TRADITIONAL RELIGION IN AFRICA: THE VODUN PHENOMENON IN BENIN Barthélemy ZINZINDOHOUE INTRODUCTION If it can be said that homo faber preceded homo sapiens , both these stages of humanity were borne by homo religiosus , an essential feature of man since the arousal of his consciousness. Indeed the religious phenomenon is not limited to a cult or an established link with the transcendent, but springs from the awareness of finiteness which gives rise to the need for the transcendent. Consequently, all men are religious, even if some are more religious than others, and the manifestations of human religiosity are numerous and owe much to the cultures of which they are the soul. In the specific case of the cultures of South Benin ( West Africa ), whose religious soul I wish briefly to present here, it appears that this is to be found in a convergent way in the phenomenon of Vodun . Most of the peoples of South Benin have very similar if not identical cultural roots, and almost the same historical origin. This is why the religious phenomenon in this geographical region is manifested most fully in Vodun (or Orisha , with the Nago or Yoruba peoples).

Amazons of Black Sparta is the first book ever published in English on the only thoroughly documented amazons in world history. They were the elite troops of the West African kingdom of Dahomey in the eighteenth and nineteenth centuries. Negar Azimi speaks to Meschac Gaba, creator of the Museum of Contemporary African Art
Click to view caption Meschac Gaba Meschac Gaba was born in 1961 in Cotonou, Benin. He worked first as a painter while his later work involved the manipulation of bank notes, addressing notions of materiality and social devaluation. He studied at the Reijksacademie in Amsterdam from 1996 to 1997, where he first started work on what would become the Museum of Contemporary African Art. Gaba's Museum is both a tangible reality and an abstraction, blurring the lines between the hyper-political and the universal, the critical and the utopian, in a manifesto on the museological institution. The Museum consists of 12 parts and the museum libraryone of the 12 is currently on display in Cairo, at the American University, after having been shown at Documenta 11 in Kassel, Germany. Composed of over 1,500 texts on the contemporary arts, the audience is free to manipulate the work by accessing the information within. Gaba lives and works in Amsterdam.

The diversity characterizing Togo and Benin is considerable. This explains its ability to offer visitors beautiful sites, colorful fauna and flora, hilly mountainous landscapes, green valleys and dry plains as well as beaches and the sun throughout the year. Togo and Benin offer a surprising diversity of landscapes and localities, ranging from the fevered atmosphere of the streets of Lomé to the serene savannah of the North and abundant coastal vegetation. Lome is known for it beaches of fine sand, its shady trees, and its diverse ambiance. Among the top attractions are the German Cathedral, the Akodessewa fetish market, the National Museum, and the highly reputed Grande Marché, center for much day-to-day commerce. In the central region, many cities and towns are veritable garden cities by virtue of theirs numerous mango and flamboyant trees. In Bassar, in the heart of the central region and adjacent to the Malkafassa forest, are the remains of one of West Africa's oldest iron smelting industries, where clay blast furnaces are still maintained by the local people. Also of interest is the Bapure River, with its sacred crocodiles and the local dance and musical styles are unique.

Faculty lecture paints picture of Benin culture
    By Jerry A. Branham
Students and faculty were immersed in images and sounds of Benin at the Faculty Lecture Series presentation, given on Thursday, Sept. 9, by Dr. Martin Japtok and Dr. James Natsis. The lecture was a debriefing on the faculty’s summer trip to Benin, a small country in West Africa, and was open to the public. The lecture began with a demonstration of native music, with Japtok and Natsis on drums and various volunteers playing maracas and other percussion instruments. Also, handouts with descriptions of Benin’s geography and history were distributed to audience members. During the presentation, various examples of Benin’s culture and society were presented, as well. According to Japtok, Benin’s sociological culture "is structured very hierarchically, so much so that people would always know [where] in that structure they could find their rank." Japtok and Natsis also showed a series of slides with images of monuments, streets, homes, and palaces, illustrating the occasionally confusing technological state of Benin by juxtaposing muddy, pothole-ridden trails against sophisticated modern concrete roads. Many of Benin’s more modern structures were built by foreign powers as gifts, such as the stadium in Cotonou. "That’s a Chinese gift; throughout Africa the Chinese . . . would go in and build huge monuments..." said Natsis.
