When I was in kindergarten, my class held a Mother's Day tea and made them all a little garden". This is a really great project for kids that are in preschool all the way through elementary school. Homemade play dough is the best for this because it dries a lot faster than the kind you can buy in stores, plus it's cheaper. You can let the kids choose what color of dough they want on the bottom by dividing the batch. Parental supervision is recommended. This project is rated VERY EASY to do. What You Need
  • Baby food jar with lid
  • Small dried or silk flowers
  • Rolling pin
  • Craft or hot glue
  • Homemade (or store bought) play dough
Play dough recipe:
  • 1 cup Flour
  • 2 teaspoons Cream of tartar
  • 1/4 cup Salt
  • 1 cup warm Water
  • 1 teaspoon Oil
  • Food coloring

How To Make It
  • Play dough - Mix all ingredients, adding food coloring last. Stir over medium heat until blended smooth. Place in plastic bag or airtight container when cooled.

    Peas and Baby Food
It all began back in the summer of 1927 in the kitchen of Daniel and Dorothy Gerber. After growing tired of straining peas by hand, Mrs. Gerber suggested that her husband take some peas to the family business Fremont Canning Company where they produced a line of canned fruit and vegetables. Experiments with strained foods followed, and by late 1928, baby food was ready for the national market. The rest, as they say, is history.
The cute little baby on the Gerber food jars was only a preliminary charcoal sketch originally, but the powers that be at the company thought the little tyke was so adorable they decided to keep it permanently. To this day, that baby is one of the most recognizable trademarks in marketing history.

    Making Air Fresheners
TIPical Mary Ellen : Episode TIP-418

Create an air freshener by mixing gelatin, food coloring and essential oils. Pour the mixture into clean baby food jars and let cool. The jars also make great gifts.
TIPical Mary Ellen host Mary Ellen Pinkham shows how to make potpourri, air freshener and scented rocks.
    • Freshen up the air in the kitchen by adding a few teaspoons of sugar and cinnamon to an empty pie tin and slowly burn over the stove. The kitchen will smell like the cook has been baking all day.
    • Make the whole home smell great by filling a small saucepan with water and heating to a low simmer on the stove. Once heated, add cinnamon, cloves, vanilla and orange peels.
    • For a natural carpet freshener, mix three parts baking soda with one part lavender and one part rosemary leaves. Sprinkle on the carpet and let it sit for about a half an hour before vacuuming. Another option is to add potpourri to the vacuum-cleaner bag to freshen a room each time it is vacuumed.

Hot glue (adults only) the play dough into the lid and wait about 10 seconds. Have the kids stick flowers into the dough. Leave lids on a cookie sheet to dry over night. When the play dough is dry, screw on the lid carefully. You can write a name on the jar with glitter or decorate any way you want.

You spot them occasionally in garden catalogs or at your local garden center, but the best gadgets are the nifty homemade widgets that your friends have devised.

Here is a small sampling from this book, of how to make some nifty gizmos! Here are some tips to help your birds using old door mats, and cracked old concrete birdbaths; cool lantern delights for outdoor lighting, using baby food jars; a string holder, and more!
