The Panda Bear in Chinese culture In the second century AD the giant panda was a rare and semi-divine animals inside China . In the Han dynasty (206 BC-AC 24) the emperor's garden in the then capital Xian held nearly 40 rare animal specials, of which the panda was the most highly treasured, and the poet Bai Juyi (AD 772-846) credited the panda with the power to prevent disease and exorcise evil spirits. Panda skins appear scattered throughout the Chinese imperial records, as gifts or tribute on great occasions of states. But the animal was totally unknown outside the secretive "Middle Kingdom" until the declining Qing Dynasty was slowly forced to open its doors to trade and Christianity towards the end of the nineteenth century. Biology of the Giant Panda Bear
Ailuropoda melanoleuca ) - This scientific name means "black and white cat-footed animal." Evolution
The giant panda itself appeared suddenly during the late Pliocene or early Pleistocene, perhaps no more than two to three million years ago. Panda fossils have been found in Burma, Vietnam, and particularly in early in eastern China, as far north as Beijing. Physiology
Giant pandas are bear-like in shape with striking black and white markings. The ears, eye patches, legs, and shoulder band are black; the rest of the body is whitish. They have a thick, woolly coat to insulate them from the cold. Adults are 4 to 6 feet long and may weigh up to 350 pounds, about the same size as the American black bear. However, unlike the black bear, giant pandas do not hibernate and cannot walk on their hind legs. They have plantigrade feet (i.e., both heel and toe make contact with the ground when walking in a manner similar to humans). With few other enemies other than people the lifespan of a wild Panda is about 25 years or more.

The Panda Bear
The Panda Bear is a probably the most famous Endangered Animal. The Panda lives in six small areas located in China . In China they call the Panda "Xiongmao", which means Giant Cat Bear. The Panda was believed to have magical powers that could ward off natural disasters and evil spirits. Writings about the Pandas can be traced back 3,000 years. They were even kept as pets by Chinese Emperors. The Panda was first introduced to the Western world in 1869 by a French missionary. He sent a pelt to a Museum in Paris. Panda Bears eat over fifteen different kinds of Bamboo. Because of a inefficient intestinal system the Panda must feed for 12 to 16 hours a day, they can consume 22 to 40 pounds of Bamboo each day. When they eat fresh Bamboo shoots they eat about 84 pounds every day. The giant panda bear only exists today in six small areas located in inland China. The habitat, suitable for the bamboo on which it survives, is a cold, damp coniferous forest. The elevation ranges from 4,000 to 11,000 feet high. In most of the areas in which they still roam wild, they must compete with farmers who farm the river valleys and the lower slopes of the mountains. It is estimated that there are somewhere around 700 and 1,000 giant pandas still alive in the wild. Because they rely on bamboo as their main food they will remain in danger unless their habbitat is expanded. The differing varieties of bamboo go through periodic die-offs as part of their renewal cycle. Without the ability to move into new areas that have not been affected many Pandas will starve to death. When die-offs occur the bears that do try to find a new place to feed often run into farmers and pochers.

    Giant Pandas: Bamboo Bears

Giant pandas are only the most dramatic-looking of a unique fauna and flora that survive precariously along the edge of the Tibetan Plateau. (See China's Wildlife Wonders ) Golden monkeys, takin, red pandas, and an array of colorful pheasants live in the same mountains as the giant pandas. All are now vulnerable to extinction as people continue to destroy the ecological integrity of the Min, Qinling, Liang, and Qionglai Mountains. These slopes are also home to an amazing radiation of bamboo species, upon which giant pandas depend for 99 percent of their diet. At least two species of bamboos usually grow within good giant panda habitat. The life history of bamboos can dramatically affect giant pandas. These particular bamboos tend to flower, set seed, and die at species-specific intervals of 30 to 80 years. Plants of any particular species do this in synchrony, leading to a massive die-off of that species throughout its range, followed by slow regeneration. (See Bamboo During the long regeneration period, giant pandas have traditionally had two options. They could switch to eating a second, less preferred bamboo species, or they could move, usually to an area where the local bamboo had not flowered and died. But now, because their habitat is so fragmented, the migration option is becoming less and less viable for giant pandas faced with severe food shortages. With the lower mountain slopes being used for agriculture, the distances between habitable areas have become too great for giant pandas to traverse. Only secure "corridors" of natural habitat linking larger areas of panda habitat will alleviate this problem.

    Giant Panda
Giant Panda, common name for a bear found in provinces of western China. The giant panda resembles other bears in general appearance, with the exception of the black patches over its eyes, ears, and legs and the black band across its shoulders. Giant pandas live in bamboo forests at high elevations and feed primarily on bamboo. Unlike other bears, they vocalize by bleating rather than roaring. Females weigh about 80 kg (about 180 lb), and males weigh about 100 kg (about 220 lb). The giant panda's so-called sixth front toe is not a digit or claw but an enlarged wrist bone that functions as a thumb in grasping food. Giant pandas feed almost exclusively on bamboo, which is not highly nutritious. Furthermore, some bamboo species flower simultaneously and die shortly afterward, occasionally leading to starvation among giant panda populations. If their usual food supply is threatened, giant pandas may feed on gardens, crops, and even chickens, but they are little threat to people except in close encounters. The habitats of family groups and the survival of juvenile giant pandas are still poorly understood. Giant pandas seem to have no permanent den and do not hibernate, although they shelter in the winter in dens or hollow trees. Giant pandas are fairly solitary most of the year. Females may live in loose groups within the range of a dominant male.

Our facts and information is perfect for school reports, teachers, Panda Lovers and more! General: Panda Bears, cute and adorable, are on the endangered species list. Their habitat, extremely limited diet and poor reproductive and infant survival combine to extremely threaten their survival. There are two kinds of Pandas. The giant white and black Panda is the one that comes to mind for most of us. But, there is also the Red Panda which is also called the lesser Panda. There are very few Pandas left in the wild and zoologists have been largely unsuccessful in breeding them in captivity up to now. The Chinese government has taken steps to protect these endangered animals. Pandas are only found in a relatively small area in Asia. They date back two to three million years ago . Ancient chinese history and writings abound with mention of the Panda. They were kept by emperors and their hides were highly valued. They carried a mystique and were believed to be able to ward off evil spirits and natural disasters. Pandas live in and around mountainous slopes and exist on a diet largely comprised of bamboo shoots. They eat most of the day to consume the food they need for survival. There are about fifteen types of bamboo, reach with varying life cycles. Panda Bears eat primarily bamboo shoots. As die-offs in the bamboo cycle occur, the panda population also fall.
