HISTORY
A MESSAGE FROM OUR FOUNDER Hello, my name is Alexander Cartwright IV. In 1845, in the City of New York, my great, great, grandfather, Alexander Cartwright Jr., along with members of his Knickerbocker Base Ball Club, virtually invented the modern game of baseball. Unfortunately my ancestor has never been given the proper honor and recognition that he deserves. His story has been overshadowed for all these many years by the myth that the game was invented by Abner Doubleday, when in actual fact Doubleday never had anything to do with baseball in his whole life! Well, the tme has come to set the record straight! And what better way to do so, than on the world wide web. That's why I founded Mr. Baseball. I feel it's time that the whole world knew the true story of the origin of baseball...and of my illustrious ancestor's role in it. But that's not the only purpose of Mr. Baseball... I am also bound and determined to make Mr. Baseball the prime source for baseball history on the Intertnet...as we cover 150 years of baseball history in detail. Plus, I am also intent on making Mr. Baseball the best location on the web to shop for baseball memorabilia and collectibles...and, a great place for baseball fans, such as myself, to discuss baseball issues (of both past and present eras) with fellow fans, sportswriters and celebrities. I only ask that you start your journey through baseball history at the beginning... with a saga of the man to whom Mr. Baseball is dedicated, my great, great grandfather, Alexander Cartwright Jr....for his story has been overlooked for far, far too long.

Baseball: "Invention"
and Early Growth (1845-1869)
In 1842, a group of young professionals began meeting regularly to play baseball on a field at 47th Avenue and 27th Street in Manhattan. Three years later, they formed the Knickerbocker Base Ball Club , evidently at the suggestion of Alexander Cartwright, the owner of a book and stationery store who had once been a volunteer fireman with the Knickerbocker Engine Company. A four-man committee was appointed to draft a constitution and by-laws. Cartwright and the committee's president, Daniel L. "Doc" Adams, did most of the work on the by-laws, which became baseball's first formal rules. The rules called for four bases in a square, 42 paces (about 126 feet) on each diagonal. The batter was placed at the fourth base, which was renamed "home." "Soaking" was eliminated; a runner had to be tagged or forced out. The batter was out if his batted ball was caught on the fly or on first bounce. The new rules also established three strikes for an out and three outs in a half-inning. A game lasted until one team scored twenty-one runs, or "aces" as they were then called.
