Introduction
This directory of botanic gardens and arboreta started life as a simple list of telephone and fax numbers on my home computer, with data added from the International Directory of Botanic Gardens (1990), edited by Christine and Vernon Heywood and Peter Wyse Jackson. I then supplemented Heywood's list with those on several address lists held at the Australian National Botanic Gardens (ANBG), most significantly the Australian Network for Plant Conservation (ANPC). The majority of fax numbers were initially obtained by systematically telephoning the institutions for which we had telephone numbers, and other information was gleaned from combing through a range of leaflets and guide-books. A draft version was produced on the photocopier in April 1992 and mailed out to all those institutions listed. A final version of the Directory was published in August 1992 and distributed to all those institutions listed.

By Walking:
From the Visitors Center on 3rd Street just south of Chestnut Street, it's an easy five block walk to the Museum. Walk a half block south to Walnut Street, turn left to 2nd Street and past Olde Original Bookbinder's Restaurant to Front Street, then straight ahead over the pedestrian bridge crossing highway I-95. You will see the Delaware River ahead and the Museum on your right as you walk down the steps (there is an elevator if needed).
By Car:
Take I-95 (from North or South) to exit #20 (formerly exit #16) marked variously: Historic Area, Penn's Landing, Columbus Blvd, Washington Ave. At the traffic light turn left onto Columbus Blvd (aka Delaware Ave.). Pass the Hyatt Regency Philadelphia at Penn's Landing on your right; the next building is the Museum. At the traffic light notice the Walnut Street Pedestrian Bridge overpass ahead. Turn right into the Museum just before the bridge. The circular driveway leads to the entrance to the Penn's Landing Parking Lot.
