Whistler turned to lithography after he had already established himself as a painter and etcher, and the poetic landscapes and portraits he produced in this last medium are the most spontaneous and intimate expression of his art. "The Lithographs of James McNeill Whistler" from the Collection of Steven Block will be on display January 16 through February 27, 2002. Whistler was an American-born painter and graphic artist, active mainly in England. He created flawless harmonies of tone and color in his paintings, and was equally skilled as a decorative artist, creating the Peacock Room for the London home of the Liverpool shipping magnate Frederick Leyland (now reconstructed in the Freer Gallery, Washington, D.C.), with decorative patterning that anticipated the Art Nouveau style. Whistler's training as an artist began indirectly when, after his discharge from West Point Military Academy for "deficiency in chemistry," he learned etching as a U.S. navy cartographer. In 1855 be went to Paris to study art, and settled in London in 1859. Whistler soon made a name for himself through his talent and flamboyant personality. He was famous for his wit and dandyism, and loved controversy; his book

"If familiarity can breed contempt, certainly Artor what is currently taken for ithas been brought to its lowest stage of intimacy.
The people have been harassed with Art in every guise, and vexed with many methods as to its endurance. They have been told how they shall love Art, and live with it. Their homes have been invaded, their walls covered with paper, their very dress taken to taskuntil, roused at last, bewildered and filled with the doubts and discomforts of senseless suggestion, they resent such intrustion, and cast forth the false prophets, who have brought the very name of the beautiful into disrepute, and derision upon themselves.

Biography
James A. McNeill Whistler, was born in Lowell, Massachusetts on 11 July, 1834 to Major George Washington Whistler and Anna Matilda McNeill. Although he had employment as an etcher for the US Coast Survey, Whistler moved to Europe in 1855 to pursue a career in the arts. He spent most of his life in London, while making many trips to Paris, France. He painted as a Symbolist, as opposed to his contemporaries, the Impressionists. He had a strong preference for decorative effects, and his work could be considered a precursor to the Art Nouveau. Whistler believed Modern Art should be a homage to beauty. Whistler died on the 17 July, 1903, in London. Born on 8 January, 1836, in Dronrijp, Denmark, Sir Lawrence Alma-Tadema was an accomplished artist. His father was Pieter Jiltes Tadema, and his mother, Hinke Dirks Brouwer. At a young age, Alma-Tadema was accepted to study art at Antwerp Academy, and by the age of thirty, he was an established painter of ancient and medieval history. In 1870, Alma-Tadema moved to London, where he continued to paint scenes from Roman life. By the 1890s, Alma-Tadema had become a naturalized British citizen and a member of the Royal Academy. Alma-Tadema died in 1912, on the eve of WWI, and his reputation all but disappeared.
