Elfs like to help in the garden, helping to grow plants and food. Did you know that most of the food we eat grows on plants? Do you like bananas, apples, carrots, beans? They all grow on plants. Lady bugs are our friends and they help in the garden too! I'm sure your garden has some food plants! Do you know which plants in your garden are food plants? You might have to ask your mum or dad to show you the herbs, fruits and vegetables that grow there.
Do you know what a plant needs to grow big and strong? 1/. Plants need water , but some plants don't like too much water, just sometimes when they want a drink. Most young plants need water every day to grow strong and healthy. 2/. Plants like the

Food Safety for Mothers and Babies
Expectant mothers and those preparing food for them should be especially diligent when following safe food handling recommendations. Any illness a pregnant woman contracts can affect her unborn child, whose immune system is too immature to fight back. FOOD SAFETY TIPS
  • Do not eat raw or undercooked eggs and any food containing them such as Caesar salad, mousse, some custards, homemade ice cream and homemade mayonnaise. Do not drink raw or unpasteurized milk or foods made from raw milk. Do not eat soft cheeses such as feta, Brie, Camembert, blue and Mexican-style soft white types such as queso blanco and queso fresco. Avoid food from deli counters and thoroughly reheat lunchmeats and hot dogs. Make sure food is thoroughly cooked. Before eating stuffing cooked inside whole poultry, be sure it has reached 165 °F.
LISTERIA MONOCYTOGENES These foodborne bacteria can cause miscarriage and illness in newborns. Listeria has been found in unpasteurized milk, imported soft cheese, hot dogs, lunchmeats and spreads. To control listeria, refrigerate any food marked "refrigerate." Do not buy or use foods that are past their "use-by" dates. Do not keep sealed, unopened lunchmeats or spreads more than two weeks after you buy them and use or discard open packages. METHYLMERCURY IN FISH Seafood can be an important part of a balanced diet for pregnant women. It is a good source of high quality protein and other nutrients and is low in fat. However, the Food and Drug Administration and some health care providers recommend that pregnant women and small children avoid eating large fish that can possibly contain high levels of methylmercury (shark, swordfish, king mackerel and tilefish). Limit freshwater fish caught by family and friends to one meal (six ounces for an adult, two ounces for a young child) a week of cooked fish, or 12 ounces for an adult per week of any fish purchased from stores and restaurants. Methylmercury can harm an unborn child's or a young child's developing nervous system if eaten regularly. Always follow the advice of your doctor or health care provider.

Feeding Your Baby Whole Foods
by Cynthia Lair Americans fork over $1.25 billion every year buying commercially prepared baby food. Manufacturers of baby food encourage parents to think that their products have special properties that make them appropriate for infants. Millions of advertising dollars are spent perpetuating this myth. It is simply not true. Have you checked out the taste, texture, look, and smell of commercial baby cereal? Pour some commercial rice cereal in a bowl. What does it look like? It has no smell. The taste is the definitive of bland. The cereal is made from refined rice that has been processed and pre-cooked. Refined grains have nothing to offer but carbohydrates. Whole grains, on the other hand, contain protein, carbohydrates, fat, fiber, vitamins, minerals and LIFE. The germ is still intact. If you put a whole grain in water, it sprouts! If you put commercial baby cereal in water, it makes paste. Nutritionally-inferior, refined foods contribute to many of today's health problems, including obesity. Why train your baby to want it? By pre-toasting organic whole grains, grinding them in a small electric grinder, and cooking the grains with water, you can create a fresh, delicious, nutrient-dense cereal with taste, texture, and aroma that everyone in the family can grow on. Does your baby deserve organic food? What may be tolerated by a mature adult may prove harsh to the immature system of an infant. In the 1988, "Pesticides in the Diets of Infants and Children," a published report by the National Research Council, concern was raised about the protection of our infants and children. Current regulatory practices used to control pesticides in foods are based on studies of pesticide exposure to the general population, without regard to the special needs of infants. Yet, only one company produces organic baby food, Earth's Best, which was recently bought out by Gerber.

