Living organisms use the same 20 amino acids to make their proteins. In addition, all life uses the same DNA triplet codes. All life uses ATP as its usable form of energy. This supports the idea that all life has descended from a common ancestor. During the long history of life on earth, the protein sequences of various molecules have slowly changed. Organisms that are very closely related will have few or no changes in their protein sequences. The protein that makes up cytochrome C in the mitochondria is composed of over 100 amino acids. Some of the amino acids in this protein change over long periods of time. We find that comparing these sequences in living organisms today will reveal evolutionary relationships. For example, two living species who shared a common ancestor 500 million years ago will have more differences in their amino acids sequences than two species who shared a common ancestor 10 million years ago. Use the table below to answer the following: 1. Which organism below is the most distantly related to humans?

The Premedical Advisor will assist the student in determining the entrance requirements of the profession school being considered, since these requirements vary among schools. In general, these profession schools specify for entrance a core set of science courses which include one year (two semesters) each of biology, general chemistry, organic chemistry, physics, and mathematics. Most schools recommend that candidates plan a broad course of study leading to either a B.A. or a B.S. degree in any discipline.     Basic Chemistry I. All matter on the earth is made up of a 90 naturally occurring elements . If you had a block of pure element X, all of the atoms making up that block would have the same structure. The atoms of one element are different in structure from the atoms of another element. All of the elements have a particular one or two letter designation referred to as an atomic symbol. Elements rarely occur in their pure form; usually they are mixed with or combined with the atoms of other elements to form the substances that are familiar to us. II. The Atom Atoms are the basic particles of the elements and are made up of sub-atomic particles (protons, electrons and neutrons). These particles are in turn made up of smaller particles but we won't go into that. We will use an exceptionally simple model of the atom in our discussions (the Bohr Model). For this class, this model is sufficient. If you are going to truly understand organic chemistry and biochemistry, you will learn a more complex model of the atom (the quantum model) that more closely approximates what an atom probably is. You should recognize that these are just models and the reality of atomic structure is not now nor may not ever be fully understood. A.
