First Women's World Championship Medal in U.S. History! About biathlon About USBA Biathlon community Calendar ... Support/join USBA by Brian Olsen World Junior Biathlon Championships are being held this year in the mountain village of Ridnaun, in northern Italy. Italy has been quite rewarding to American juniors, as Jay Hakkinnen claimed a victory in the sprint race at World Junior Championships in Forni Avoltri, Italy, in 1997. Lanny Barnes (Durango, CO), who won the individual race at US Olympic Trials in late December, claimed the bronze medal in that same race at World Junior Championships in Ridnaun, Italy. Barnes shot 95%, with only one miss. This is the first World Championship Medal for an American junior woman ever. The individual race penalizes competitors with one-minute time fines, added on at the completion of the race. After two days of mediocre results from the junior women's team, the other three members of the team provided back-up to Lanny's sensational performance. Lanny's twin sister, Tracy Barnes, recorded a top-ten finish by placing eighth, with two misses. Carolyn Treacy (Duluth, MN) skied exceptionally well, placing 17th, even with five missed targets. She skied the seventh fastest out of the 63 competitors. All seventeen competitors ahead of Treacy missed four or fewer targets. Beth Ann Ellingson (Grand Rapids, MN) placed 45th with seven missed targets. The junior men's team has had two great days of racing, providing four top-twenty results. Today's individual race proved to be a bit different. Walt Shepard (Yarmouth, ME), who cleaned a sprint race at US Olympic Trials and is an amazing shooter, was expected to do well in the race, for accurate shooting is of the essence. However, his shooting failed to materialize in the range, and he missed seven of his twenty targets. Tim Burke (Paul Smiths, NY) provided the team's best result, with an admirable 31st place. He missed six targets in all, but skied the 7th fastest. Anders Osthus missed ten targets to finish in 72nd place. Osthus is an extremely talented skier, and is slowly making his way to becoming a full-time biathlete. It just takes time. All of the junior men have an additional year of competition ahead of them in the junior category. They will be competing in tomorrow's relay competition, which should prove exciting for both the athletes and fans.

E-MAIL THIS STORY Bjoerndalen shoots, skis to 2nd gold By Landon Hall, Associated Press February 14, 2002 MIDWAY, Utah Calmly hitting all 10 targets, Norway's Ole Einar Bjoerndalen coasted to the gold medal in the 10-kilometer sprint Wednesday, winning his second gold of the games and becoming the first biathlete to win three in a career. Bjoerndalen, who also won Monday's 20-kilometer race by making 18 of 20 shots, finished in 24 minutes, 51.3 seconds 28.9 seconds ahead of Germany's Sven Fischer, who missed once. Austria's Wolfgang Perner was a surprising bronze winner, shooting cleanly to finish 53.1 seconds back. Bjoerndalen, who earlier defended the 15-kilometer title he won in Nagano, now has four medals including one silver in the past two Olympics. He races next in Saturday's 12.5-kilometer pursuit.

History / Legacy One of the most frequently asked questions is the origin of the name. It is very likely that Soldier Hollow was named for a company of soldiers under the command of Captain James H. Simpson. In 1859, Simpson was ordered to conduct a survey in search of a shorter route between Camp Floyd, Utah and Fort Bridger, Wyoming. A stopover in this area of the Wasatch Mountains provided the historical reference. Soldier Hollow in Wasatch Mountain State Park was selected as the 10th and final Olympic competition venue in October 1997. Mountain Dell had originally been proposed as the Olympic cross-country skiing and biathlon site, but Soldier Hollow emerged as the best replacement when a venue change was necessary to protect a watershed area. With its selection as an Olympic venue, the transformation of Soldier Hollow began into a world-class location for competitors and spectators. The basic footprint of the area was completed in 1999. Soldier Hollow hosted World Cup events in 2001 in biathlon, cross-country skiing and nordic combined as pre-Olympic test events. The venue has also been the site of national championships in biathlon and cross country. In February and March 2002, Soldier Hollow hosted 23 events during the Olympic Winter Games and 15 events during the Paralympic Winter Games. Soldier Hollow is unprecedented among world-class venues in that the terrain is open and less wooded ideal for spectators with about two-thirds of the course visible at all times. The course is also designed to maximize the number of times the competitors ski through the stadium.

This information is partly taken from the book “Biathlon- Vom Randsport zum Publikumsrenner”. History While hunting on skis was used to be a basis for existence in the antiquity, this combination of hunter, weapon and skis became very important for war purposes during the centuries after that. Skiing regiments and hunter battalions were drawn up in highland countries and slowly the Military Patrol Run developed. At that time it was used to demonstrate the troops’ ability to the public. Since the thirties of the last century the Military Patrol Run belonged to the program of the Army championships and international Military Sport Games, and it became a demonstration sport in the Olympics in 1928. After the second World War this sports was thrust into the background again. Then, in 1949, a new Olympic Committee was formed, different models of winter sports were discussed and the combination of skiing and shooting got the award. With this, the beginning of the entirely sportive biathlon was founded. After the appreciation by the “Union Internationale de Pentathlon Modern” the first biathlon World Championships took place in Saalfelden/AUT in 1958. Firstly biathlon was taken into the Olympic program in Squaw Valley in 1960.

Although the sport is technically just 27 years old - competitions dating back to California in 1973 before the Hawaiian Ironman challenge, which is regarded as the sport's true origin in 1978 - its individual components are, of course, ancient: swimming, cycling, running. Collins enjoyed himself so much that he decided it would be a good idea to combine Hawaii's Waikiki Roughwater Swim, Around-Oahu Bike Race and Honolulu Marathon as one event; that meant an exhausting schedule involving a 3.85 kilometres open water swim, a 179 kilometres cycle and a 42 kilometres run. The Ironman challenge was born.
