A sian American Media in the Last Decade A Lecture by Mr. Daryl Chin October 11, 2002 [Photo by Ana Lai] Daryl Chin's lecture attracted many students despite the poor weather Originally, the main focus of the lecture would be on Asian-American Media in the Last Decade, but after careful reconsideration, it was pushed back to 1987, the year the Asian American International Film Festival celebrated its 10 th anniversary. Deemed the Asian American version of Brats, it was a year when many young generation filmmakers and video artists straight out of film school came into public prominence, a succession of both media literate and media conscious individuals.

9. Anagram Volume 1 / What Is An Asian American? / Gerry Tsai
The tyranny of the checkin boxes and the over-active American media have createdan asian-american identity of their own invention and satisfaction.
http://www.jhu.edu/~anagram/vols/vol2/asianam.html
What is an Asian American? Gerry Tsai Questions of ethnic identity never provide clean and easy answers. The boundaries and barriers that seem to divide people are always blurry and unclear around the edges. America has become a nation of check-in boxes, a country where everyone is placed into a category no matter how poorly they fit, or how poor the category. The term "Asian-American" first came into use around the mid 1960's when the ever increasing number of Chinese-American and Japanese-American college students joined in with the civil rights movement of the era. It was not until the mid 1980's, however, that "Asian-American" because a mainstream term to replace "Oriental" or the even more pejorative "chink." However, the term "Asian-American" has grown past its original context and has become a category so large that it is increasingly difficult to define. The original concept of Asian-America is dated and full of holes. As identities grow and mature, so must the concepts that surround them.

In Search of Asian American Cinema (Race in Contemporary American Cinema, part 3)
    by Peter Feng Cineaste v21, n1-2 (Wntr-Spring, 1995):32 (4 pages).
Cineaste Publishers Inc. Used in the UCB Media Resources Web site with permission. What is Asian American Cinema, anyway?" The question came from a colleague in the discussion group that had formed to discuss a film and video series I had programmed for the Institute for Cinema and Culture at the University of Iowa, and the question was directed at me. "What are you going to say in your article," asked the filmmakers who knew I was attempting to answer this question. "How are you defining Asian American Cinema?," asked my friends on other campuses, themselves struggling to answer the same question. "I don't know," I replied. "The only thing I do know is that my students are helping me to redefine 'Asian American Cinema' every week, and I'm sure that any answer I give today I will abandon before the end of the semester." The term 'Asian American Cinema,' which includes works in video and film, implies first of all that there is such a thing as Asian American Culture. But is there such a thing as a unified Asian American Culture? Of course, the term culture is itself a slippery one - is there such a thing as American Culture, for example? Europeans might say yes; many Americans, especially people of color, would say no.

    Asian Americans in the Media
The first appearance of Asian Americans in films took place during the first half of the 1900s. In the early periods, most of the Asian characters were played by Caucasian actors. Moreover, the stereotypical images of Asian Americans in the films have been undergoing a slow improvement. Asian American directors, actors and producers in the film industry today are trying to continue the tradition as well as to add in some contemporary elements into their productions. This bibliography provides Internet websites, books and videos about or produced by Asian Americans. Videos, which are all documentary films produced in the 1990s, cover topics on history, social issues and personal stories among various Asian American groups. While the reference books provide information about Asian American actors in the early film history, the Internet websites focus more on actors in the recent decades.
