Welcome to the Animal Welfare section of the Defra website. Like many of you looking at this site, we recognise that animals are sentient beings - not merely commodities. It follows that the standards of animal welfare we apply are very important. The following pages are a guide to what Defra is doing to ensure priority is given to these standards for welfare of animals on-farm, during transport, at markets and at slaughter. Details of Government Responses to Farm Animal Welfare Council (FAWC) reports are also available. The independent advisory body FAWC, which provides advice for Ministers on these issues, can be found at www.fawc.org.uk Defra is also responsible for policy on general animal welfare, which covers the welfare of all domestic and captive animals. We are proposing an Animal Welfare Bill - Analysis of the Replies to the Public Consultation review of the scientific aspects and veterinary opinions relating to tail docking in dogs There are links to other areas in Defra and other Government Departments that have pages on issues related to Animal Welfare.
