This lesson discusses teacher and paraeducator roles in behavior management, and provides information about behavior management plans.

Lesson 2:
Planning and Coordinating Behavior Management
Introduction
The purpose of this lesson is to examine how paraeducators and teachers can plan together in managing student behaviors. Planning for behavior management is important because it establishes a consistent approach to teaching students behaviors, provides a convenient way to document progress, assists teachers in training of paraeducators, and helps clarify specific teacher and paraeducator responsibilities. This lesson discusses teacher and paraeducator roles in behavior management, and provides information about behavior management plans.
Teacher and Paraeducator Roles in Managing Behavior
The roles and responsibilities of both paraeducators and teachers are important in managing behavior. The classroom teacher is responsible for making major decisions, creating a positive classroom environment, writing behavior plans, carrying out interventions and establishing classroom rules and procedures. Paraeducators perform a variety of tasks that are unique to their position as well. Paraeducator roles include: demonstrating, explaining, modeling, and reinforcing appropriate behavior and skills. Additional roles often include: observing, monitoring, and recording students behaviors in carrying out a particular behavior management plan. Teachers and paraeducators are equally vital in working together on behalf of students. Paraeducators may observe a number of behaviors that the supervising teacher does not see, in the classroom, the lunchroom, the playground, and the halls. Therefore, it's the paraeducator's responsibility to bring to the teacher's attention any concerns about behaviors of students they observe. Paraeducators compliment the role of the teacher in a variety of ways; they can respond immediately to students, assist in working with smaller groups and individual activities, increase monitoring, provide frequent attention, help prevent problems and deal with them quickly when they arise.

Coordinating behavior management. Teacher and Paraeducator Roles; behaviormanagement plans. lesson 3 Group management Strategies
http://para.unl.edu/para/Behavior/Intro.html
Main Directory Contents Pretest Lesson 1
Unit 5:
Behavior Management Management of student behavior is a major concern of teachers and paraeducators because of its importance in establishing a positive learning environment. Creating the opportunity to learn and develop both academic and behavioral skills is essential to an effective classroom. This unit provides paraeducators with basic information to assist them in contributing to an effective behavior management approach. The unit addresses the goals of behavior management; planning and the roles of paraeducators in carrying out behavior management; strategies which assist in managing students and promoting positive behavior; and ethical considerations related to classroom management. The intent of the unit is not to provide the paraeducator with everything they need to know about behavior management but rather to provide a starting point for working effectively with the teacher. You will notice that the focus of the unit is on finding ways to assist and support students in being successful rather than on controlling misbehavior.
Objectives
After completing this unit and its activities the paraeducator should expect to be able to:
  • Explain the purposes and philosophy of behavior management.
  • 13. Classroom Management

    1. Enhance student involvement and cooperation. 2. Establish a positive working environment.
Use these tips to strengthen your classroom management:
    • Post classroom expectations, rewards and consequences. Promote positive action. Acknowledge inappropriate behavior but reinforce the action's positive counterpart. Circulate through the room. Physical proximity to students can stop inappropriate behavior before it starts. Say please and thank you every chance you get. Incorporate music into your classroom when possible. Use your lesson plans. Post assignments daily. Post a schedule or agenda. Use positive praise. Plan for student successes. Plan for student rewards. Have a back-up activity for those unexpected events. Establish procedures for student tardiness, bathroom breaks and lack of ready-to-use supplies. Have something to for students to do when they complete assignments early. Use cooperative learning strategies. Catch students being good and reinforce that behavior. Tell students you appreciate their efforts and class contributions. Make sure your students know what to do in the classroom.

PUTTING STUDENTS TO WORK ON CLASSROOM DISCIPLINE
From Katherine Mitchem, West Virginia University
and Julieann Benyo, Ogden City School District, Ogden, Utah Students in middle school and high school can take charge of their own behavior and classroom discipline with some encouragement, and perhaps an element of competition to make it exciting. A pair of educators in Maryland developed a self-management plan, tested on middle-school students, that builds on the "thumbs up, thumbs down" feedback method many teachers use with very young children. The plan gives teachers a quiet way, without disrupting their teaching, to let students know when they are not acting appropriately.
TEACHING STUDENTS SELF-MANAGEMENT: MORE THAN JUST PRACTICAL

March 20, 2000 STUDENTS LEARN TO:
    • Stay "on task," a term that is defined and frequently repeated to help all students understand the common goal
    • Take leadership roles within the class, helping to run the program to free teachers up to teach rather than police the students

The Nurtured Heart Approach is an amazing set of strategies developed specifically for children with ADHD and other challenging behaviors to facilitate parenting and classroom success. These methods have helped thousands of families to transform their child from using their intensity in primarily negative ways to using their intensity in beautifully creative and constructive ways. This approach has also helped teachers and other school personnel to have a dramatically positive effect on all children. Alfie Kohn
