Photo: Shafiqul Alam/Oxfam Bangladesh has been independent since 16 December 1971. The current government is led by Sheikh Hasina Wazed of the Awami League party. In the nineteenth century India was ruled by the British. Their policies meant that most land in what is now Bangladesh came to be owned by wealthy Hindus. The rents were set so high that poor farmers were forced off the land. Those who remained were ordered to grow crops to sell overseas, rather than food to eat. This led to terrible food shortages and to riots. The British left India in 1947. In August 1947 parts of India were divided off, creating Pakistan. Introduction Factfile Oxfam in Bangladesh

Article List Next Bangladesh : History and Culture By Professor A F Salahuddin Ahmed Compared to many other states of the modern world, Bapgladesh is a new state but the home of an old civilization. Geography and history have marked Bengal as a distinct region and the Bengali-speaking people as a distinct community. This distinctiveness, however, was recognized long ago. Since ancient times, this land has drawn invaders and immigrants belonging to various races and tribes who had come from different parts of the world. Many of them had settled here permanently and in course of time were assimilated with the local population. The varied cultural elements which they had brought with them from outside were blended with those of indigenous origin, and through this process, society and culture of Bengal had acquired richness and variety and had undergone transformation through the ages. Till the early part of the eighth century, Hinduism held sway over Bengal which was first part of the Maurya empire and Bangabandhu Sheikh Mujibur Rahman later was incorporated into the empire of the imperial Guptas. After the collapse of Hindu central authority around sixth century A.D., the region was ruled by successive local Hindu dynasties. Between

Currently BAIRA has about 700 Government Approved Recruiting Agents as its member. ACHIEVEMENTS : Manpower is one of the major national resources of Bangladesh. About 35 million people constitute this vast reservoir of manpower. Fortunately Bangladesh is steadily turning her manpower into an asset through training and skill development with a view to meeting the needs of a modern economy. It is not possible for Bangladesh to absorb the full range of available unskilled, semi-skilled and professional manpower within the country in an appropriate manner and hence the need to find employment opportunities for them abroad till her economy could absorb them locally. There are also a number of foreign countries who are in need of importing manpower from other countries. Today Bangladesh is considered as a good source. With a modes beginning in 1976, Bangladesh has, by now, become a notable exporter of manpower. Between 1976 to 2001 a total of more than three million Bangladeshis have been able to secure employment in foregn countries, particularly in countries of the Middle East and Malaysia, Singapore of south Korea through the members of BAIRA. The Bangladeshis currently working abroad range from domestic aides to Atomic Scientists. The main objective of the BAIRA members is to ensure supply of quality manpower at a minimum cost within the time schedule given by the employers.

Flag: Green with a large red circle a little to the hoist side of centre. Original flag had a golden map of Bangladesh in the red circle (see above and note it is the map I prefer). The flag has a ratio of 10:6 and the circle has a radius of one fifth of the length of the flag. Today many try to say that the green represents the green of Islam. This is even taught in schools and espoused by many western writers but is not true. The green has nothing to do with Islam but the green mother nature of Bangladesh. (

THE ROOTS "Bangladesh has a hundred gates open for entrance but not one for departure" -Bernier. Bangladesh is a new state in an ancient land. It has been described by an American political scientist as "a country challenged by contradictions". On the face of it, the recent twists and turns of her history are often inconsistent. It is neither a distinct geographical entity, nor a well-defined historical unit. Nevertheless, it is the homeland of the ninth largest nation in the world whose gropings for a political identity were protracted, intense and agonizing. The key to these apparent contradictions lies in her history Etymologically, the word Bangladesh is derived from the cognate "Vanga" which was first mentioned in the Hindu scripture Aitareya Aranyaka (composed between 500 B C and 500 A D). Legend has it that Bengal was first colonized by Prince Vanga, the son of King Bali and Queen Sudeshna of the Lunar dynasty. According to linguists, the roots of the term Vanga may be traced to languages in the adjoining areas. One school of linguists maintain that the word "Vanga" is derived from the Tibetan word "Bans" which implies "wet and moist". According to this interpretation, Bangladesh literally refers to a wetland. Another school is of the opinion that the term "Vangla" is derived from Bodo (aborigines of Assam) words "Bang" and "la" which connote "wide plains." Proto-history and Pre-history