Baby Food Jar Garden
This is a really great project for kids that are in preschool all the way through elementary school. Homemade play dough is the best for this because it dries a lot faster than the kind you can buy in stores, plus it's cheaper. You can let the kids choose what color of dough they want on the bottom by dividing the batch.
Parental supervision is recommended.
This project is VERY EASY to do.
What You Need
  • Baby food jar with lid Small dried or silk flowers Rolling pin Craft or hot glue Homemade (or store bought) play dough
Play Dough Recipe
  • 1 cup Flour 2 teaspoons Cream of tartar 1/4 cup Salt 1 cup warm Water 1 teaspoon Oil Food coloring
How To Make It Play dough - Mix all ingredients, adding food coloring last. Stir over medium heat until blended smooth. Place in plastic bag or airtight container when cooled.
Making the Garden Roll out play dough with a rolling pin. Use the mouth of the jar as a cookie cutter (if you use the lid, you can't close the jar). Hot glue (adults only) the play dough into the lid and wait about 10 seconds. Have the kids stick flowers into the dough. Leave lids on a cookie sheet to dry over night.

Cheating Babies: Nutritional Quality
and Cost of Commercial Baby Food
Daryth D. Stallone, Ph.D., M.P.H. Michael F. Jacobson, Ph.D.
Executive Summary
Conclusions and Recommendations
Parents expect baby foods to be just as nutritious as possibleto live up to Heinz' slogan "Only the best ingredients for the best nutrition." This report was intended to inform parents about nutritional differences among types and brands of commercial baby foods and to discourage them from paying high prices for baby food. While our study indicates that some baby foods are diluted, they do not appear to endanger the health of infants, inasmuch as most of infants' nutrition comes from breast milk, formula, or cow's milk.
I. Major Findings
Gerber and Heinz replace real food with water and thickening agents in many of their products for children over six months of age. Such adulterated products are nutritionally inferior to products made with more fruits and vegetables. Makers of baby food encourage a mystique about their products. They want parents to think that commercial baby foods have special properties that make them particularly appropriate, if not essential, for infants. Advertising campaigns promote the myth that commercial products are especially good at meeting the nutritional and developmental needs of infants. Gerber's public relations and advertising machinery has cultivated an almost sacred image in people's minds of Gerber products. Those perceptions are clearly untrue. Parents, armed with a food processor, blender, or mashing fork, can easily prepare safe, nutritious, and economical food for their infants at home. Of course, many commercial products are nutritious and do fill a need when convenience is desired.

Host Plants
Butterfly gardening involves planning your garden to attract, retain, and encourage butterfly populations. A sample garden plan is shown in Figure 1, and a list of host plants is given in Table 3 and Table 4 . Flowers of similar colors grouped together are more attractive to both butterflies and the gardener. You should select a variety of nectar-producing plants with the aim of providing flowers in bloom throughout the season. This will entice a continuous succession of new visitors to a yard. It is especially important to have flowers in mid to late summer, when most butterflies are active. Flowers with multiple florets that produce abundant nectar are ideal. Annuals are wonderful butterfly plants because they bloom continuously through the season, providing a steady supply of nectar. Perennial plants, such as coneflowers, lilac, butterfly weed, and asters, are visited regularly by butterflies. Most plants in the mint family are also good nectar sources for butterflies. Avoid double flowers because they are often bred for showiness, not nectar production. For successful butterfly gardening, you need to provide food for more than the adult butterflies. You need to provide for their caterpillar forms as well. Butterfly caterpillars have a limited host range (See

An Urban Eden: transforming hopeless backyard hardpan into a lush organic plot
A story about City Farmer's Demonstration Food Garden
Originally published in Harrowsmith Magazine
April/May 1984 Number 54

It is little more than a stone's throw from downtown, a means of measure quite appropriate for the volunteers digging, weeding and discarding rocks from the painstakingly created soil that covers the sunny backyard of the Vancouver Energy Information Centre. Here, beautifully illustrated signs identify plants and techniques for gardeners who pass by a cold frame, a large so-lar greenhouse, a three-bin composting system and 30 raised beds filled with healthy vegetables. Occasionally, a train clangs by almost close enough to touch, overwhelming all the other city sounds and reminding the gardeners that not long ago, this little chunk of Eden was not much better suited to growing food than the railway siding next to it. The garden began to take shape on a warm fall Sunday in 1981, when 11 people met in the backyard of the newly opened centre at Maple Street and Sixth Avenue, overlooking the Burrard Bridge, which spans False Creek and leads to downtown Vancouver. Their spirits high, the volunteers marked the proposed boundaries of the beds and then lunged at the earth with their garden tools like so many horticultural break dancers. After 10 minutes, only one sturdy soul with a pickaxe was left chipping at the cement-like ground. A chemical smell brought the rest of the dejected gardeners to their knees. Was it machine oil, paint thinner or something worse? No one could be sure. Neighbours said that the previous tenants had fixed their trucks in the yard and dumped waste liquids there.
