But people do ask whether drinking a beer or two before exercise will hurt exercise performance. And even more frequently, clients have questions about whether drinking a little bit of alcohol may actually be heart-healthy. Thanks to an ever-growing body of research on the topic, we now have more answers to those questions, as well as more information on the problems related to alcohol abuse.

Alcohol and Your Health
Alcohol, or ethyl alcohol (ethanol), refers to the intoxicating ingredient found in wine, beer and hard liquor. Alcohol arises naturally from carbohydrates when certain micro-organisms metabolize them in the absence of oxygen, called fermentation. Beer, wine and other liquor contain different amounts of alcohol. The amount of alcohol in distilled liquor is known as “proof”. Proof refers to the amount of alcohol in the liquor; for example, 100 proof liquor contains 50% alcohol, 40 proof liquor contains 20% alcohol, and so on. Traditional wine has approximately 8-14% alcohol, while regular beer has 4-6% alcohol.

Alcohol And Your Health: It's A Question Of Balance
Your neighbor just bought a case of red wine. He says the red stuff is good for the heart. He saw it on TV. The fact is, it's the alcohol in beer, wine or distilled spirits that can have a protective effect against heart disease and stroke in older adults. It's not the color of type of beverage you drink. Your neighbor says that three drinks a day keeps the blood thin and the heart strong. The fact is, the protective effect of beverage alcohol can be achieved with as little as one drink every other day. And more than two drinks a day can increase your risk of health problems in the short-term and the long run. Your neighbor says....Hey, what does he know? If you choose to drink, you know there are benefits and risks.

Background
Although alcohol consumption has fallen since the late 1970s, Australians are still relatively high alcohol consumers. We spend over $400 each per year on alcoholic beverages. Sixty percent of us drink on at least one day per week and 10% of us drink daily. Approximately one third of young people between the ages of 14 and 19 consume at lease five drinks in one sitting, every two weeks.

One unit contains 8g or 10ml of alcohol and is equivalent to:
  • 1 single measure of spirits
  • 1 small glass of wine
  • 1 measure of fortified wine, e.g. port or whisky
Moderate alcohol consumption has in fact been shown to have a protective effect against coronary heart disease amongst men and women over 50 and post-menopausal women. However, studies have also shown that this amount can increase the concentration of steroid hormones in pre-menopausal women, which may increase their risk of breast cancer.

But I heard drinking was good for my health!
In 1991, the CBS news program 60 Minutes ran a story called "The French Paradox" which suggested that drinking alcohol, or at least red wine, reduced the risk of heart disease. Many people considered this a medical recommendation to drink. Epidemiological studies indicate that moderate drinkers live longer than non-drinkers and heavy drinkers. The reasons are not clear. In 2001, researchers at the Harvard School of Public Health and Brigham and Women’s Hospital have found that moderate alcohol consumption among people who have a specific version of a gene that metabolizes alcohol have a greater reduction in risk of heart disease and higher HDL (good cholesterol) levels ( read story ). In addition, other Harvard researchers found that people with heart disease who consume an average of 14 alcoholic drinks a week appear less likely to die from a heart attack than nondrinkers ( read story The Harvard scientists caution that heavy consumption of alcohol can lead to negative cardiovascular outcomes such as high blood pressure, heart attacks, and sudden cardiac death. Other doctors warn that even moderate drinking may raise the risks of colon and breast cancer, some types of stroke, fetal damage, driving accidents, abusive behavior, and criminal activities.

1. Regarding the text... 1) Aaron and his sons had just been consecrated for their duties. 2) Offerings, according to the instructions of God, are prepared and God consumes them to show His approval and to confirm the priesthood in the eyes of the people. 3) Two priests, Nadab and Abihu, then offered incense to God. They used “strange fire” and were devoured. 4) We then read some instruction that surely was given to help keep this tragedy from recurring. Read Lev. 10:8-11 5) I’m sure we’ve all read or seen something on the most recent studies about the effects of alcohol. (“One drink a day is good for you. Help you live longer.”) 6) But, is that all there is to it? Millions of consciences have been eased by these reports. 2. Science says its good for you. Does the Bible really say NO? Let’s look at the rest of the story.

