Answers to your e-mail questions. History of the Winter Games Winter Olympics Harasta: Up close A look at biathlon THE SPORT'S NO-NOS Biathletes must not miss a target. If they do, they must either add one minute to their time in individual events or do a 150-meter penalty lap on a loop of the trail in the relay events. Biathletes must not forget to pat teammates on the back to signify a change-over. That's the official shift-change move, not merely a gesture of goodwill. Biathletes must not forget to study their ski wax; the wrong wax for snow conditions can cost a race. Teams have special wax experts on staff. Biathletes must not take longer than about 15 seconds to hit all five targets if they want to be among their sport's elite. Biathletes must not use any rifle not in the proper weight range of between 7.7 and 9.9 pounds. The standard biathlon equipment is a .22 caliber, bolt-action rifle.

Capt. Rick Oliver, Company A 270th Support Battalion, rips a page out Olympic History, so to speak, with an image reminiscent of the the 1980 Winter Olympics when the U.S. Hockey Team ignited American pride that had been latent for several years. Images of U.S. Hockey team members wrapped in U.S. flags, or skating around an ice rink waving the "Old Glory" still linger as a team given little chance of even making the medal rounds, surprised the world by defeating the Soviets for the Gold medal. Here, Rick brings home the California flag after the California National Guard biathlon team pulled off an equally surprising accomplishment: finishing third and qualifying two skiers for the "All -Guard team at the National Guard Bureau's 2000 Biathlon Championships at Camp Ripley, Minn. Oliver, and teammate Spec. Sergei Vinogradov, will now train for the 2000 Winter Olympic Trials.

4 Gold Medals to one nation. Norway rewrote the record books today! Egil Gjelland. Halvard Hanevold. Halvard, Frode, Egil and Ole Einar were the winning team - Ole Einar crossing the finish line at Soldier Hollow obtaining his 4th gold. Ole Einar said, “I had a scare when I had an equipment problem during the race which caused me to lose some time, but I still felt I had control of the gold.” It was a little more exiting who was going to win the silver and bronze medals after the last shooting. France went out right in front of Germany, but in a downhill about 400 meters before the finish line the German passed France taking the silver medal.
The French Team was however very satisfied with the bronze medal. The conditions for shooting were challenging with the falling snow, but the Norwegians were not affected and their shooting scores were high and their skiing first class!

Associated Press Norway's Ole Einar Bjoerndalen, who has won three gold medals at the 2002 Olympic Games, is going for another one today in the 30-kilometer biathlon relay event. The Norwegian wants to make it four, moving him into a much more elite group. Only two Olympians have won four gold medals in one Winter Olympics: American speedskater Eric Heiden and Russian speedskater Lydia Skoblikova. Heiden won five at the 1980 Lake Placid Games; Skoblikova won four at the 1964 Innsbruck Games. Bjoerndalen, the first biathlete to win three gold medals in the same games, has a shot to join them.

Germany claims women's biathlon gold and silver
Associated Press MIDWAY, Utah - Kati Wilhelm, the least-heralded of Germany's biathletes in the 7.5-kilometer sprint, charged to an early lead and held on to win her first Olympic gold medal today. Wilhelm was precise in her shooting, making 10-of-10 on the Soldier Hollow target range. Teammate Uschi Disl, the most decorated female biathlete in Olympic history with six medals, finished 36.4 seconds back to take the silver. Disl could have made the race a lot closer if she hadn't missed her final target, forcing her to head to the penalty loop before entering the final lap. Sweden's Magdalena Forsberg, the sport's dominant woman for the past five years, needed a furious finish to win her second bronze of the games. Forsberg edged Norwegian Liv Grete Skjelbreid-Poiree by 2.7 seconds. Forsberg, who missed a shot early and was sixth entering the final lap, slumped to the snow after charging across the line.

Brief History of the Olympic Games
Ancient Olympic Games Chronology of athletic events added to the Olympic Games Myths and the Olympic Games Pelops myth ... Athens for Olympic Games of 2004
Ancient Olympic Games The Olympic Games begun at Olympia in Greece in 776 BC. The Greek calendar was based on the Olympiad, the four-year period between games. The games were staged in the wooded valley of Olympia in Elis. Here the Greeks erected statues and built temples in a grove dedicated to Zeus, supreme among the gods. The greatest shrine was an ivory and gold statue of Zeus. Created by the sculptor Phidias, it was considered one of the Seven Wonders of the World. Scholars have speculated that the games in 776 BC were not the first games, but rather the first games held after they were organized into festivals held every four years as a result of a peace agreement between the city-states of Elis and Pisa. The Eleans traced the founding of the Olympic games to their King Iphitos, who was told by the Delphi Oracle to plant the olive tree from which the victors' wreaths were made. According to Hippias of Elis, who compiled a list of Olympic victors c.400 BC, at first the only Olympic event was a 200-yard dash, called a stadium. This was the only event until 724 BC, when a two-stadia race was added. Two years later the 24-stadia event began, and in 708 the pentathlon was added and wrestling became part of the games. This pentathlon, a five-event match consisted of running, wrestling, leaping, throwing the discus, and hurling the javelin. In time boxing, a chariot race, and other events were included.

The origins of the biathlon go back to ancient times. Archaeological findings along the rugged northern coast of Norway dating back 4000 years and Neolithic carvings traced in Russia, depict men on planks of wood, very similar to modern day skis, holding weapons. The centuries old tradition of this sport, which combines cross country skiing and shooting, can also be traced back to antique books from 1539 illustrating the Swedish Bishop Olaus Magnus. From the military academies to the Olympic Games
Between the 16th century and the first half of the 18th century, the biathlon continued to develop in the army. In 1767, a group of soldiers manning the border between Norway and Sweden organised the first biathlon competition.
The biathlon became a demonstration sport at the Winter Olympics in 1924, 1928, 1936 and 1948. In 1949, the IOC decided to include the sport in the Olympic Games, officially confirming its new status in 1955. The men's biathlon was finally held as an official Olympic sport at the 1960 Squaw Valley Winter Olympic Games. The first women's world cup was held in 1984, and the female event was eventually added to the Olympic program in 1992 at Albertville. The International Biathlon Federation (IBU) was founded on the 2nd of July 1993 and today has 59 member nations.

How The Olympic Games Began
Nearly 3,000 years of Olympic history
The Olympics first started nearly 3,000 years ago in Ancient Greece . The ancient Greek civilization enjoyed many sports—including running, boxing and wrestling—because they believed physical activity and competition were very important. Every Greek boy was expected to participate in sports , because the Greeks believed the skills they learned in sports would make them better warriors.
In honour of Zeus
The ancient Greeks also believed religion was very important. Zeus was their greatest god. The ancient Greeks built a shrine to honour Zeus in the Valley of Olympia. Greeks gathered at the shrine to play their favourite sports as part of their religious ceremonies.
In 776 B.C. the ancient Greeks first recorded the results from their sporting events held in honour of Zeus. Every four years after that these Games were held, and because they took place in the Valley of Olympia , they became known as the Olympic Games
Sports in ancient Greece
Sports in the ancient Games usually included:
  • Footracing Wrestling Chariot Racing Running Discus Long Jump Javelin Throwing
Gifts of gold
At the Games, olive wreaths were given to the winners. Winners became heroes in their hometowns, and
