First Bioscope Show
The cinema, one of the wonders of our times, came to this subcontinent back in 19th century. The first bioscope show was held at Watson Hotel in Bombay on 7th July, 1896. A little later the bioscope arrived in Calcutta, the capital city of undivided Bengal. John Stevens, Hudson and Father Laffaun of Saint Xavier's College were the pioneers of bioscope shows in Calcutta.
Its gathered that Stevens exhibited bioscope shows also in Dhaka during the year of 1896-97 with a touring Theatre company though the documentary evidence of Stevens' shows are not available. According to Bengali weekly Dhaka Prokash , the Dhakaities had their first views of bioscope in 1898 at The Crown Theatre which was located at Patuatuli near Sadarghat in Dhaka city. The exhibition was arranged by a Calcutta-based company named Bredford Bioscope Company.
It is interesting to note the main features of the show:
  • The Diamond jubilee procession of Queen Victoria. The Greek-Turkish war. Princess Diana's jump above 300 feet. Coronation ceremony of Russian Tsar.

Mention of a kingdom known as Vanga or Banga (hence Bengal or Bangladesh) is found in early Sanskrit literature of India (c. 1000 BC).
Bengal was predominantly Hindu by the 10th century. Muslim influence started in the 10th century and over the next five centuries the population of what is now Bangladesh was converted to Islam. The Europeans arrived as traders during the 17th century, and in 1651 the British East India Company established a trading settlement in Bengal. At the battle of Plessey in 1757, Robert Clive defeated the nawab (ruler) of Bengal, which marked the beginning of British rule. When the British let the sub-continent in 1947, East Bengal became East Pakistan, a part of the Muslim state of Pakistan, but separated from West Pakistan by a thousand miles and a different language and culture. Bengali nationalist sentiment increased after the creation of an independent Pakistan, which climaxed in a short bloody war in 1971.
On December 16 1971, East Bengal became the independent nation of Bangladesh with its capital at Dhaka.

History
Bangladesh came into being through a long history of political evolution. Bengal was probably the wealthiest part of the subcontinent till the 16th century. The early history featured a succession of Indian empires, internal squabbling and a tussle between Hinduism and Buddhism for dominance. All of these were just a prelude to the rise of Islam over northern India at the end of the 12th century. Mohammed Bakhtiar Khalzhi from Turkistan captured Bengal in 1199 with only 20 men. Then came the Mughal rule. Under the Mughal viceroys, art and literature flourished, overland trade expanded and Bengal was opened to world maritime trade - the latter marking the death knell of Mughal power as Europeans began to establish themselves in the region. The Portuguese arrived as early as the 15th century but were ousted in 1633 by local opposition. The East India Company negotiated terms to establish a fortified trading post in Calcutta in 1690.

History and Government
History: Bangladesh was formerly East Pakistan, a constituent of the original state of Pakistan created by the British in 1947 as part of the partitioning of Britain's former Indian Empire. The two halves of the country were separated by more than 1000 miles of Indian territory, creating an almost certain recipe for political tension. Disputes over language and political power came to a head in 1970 when the pro-independence Awami League won an overwhelming majority in what turned out to be East Pakistan's last general election. The Pakistani army blocked the Awami leader, Sheikh Mujibur Rahman, from taking up the premiership. The Awami leadership announced East Pakistan's secession, after which the country was rapidly consumed by civil war. The war lasted for most of 1971 and was brought to an end by the intervention of India which forced Pakistan to surrender.
Political stability proved elusive as, during the next 20 years, the country was overtaken by a succession of military coups along with frequent impositions of martial law and states of emergency. However, since the beginning of the 1990s, civilians have controlled the Government. The main political parties, the Awami League and the Bangladesh National Party (BNP

Group B, Pietermaritzburg: Sri Lanka 126-0 (21.1 overs) bt Bangladesh 124 all out (31.1 overs) by 10 wickets
Vaas made history with his first three balls Photos from the match Match scorecard Chaminda Vaas made history by taking a hat-trick with the first three balls of the game as Sri Lanka recorded a crushing 10-wicket victory over Bangladesh. Vaas then added a fourth victim in his opening over before finishing with six for 25. Bangladesh, who ended the first over on five for four, partially recovered from the shock before being dismissed for 124 in the 32nd over. But Sri Lanka needed only 21.1 overs to reach their target, openers Marvan Atapattu and Sanath Jayasuriya both registering half-centuries. Jayasuriya's decision to put Bangladesh in after winning the toss paid off in startling fashion as Vaas claimed four wickets in his opening over. When Vaas got that hat-trick, the match all changed

entrance but not one for departure" -Bernier. Bangladesh is a new state in an ancient land. It has been described by an American political scientist as "a country challenged by contradictions". On the face of it, the recent twists and turns of her history are often inconsistent. It is neither a distinct geographical entity, nor a well-defined historical unit. Nevertheless, it is the homeland of the ninth largest nation in the world whose gropings for a political identity were protracted, intense and agonizing. The key to these apparent contradictions lies in her history Etymologically, the word Bangladesh is derived from the cognate "Vanga" which was first mentioned in the Hindu scripture Aitareya Aranyaka (composed between 500 B C and 500 A D). Legend has it that Bengal was first colonized by Prince Vanga, the son of King Bali and Queen Sudeshna of the Lunar dynasty. According to linguists, the roots of the term Vanga may be traced to languages in the adjoining areas. One school of linguists maintain that the word "Vanga" is derived from the Tibetan word "Bans" which implies "wet and moist". According to this interpretation, Bangladesh literally refers to a wetland. Another school is of the opinion that the term "Vangla" is derived from Bodo (aborigines of Assam) words "Bang" and "la" which connote "wide plains."

In addition to the translations of these spiritual poems, she also presented the history of the language and the people so exquisitely, they deserve to be appreciated by the conscious people. The following are some parts taken from the book. Its culture is a distinctive composite to which Jains, Buddhists, Hindus, Vaisnavas and Muslims have all contributed. From time to time Bangladesh searches for its roots as if trying to put back the missing parts in its long history. In the search for these roots we must look at its poetry. Defining poetry and tradition In 1907 an Indian scholar, Haraprashad Sastri, working in the Royal Archive in Nepal discovered a palm-leaf manuscript of '

    History
The area which is now Bangladesh has a rich historical and cultural past, combining Dravidian, Indo-Aryan, Mongol/Mughul, Arab, Persian, Turkic, and West European cultures. Residents of Bangladesh, about 98% of whom are ethnic Bengali and speak Bangla, are called Bangladeshis. Urdu-speaking, non-Bengali Muslims of Indian origin, and various tribal groups, mostly in the Chittagong Hill Tracts, comprise the remainder. Most Bangladeshis (about 83%) are Muslims, but Hindus constitute a sizable (16%) minority. There are also a small number of Buddhists, Christians, and animists. English is spoken in urban areas, and among the educated. About 1200 AD, Muslim invaders, under Sufi influence, supplanted existing Hindu and Buddhist dynasties in Bengal. This incursion led to the conversion to Islam of most of the population in the eastern areas of Bengal, and created a sizable Muslim minority in the western areas of Bengal. Since then, Islam has played a crucial role in the region's history and politics. Bengal was absorbed into the Mughul Empire in the 16th century, and Dhaka, the seat of a nawab (the representative of the emperor), gained some importance as a provincial center. But, it remained remote and thus a difficult-to-govern regionespecially the section east of the Brahmaputra Riveroutside the mainstream of Mughul politics.