Alcohol and Your Health
Recent studies suggest that alcohol in moderation can reduce your risk of heart disease and high cholesterol. But before prescribing an extra cocktail for health, take a look at the pros and cons of alcohol consumption.

Can You Benefit From Alcohol?
A Finnish study showed that life expectancy was slightly higher for men who drank some alcoholic beverages every week than for men who didn't drink at all. This effect disappeared in men who drank more than seven drinks a week. What could this mean? A little alcohol may be good for your health, but more than a little is not good. And there are more effective ways to achieve the same benefits:
  • Eat a varied diet that's rich in complex carbohydrates and low in saturated fat, salt and sugar.
  • Exercise regularly.
  • Manage the effects of stress.
  • Avoid recreational drugs.
What Are the Harmful Health Effects of Alcohol?
Alcohol is a toxic substance. Abuse or even mild overuse over a period of time can cause:
  • heart disease
  • high blood pressure
  • liver disease
  • impotence
  • nerve and brain damage
  • sleep problems
  • cancer
  • damage to the stomach and kidneys
In addition to these health problems, alcohol can cause behavior problems that can lead to loss of income, family and friends. Alcohol use is associated with a

High Blood Pressure
What it is and how to manage it
Hypertension is the medical term for high blood pressure. Blood pressure is the measure of the force of blood flowing against artery walls. A blood pressure reading involves two numbers. The first, the systolic, measures the pressure on your arteries when your heart beats and pushes blood through your circulatory system. The second, the diastolic, measures the pressure on your arteries between beats when your heart is resting. A normal blood pressure reading would be 120/80. A diastolic reading between 90 and 104 indicates mild hypertension. Moderate hypertension would have a diastolic reading between 105 and 114. A reading of more than 115 is considered severe hypertension.
Get Proper Treatment
There are simple ways to bring down your high blood pressure and keep it there. Treating even mild hypertension is considered beneficial. This is a relatively new concept, so if your doctor told you in the past that treating your mild high blood pressure was unnecessary, ask again.
Take Your Medication
High blood pressure can be lowered with medication, but it will rise again if you stop taking your prescription. Take your medication at the same time every day. Make it a part of your regular routine. If you miss a day, don't double up on a dose. Call your doctor for advice.

Alcohol and Your Health Of course, alcohol consumption can have many negative affects immediately on your physical health such as having a hang over or even alcohol poisoning, which is discussed in another area of this section. And there are other emotional consequences that can often be associated with consuming too much alcohol, such as making poor decisions and choices that can sometimes be life-changing. However, it is the continued use of alcohol over a period of time that is normally considered when discussing alcohol and health consequences. Studies have shown that alcohol increases the risk of a number of diseases.
  • AIDS and Sexually Transmitted Diseases

  • There's a definite connection between alcohol and AIDS. Remember, alcohol decreases judgment. You are prone to take risks when you are drunk that you would never consider – and with people you’d never consider – when you are sober. This same lack of judgment may also result in sexually transmitted diseases.
  • Ulcers

  • Alcohol can also cause stomach ulcers that lead to internal bleeding.
  • Alcohol Poisoning

  • Alcohol poisoning may occur if you drink too much, too fast.

We've heard about the potential health benefits of red wine, but two recent studies in the Journal of the American Medical Association suggest that a light-to-moderate intake of any kind of alcoholic beverage may be beneficial. In one analysis, more than 2200 Connecticut-based men and women over age 65 provided information as to how much alcohol they had consumed within the previous month. About half were non-drinkers. The alcohol drinkers were divided into light drinkers who usually consumed up to 1 to 1.5 drinks per day, and moderate drinkers, who consumed up to an average 1.5 to 4 drinks per day. (Heavier drinkers were excluded.) Researchers then kept track of the participants over the next 14 years, noting who in the group suffered from heart failure during that time. After taking into account factors that can affect heart healthage, gender, and a medical history of diabetes or high blood pressureresearchers found that both light and moderate drinkers were less likely than non-drinkers to suffer from heart failure.
