Seattle document.write(lmonth + " "); document.write(date + ", " + year); Sports Home College/NCAA Golf Mariners/MLB ... Palm/PDA Info. BIATHLON Biathlon is an Olympic winter sport, which combines competitive, free-technique cross-country skiing and small-bore rifle marksmanship. It has been said that to compete in biathlon, athletes must be able to transform themselves from a rabbit to a rock. They must push their heart and lungs to their limits while skiing, and then calm their bodies to squeeze off shots in the firing range. There are eight biathlon events in the Olympic program. Men and women will compete in a sprint, pursuit, individual and relay. The pursuit is making its Olympic debut at the Salt Lake Games. The men's events will be the 10km, 20km and 4x7.5km relay and a 12.5km pursuit, while the women will compete in the 7.5km, the 15km and 4x7.5km relay and a 10km pursuit. For both men and women, the 7.5km and the 10km events are commonly referred to as "sprint" races while the 15km and 20km events are commonly referred to as "individual" races. Interactive Extras Biathlon media from AP Each event requires skiing a number of loops around preset courses. After each loop is skied, competitors stop at the shooting range to fire at five metal targets.

Developers' Digest
My inspiration - Conrad, Johan and Colin (Far Right).
Thanks to my wife and kids for all the support in making this dream come true. Thank you again for visiting this web site, and I trust you will return
to this site more often. I figured that getting to know me, would help in understanding where I am going to. I was born in Pretoria (South Africa) in 1964. I matriculated in 1982, completed two year military service, and then did my BSc (QS) at Tukkies (University of Pretoria). My love for sport started at an early age, and my main disciplines were swimming and running. Cycling I only did as a means of getting to and from school. I went through a resting period between the ages of 25 to 30, and I started running again in 1995. Since then I have completed:
  • Two Comrades Marathons (1996 and 1998),
  • Six Two Oceans Ultra Marathons (1995-2000),
  • Two City to City (50km) Ultra Marathons.
That's about me for ultras. Did quite a few marathons, 32km's, and all the shorter distances. I wouldn't qualify for any records, representing the province, country or universe, so basically I'm the ordinary sportsman with an enthusiasm second to none for individual sport and especially in the development thereof. I like to compete against myself though!
The Web site Idea
The main idea of Sports Digest started with the creation of a database of registered athletes in South Africa. Initially the emphasis and planning will be concentrated around the requirements of road running in South Africa as far as reports are concerned, but other sporting activities will follow shortly.

Information about sports for military women isn't exactly easy to find. In the '50s we were lucky if our uniforms matched - or fit. As you can see by the mixture in the pictures from the '50s. And though the men were flown from base to base we often had to "bus it". But we did have softball and basketball teams. Basketball at Hamilton AFB '52 Softball at Hamilton AFB '52 Softball Team Hamilton AFB '52 Then way back in the '60s we were told to stop encouraging team sports for women because it was "unladylike". Some of us ignored those "suggestions" and the young women - at least in my former squadron at McGuire AFB - appreciated having the chance to compete. In fact their abilities resulted in lots of these: When the 1970s saw the end of all female units and the beginning of integration servicewomen's sports teams were lost in the shuffle. But there were some fine women athletes in the military and ultimately they began to emerge as participants in individual sporting events. In the 1972 Olympics Air Force Lt. "Micki" King won the Gold Medal in diving.

First Roller Ski Biathlon Competition in NSW, held at the Croom Sporting Complex. NABA was recently invited to participate in the City of Shellharbour Sports Festival held on the 10th and 11th of March 2001
Although the weather was not ideal on the Saturday, the NSW / ACT Biathlon Association held 4 summer biathlon events on the Terry Reserve Cycle way adjacent to the Croom Sporting Complex on the Saturday of the Sports Festival. Competitors came from as far as Canberra and Sydney to compete against the Illawarra based athletes in both the Running Biathlon and Roller Ski Biathlon disciplines. Competitions included Individual and Team Relay events for both male and female categories and over 40 entries were registered. The Competitions were jointly Sponsored by BOSCO Accounting, Albion Park and ACIT Australasia, Figtree. BOSCO donated the Running Biathlon Individual and Team Trophies whilst the Roller Ski Individual and Team Trophies were kindly donated by ACIT. Results in Acrobat PDF format.
Each event required the athletes to Run or Roller Ski a main loop of almost 1 km after which they attempted to shoot a series of 5 targets at a distance of 50m using a precision electronic target shooting system. For each target missed the athlete then had to complete a short penalty loop of 50m before continuing on with the next main loop. Three laps were required by each competitor and the quickest time wins the event.

Surprise! NBC Discovers Biathlon At the 2002 Winter Olympics by Joseph P. Tartaro
Executive Editor
Over more than 20 years as editor of Gun Week I have had occasion every four years or so to excoriate American sports reporters in general, and television in particular, for its failure to reasonably report on the shooting sports, especially during the Olympics. Then the Olympic schedule changed; the Winter and Summer Games were staggered so that while they each take place every four years, they were staggered so that the TV networks that bid so much money for exclusive broadcast rights would have some kind of Olympic sports programming every two years.
Of course, that change gave me an opportunity to whip them for their failings regarding shooting sports every two years instead of four. And, while I was preparing to do so again for the 2002 Winter Olympics in Salt Lake City, the National Broadcasting Company (NBC) suddenly surprised me.
Print Reporters
On Feb. 14, The Buffalo News ran an interesting article on the biathletes written by Bucky Gleason, who was covering the Winter Olympics from Utah. Gleason began his piece with an anecdote involving two of the US biathletes, Jeremy Teela and Hakkinen.
According to Gleason, last fall Teela and Hakkinen were walking through a metal detector in the Munich (Germany) airport when they triggered the alarm system.
