majority of these patients are from South Eastern Ontario, but a number are from other areas of the Country. Patients are seen by referral only. The Division provides specialized out-patient clinics in General Rheumatology, but has also focused interests in Rheumatoid Arthritis, Osteoarthritis, Connective Tissue Disease, Osteoporosis and the Lupus Anticoagulant Syndrome. Active Consultation Service is provided for the in-patients of the Centre, which have been consolidated at the Kingston General Hospital. Active consultation service is also provided for St. Mary’s of the Lake Hospital, the Rehabilitation Hospital. The Division is also closely linked with the Arthritis Society Home Therapy Service, through the Ambulatory Care Program.

    What can I do with a Biochemisty or Molecular Biology degree? From 1992 to 2001, the Biology Department has graduated 379 majors, including those majoring in Biochemistry and Molecular Biology, a recently (1999) added major that is offered jointly by the Biology and Chemistry Departments. During this time period , 53% of our majors have gone into careers or graduate/professional programs in biology or related fields, 25% have gone onto professional schools in medical, veterinary, dental, or optometry fields, and 17% have entered graduate school. A more detailed account of the Biology majors is provided in the following table.

    • This textbook is designed specifically for the one-semester biochemistry course for chemistry, biology, and allied health majors. It is the shortest textbook on the market. Chapters are arranged so that structure and metabolism of major biomolecules are discussed in a coherent manner. Biochemistry: The Molecular Basis of Life, as the name implies, emphasizes the biochemisty of living organisms.     Institute of Biochemisty, Academic Hospital Center; University of Giessen, Germany A tegument-associated protein of 22 kD is expressed on Schistosoma mansoni larvae and adult worms. We have cloned this molecule from a S. japonicum cDNA library as recombinant His-tag-protein (rSj22) and purified it to near homogeneity. To be tested as potentially serodiagnostic antigen, rSj22 was dissolved in appropriate buffer and applied to nitrocellulose in a manner analogous to writing with ink on paper.
