    Lisa Madigan for Attorney General
(Chicago) Hundreds of Asian-Americans from around the Chicago area came together today at Furama Restaurant on Chicago's north side to rally in support of the candidacy of State Sen. Lisa Madigan in the Democratic primary race for Illinois Attorney General. Many of Chicago's Asian-Americans have been working very closely with Sen. Madigan for years, as her district includes significant parts of Asian-American neighborhoods on the city's north side, and through her community work in the Uptown neighborhood. "As a resident of Uptown for several years, I've had the opportunity to work with Lisa Madigan," said Chinese and Vietnamese American leader San O. "She is truly committed to protecting our families. And she'll be a great Attorney General for our community because she's been standing with us, working by our side, so she knows our need and concerns." Rangit Ganguly of the Indian-American community added, "Sen. Madigan has been a good friend to the Indian-American community and has always been very approachable and compassionate. Because she is in touch with us and our community, we know she will do a great job as the People's lawyer."

General Services Our Office provides a variety of services for Asian/Asian American students. Generally our office advises and counsels individual students, makes referrals for individual students, advises student organizations, advocates for students and the community, and develops networks for students. Individual counseling and advising
Students may come into the Office and receive general counsel and advice on a variety of issues ranging from academics to extra-curricular activities to professional development to personal life. The basis of individual counseling and advising is that the student should feel more at ease with speaking with the Office staff due to the similar racial/cultural heritage of both parties. Referrals
After general counseling and advising students may receive a referral to another department, office, or service on campus that is more qualified or knowledgeable to assist the student further with his or her inquiry or issue. Once a referral is suggested the student can either set-up his or her own appointment or the Office staff can set-up the appointment for the student. Study groups
Students have the opportunity to study with their classmates in informal study group sessions on weekday evenings in the Multicultural Center conference room. There are study group sessions for popular courses including those in biology, chemistry, physics, mathematics, economics, psychology, and sociology. NOTE: These sessions are not tutoring sessions with teaching assistants present; rather these sessions are opportunities for students to learn from and study with each other.

University of California, Los Angeles Asian AmericanStudies Center Reading Room 3230 Campbell Hall Los Angeles, CA 900241546.
    http://www.cetel.org/discover.html
Discover Your Ancestors We hope that ANCESTORS IN THE AMERICAS will inspire you to learn more about your Asian American family history and genealogy, and to preserve and pass on what you know or find. Why did your family come here? What and who did they leave behind? What was it like for them as the first generation? It is important that we learn our own stories and pass them on from generation to generation. Our stories, particularly of the early years in America, are largely unknown and untold. They need to be preserved so that we do not forget our roots and early struggles, and so that our history as Asian Americans becomes understood as a natural part of the history of America. Here are some ways to begin:
    • YOUR FAMILY.
The best place to start in discovering your own ancestors is your family itself. Begin by asking your elders the names of your ancestors or stories from the past. You might even want to do an oral history of your family, recorded on audio or videotape. This can provide the essential beginnings to go even further back in time. To trace your family back to your country of origin, you will need a complete name of an immigrant relative and their place of origin. It also helps to have a date of a significant event in the relatives life in the old country, such as a wedding.

    • Many resources are available on the World Wide Web, including others who already may be doing research of use to you. However, you cannot actually do extensive genealogical research on the Web yet. Older records are usually handwritten on paper, and may exist on microfilm, but not yet in electronic format. The Web can be a place to link up with others doing genealogical research and share your questions and experiences. There are usenet groups on genealogy by region of the world (soc.genealogy), though none to date on Asia (Anyone want to start one? If you do
