A speech to the Moving Towards the Knowledge Economy Conference
By Mr Peter O'Byrne, Managing Director, Austrade
Sydney, 12 November 2002 Ladies and gentlemen It is encouraging to see the success Margaret Ryan and her team have achieved with this initiative.
  • Why this goal is relevant to the knowledge economy; And how knowledge companies can break down the barriers to exporting and the benefits of going international.
International business also provides a range of benefits beyond economics, including improved working conditions, opportunities for regional development, and a more open outlook to the rest of the world. Our research shows companies involved in export, on average, pay higher wages, and provide more permanent jobs. Yet there is evidence of potential to substantially expand our exporter base.

Australian Industry Group / PricewaterhouseCoopers Survey of Australian Manufacturing - December quarter 2002
The Australian Industry Group/PricewaterhouseCoopers Survey of Australian Manufacturing for the December quarter 2002 shows a strengthening in manufacturing activity, despite the impact of the drought, weaker exports, labour shortages and cost pressures.
After seasonal adjustment a net balance of +24% of firms reported increased production in the December quarter 2002, a rise from +22% in the September quarter 2002. This is the highest December quarter production result since 1994.
Twelve sectors reported production gains, with seven strengthening over the quarter. The strongest sectors were in construction related activities - wood, wood products and furniture; construction material products and fabricated metal products - with around 65% of firms reporting increased production. Improving commercial activity was identified as a key factor in growth.
The strengthening in activity was mainly confined to large firms, with small to medium firms reporting a significant easing in growth. The percentage of firms reporting a rise in production fell from 53% to 42% for medium sized firms, and from 46% to 28% for small firms.
