Virtual Bangladesh : History : Overview
The area which is now Bangladesh has a rich historical and cultural past, the product of the repeated influx of varied peoples, bringing with them the Dravidian, Indo-Aryan, Mongol-Mughul, Arab, Persian, Turkic, and European cultures. About 1200 A.D., Muslim invaders under Sufi influence, supplanted Hindu and Buddhist dynasties, and converted most of the population of the eastern areas of Bengal to Islam. Since then, Islam has played a crucial role in the region's history and politics. In the 16th century, Bengal was absorbed into the Mughul Empire. Portuguese traders and missionaries reached Bengal in the latter part of the 15th century. They were followed by representatives of the Dutch, the French, and the British East India Companies. During the 18th and 19th centuries, especially after the defeat of the French in 1757, the British gradually extended their commercial contacts and administrative control beyond Calcutta into the remainder of Bengal and northwesterly up the Ganges River valley. In 1859, the British Crown replaced the East India Company, extending British dominion from Bengal in the east to the Indus River in the west. In the late 19th and early 20th centuries, Muslim and Hindu leaders began to press for a greater degree of independence. At the movement's forefront was the largely Hindu Indian National Congress. Growing concern about Hindu domination of the movement led Muslim leaders to form the All-India Muslim League in 1906. In 1913, the League formally adopted the same goal as the Indian National Congress: self-government for India within the British Empire. The Congress and the League were unable, however, to agree on a formula to ensure the protection of Muslim religious, economic, and political rights. Over the next 2 decades, mounting tension between Hindus and Muslims led to a series of bitter intercommunal conflicts.

"Bangladesh has a hundred gates open for entrance but not one for departure" -Bernier. Bangladesh is a new state in an ancient land. It has been described by an American political scientist as "a country challenged by contradictions". On the face of it, the recent twists and turns of her history are often inconsistent. It is neither a distinct geographical entity, nor a well-defined historical unit. Nevertheless, it is the homeland of the ninth largest nation in the world whose gropings for a political identity were protracted, intense and agonizing. The key to these apparent contradictions lies in her history. Etymologically, the word Bangladesh is derived from the cognate "Vanga" which was first mentioned in the Hindu scripture Aitareya Aranyaka (composed between 500 B C and 500 A D). Legend has it that Bengal was first colonized by Prince Vanga, the son of King Bali and Queen Sudeshna of the Lunar dynasty. According to linguists, the roots of the term Vanga may be traced to languages in the adjoining areas. One school of linguists maintain that the word "Vanga" is derived from the Tibetan word "Bans" which implies "wet and moist". According to this interpretation, Bangladesh literally refers to a wetland. Another school is of the opinion that the term "Vangla" is derived from Bodo (aborigines of Assam) words "Bang" and "la" which connote "wide plains."

Country Info Bangladesh Introduction Bangladesh General Data Bangladesh Maps Bangladesh Culture ... Bangladesh Time and Date Bangladesh History Back to Top The people of East Pakistan Province declared their independence as the nation of Bangladesh on March 26, 1971, while fighting a savage war against the central Pakistani government. The fiscal separation from Pakistan took place, with extensive aid from India, on December 16, 1971. Bangladesh was soon recognized by most other nations, although Pakistan withheld diplomatic recognition until 1974 and China did not recognize the nation until 1976. Bangladesh was admitted to the United Nations in 1974. As Mughal authority declined, the Suba, or Dominion, of Bengal—including Bihar and Orissa—became semi-independent. The threat to the Muslim rulers of the Suba came first from the east from Arakanese pirates and Portuguese raiders, and in 1608 the capital was moved from Rajmahal to Dhaka. When further invasion threatened from central India from the rising power of the Maratha kingdom, the capital was shifted to Murshidabad in 1704. It was during this period that the English East India Company established its base at Calcutta. From 1757 the British were the dominant political power in Bengal. independence, Suhrawardy lingered in Calcutta, and Nazimuddin became chief minister of East Pakistan. From the beginning, the link between the two parts of Pakistan was tenuous; indeed, their only common interest was fear of Indian domination. Jinnah and his advisers believed that unification might be achieved through a common language, Urdu, which was used in the army and administration. The Bengalis perceived this as a threat. Their other major grievance was that their export products, jute and tea, provided most of Pakistan's foreign exchange; yet the central government mainly stimulated development in the West.

