History of Nagano Olympics
The original ones were selected from the articles related to Olympics, appeared in our newspapers, which are all written in Japanese. A new software system called Internet New Esperanto (INE) was used to translate them into English and Chinese. This system is not perfect yet, so that we must excuse for incompleteness of the translation. The INE project, which aims to propose a new standard language for Internet, is developed by Shinshu University, Co.Ltd. Densan and the Shinano Mainichi Newspaper. From this language, the translations to many languages are easy, and the converse is also true. People will understand other languages more deeply and will have an occasion to be interested in them, by our INE system.

The German women's biathlon team have managed to live up to pre-race expectations by winning the 4x7.5 km relay event. The team, anchored by Kati Wilhelm, overcame a shakey start with impeccable shooting in the final half of the race to defend the title they won in Nagano in 1998. They covered the distance in one hour, 27 minutes, 55 seconds, 30.6 seconds ahead of Norway in second, while Russia narrowly beat Bulgaria for bronze. It was Germany's second team medal of the day, having won the K120 ski jumping event earlier on. BIATHLON THE SPORT
Welcome to the exciting and challenging world of Biathlon
    DEFINITION
Biathlon is an Olympic winter sport, which combines competitive, free-technique cross-country skiing and small-bore rifle marksmanship. Several other competition forms of movement and shooting - such as ski archery, snowshoe Biathlon, running and shooting and mountain bike Biathlon - are also normally included in the general category of Biathlon. The word competition is used in Biathlon instead of race because it is not only a race but a combination of two different competitive activities
    THE CHALLENGE
The combination of two very contradictory disciplines, skiing and shooting, in the same competition confronts an athlete with a very demanding challenge. Cross-country racing requires intense, full out physical exertion over an extended period of time while shooting demands extremely fine control and stability. When athletes arrive at the shooting range, they have to shoot at a very small target, with a racing heartbeat and heaving chest because the clock is running even while they are shooting. HISTORY OF BIATHLON Ancient History and Early Development The word biathlon is of Greek origin and means "two tests

Have you watched the Olympics on TV or better yet been there to experience it live? Did you ever wondered why the Olympics started? I did! If you want to be on or go to the Olympics, I think you first need to know about it. Why did the games start? At the original Olympics what games did they play? Also what games do they play today? Now, get ready for the world of the Olympics.
Have you ever wondered how the Olympics started? In Olympia, Greece the Olympic Games were held every four years. First Olympic game was recorded in 776 BC; that was about 3,000 years ago. At that time this great festival took place to honor the Greek gods. Olympics were held during the great festival. My resources say Olympics were held to please the various gods. One God, in particular, the most important was called Zeus. The Olympics were called Olympiad in Greece.
Now we know where the games are held, but we dont know what games they played? In the first thirteen Olympic games, there was only one event and that was the sprint. The sprint event was about one hundred and eight meters in length. Then later Pentathlon was added and it had different events. There was discus, javelin, jumping, running, and wrestling. After a while, they added Equestrian events and that included chariot racing and riding. The Ancient Olympics did have lots of events. They had two major events Equestrian and Pentathlon events.

    BIATHLON HISTORY
Biathlon - modern winter sport - represents ski racing with guns on the stated distances and shooting on targets from lying and standing positions at firing borderline.
Specific feature of biathlon consists in complex combination of kinds of sports different in physiological effect on an organism - ski racing and shooting - in one competition
Biathlon appeared as a result of competitions connected with ski racing and shooting held for many years in our country and abroad.
The first competitions in skiing with shooting were held in 1767 in Norway. Among three numbers of the program 2 prizes were intended to skiers, who during the descent from a decline of an average slope will get in the definite target from a gun in the distance of 40-50 steps.
In spite of so early origination biathlon was not spread in other countries. Biathlon development in a modern kind began only in the beginning of XX century.
In 20s-30s militarized skiing competitions were widely spread in the Red Army. Sportsmen went a distance of 50 km overcoming different obstacles.
Later on militarized ski races with guns were changed, becoming closer to sports competitions. So, patrols races appeared, consisting of command race on 30 km with guns and shooting at finish.
