Main Cities in Austria Austria's main cities of interest are Graz Innsbruck Salzburg and Vienna For other places of interest, see Austrian Regions Graz Graz is the largest city in Steiermark and often overlooked by visitors to Austria. The region is south of Vienna and a gateway to Slovenia and the Lake Balaton area of Hungary The old town of Graz is built around the Schlossberg Park on the west bank of the river Mur, and connected to the new town on the east bank by seven bridges. An early Roman settlement is thought to be beneath Graz. A castle was built here in the 11th-century, there is a 13th-century church of the Teutonic Knights, and the 15th-century Gothic Cathedral of St Aegidius. A 16th-century parish church has an altarpiece by the Venetian artist Tintoretto. Graz was also a residence of the Holy Roman Emperors in the 15th century, and occupied by the French during the Napoleonic Wars.

April 20, 2001
Serbian Culture Minister Branislav Lecic
Belgrade, April 19 (Tanjug) - Serbian Culture Minister Branislav Lecic opened Thursday evening " Days of Viennese culture in Belgrade", which started by the opening of the Austrian Library in one of the several buildings belonging to the Medical School of the University of Belgrade in Deligradska Street. During the festivity, Vienna and Austrian culture will be presented in a series of cultural events by May 5. " After great efforts of Serbian people to enter the field of peace and democracy we now have an opportunity to participate in a new age when Serbia builds brick by brick its democratic edifice", Lecic said. " Culture is nothing else but exchange and contact with other peoples and nations. We have been imprisoned for too long and therefore I, as Culture Minister, don' t want that claustrophobia time to happen to my people ever again ," he said. Secretary General of the Austrian Foreign Ministry Albert Rohan said that October 5 of the last year was good day for Serbia and Europe, because on that day Serbian people put an end to Milosevic's rule peacefully.

CALL FOR PAPERS Baupläne für Zwischenräume / Blueprints for No-Man's Land Connections in Contemporary Austrian Culture University of Aberdeen, 14-17 September 2000 Künstlerische Forschung und Experiment sind ... ebenso wichtig wie die Produktion von Kunst (Peter Weibl) This interdisciplinary conference will investigate the connections between different forms of cultural production and representation in present-day Austria. It has two interrelated aims: first, to facilitate interaction between theorists and practitioners with an interest in contemporary Austrian culture and second, to explore areas of overlap between various forms of cultural representation in contemporary Austrian culture. The conference will be accompanied by literary readings, an art exhibition, and a theatre performance. These 'accompanying events' will form an integral part of the conference, while also presenting aspects of Austrian culture to a wider non-academic audience. Among those who have expressed an interest in contributing are Manfred Erjautz, Veronika Dreier, Theater im Bahnhof (Graz). Utilising as a central motif a model of the cultural sphere as city, divided into distinct, but overlapping areas through which theorists and practitioners circulate, we are seeking papers which explore the nature of the 'Zwischenräume' between different forms of representation. Papers should address the connections (historical, existing, potential and missed) between various cultural spheres such as: * literature * art * architecture * music * film * theatre and cabaret In each case, we are interested in both 'high' and 'low' culture, as well as in works which subvert this distinction.