From the 13th century A.D. the Buddhists and Hindus were swamped by the flood of Muslim conquerors and the tide of Islam up to 18th century. Sometimes there were independent rulers like the Hussain Shahi and Ilyas Shahi dynasties, while at other times they ruled on behalf of the Imperial seat of Delhi.
From the 15th century, the Europeans, namely Portuguese, Dutch, French and British traders exerted an economic influence over the region. British political rule over the region began in 1757 A.D., when the last Muslim ruler of Bengal was defeated at Palassey. In 1947 the subcontinent was partitioned into India and Pakistan. Present Bangladesh became the Eastern Wing of the then Pakistan. But the movement for autonomy of East Pakistan started within a couple of years because of language and cultural differences and economic disparity between the two wings.

    http://www.basebangladesh.com/target/history.html
History BaSE was founded in 1992 to coordinate the handicraft activity present in the area gravitating on Khulna (South West of Bangladesh).
In doing so BaSE provides a chance to the groups which are out of the main stream of help.
From 1972 to 1977 Handicrafts Activities started in various villages of Bangladesh with the help and cooperation of different Organisations present in Bangladesh.
For the South West area the main problem was the very difficult communication with the Capital, where the coordinating NGO's had their head-offices.
In 1977 a few groups of our area managed to get in touch with some Buyer Organisation (mainly European).
One of these groups (Bhabarpara Pat Kutir Shilpo), organised as Registered Cooperative Society, obtained the Export Permit and started exporting directly through the nearby Port of Mongla.
In 1978 a commettee was formed, to coordinate the activity of all the groups present on the area and to share the export facilities. A few of the Buyers came to visit us and started sending us joint orders of handicrafts, which were exported using the Export Permit of Bhabarpara Pat Kutir Shilpo.
Around 1985, our main Buyer at the time (Sir John Ltd.) suggested that we organise in a proper way and he offered to bear the expenses for a printed Catalogue which would include the material of all the producer groups involved. To collect all the photos and prepare a detailed price list took us more time than expected, also because of the constant increase of the number of producers' groups to whom the cooperation was extended. But this was the step that brought us to become BaSE. Joint orders of handicrafts were coming from the buyers, compelling us to organise ourselves in a stable way.

A Lesson for Yugoslavia In Bangladesh's History
By Philip Bowring International Herald Tribune DHAKA - The Indian Subcontinent offers some important lessons for Yugoslavia. It is a pity that India, with almost characteristic hypocrisy, has been so quick to criticize the NATO action as interference in the internal affairs of a sovereign state. The Delhi statement sounded odd here last week when Bangladesh was celebrating the anniversary of its independence. The final success of Bangladesh's war of liberation from Pakistan, achieved in December 1971, was due to India's massive and direct military intervention in support of the secessionist movement. The creation of Bangladesh - now the world's eighth most populous nation - was by far the largest incidence since 1945 of one state participating with military force in the dismemberment of another. It created a precedent that is worth examining. India's motives in 1971 were certainly not entirely idealistic. It had every interest in the dismemberment of its main enemy, Pakistan, and the creation on India's eastern border of a state that was weak and in India's debt.

    History of Bangladesh
Bangladesh was once part of the Indian state of Bengal. East and West Bengal together was called Greater Bengal. In 1947, India became independent and a new country was created from the two parts called Pakistan where Muslims were in the majority. East Pakistan actually was East Bengal which is now Bangladesh. After a brief period of conflict with Pakistan, Bangladesh came into existence on 16th December1971.

In Bangladesh about 35% adults are litereate. Poor families cannot afford to let their children go to school so instead they work. Although primary schools are free, only about 80% of eligible pupils attend them. Only 25% of them will complete five years of basic education. After having completed basic or primary education pupils start class 6 at high school and get their Secondary School Certificate after they have studied another 4 years.

    http://www.chetona.com/bangladesh/html/history.asp
Medieval European geographers located paradise at the mouth of the Ganges and although this was overhopeful, Bengal was probably the wealthiest part of the subcontinent up until the 16th century. The area's early history featured a succession of Indian empires, internal squabbling, and a tussle between Hinduism and Buddhism for dominance. All of this was just a prelude to the unstoppable tide of Islam which washed over northern India at the end of the 12th century. Mohammed Bakhtiar, from Turkistan, captured Bengal in 1199 with only 20 men thanks to an unexplained `bold and clever strategy'. Under the Moghul viceroys, art and literature flourished, overland trade expanded and Bengal was opened to world maritime trade - the latter marking the death knell of Moghul power as Europeans began to establish themselves in the region. The Portuguese arrived as early as the 15th century but were ousted in 1633 by local opposition. The East India Company negotiated terms to establish a fortified trading post in Calcutta in 1690. The decline of Moghul power led to greater provincial autonomy, heralding the rise of the independent dynasty of the nawabs of Bengal. Humble East India Company clerk Robert Clive ended up effectively ruling Bengal when one of the impetuous nawabs attacked the thriving British enclave in Calcutta and stuffed those unlucky enough not to escape in an underground cellar. Clive retook Calcutta a year later and the British Government replaced the East India Company following the Indian Mutiny in 1857.
