National Albanian American Council
Announces New Hope Fellows
Washington, DC, May 7, 2002 The National Albanian American Council (NAAC), funded by the United States Agency for International Development (USAID), is pleased to announce the selection of ten Kosovar women leaders to participate in the Hope Fellowship program. The Hope Fellows will present themselves and their commitment to the fellowship program in a "commitment ceremony" on Monday, May 13 from 18:00 to 20:00 at the Grand Hotel in Pristina. The media are invited to attend the ceremony. Dr. Ibrahim Rugova, President of Kosovo; Dr. Bajram Rexhepi, Prime Minister of Kosovo; Ambassador John Menzies, Chief of Mission, US Office Pristina; and Andrew Sisson, Acting Mission Director, USAID Kosovo, are expected to attend.
The third group of Hope Fellows will start its training in Washington, D.C. on May 20 and return to Kosovo on July 26. The women’s biographies follow below.
The Hope Fellowship program is designed to enhance the competence and confidence of women leaders in Kosovo. As Kosovars create a new government and economy, the inclusion of women in decision-making roles in government, politics, business, and civil society development is vital. The Fellowship experience is intended to intensify the Fellows’ self-development and professional capacity and solidify their lifetime commitment to work for the positive development of Kosovo.

This has often cut off Albania from the rest of the Balkans. The remainder, an alluvial plain, receives precipitation seasonally, is poorly drained, and is alternately arid or flooded. Much of the plain's soil is of poor quality. The largest Albanian River the Drin travels westward to the Adriatic.
CLIMATE: The Albanian climate varies greatly, with the Mediterranean coast having hot winters cool winters with low rainfall. Those in the mountains have lower temperatures and hight rainfall and snowfall. COUNTRY MAP

BASIC INFO. GEOGRAPHY GOVERNMENT ... ALBANIA Albanians are made up of two major subgroups: the Gegs, who generally occupy the area north of the Shkumbin River, and the Tosks, most of whom live south of the river. Ethnic Albanians are estimated to account for 90 percent of the population. The largest ethnic minority within Albania are Greek, who make up about 3% of the total population. The rest of the population is made up by Vlachs, Serbs, Gypsies, and Bulgarians. 38% of Albanians live in cities and towns. As of July 2001, the estimated population is 3,510,484. POPULATION GRAPH

Location
  • The three villages lie approximately 30 km from the Adriatic Sea and 60 km from the provincial capital Campobasso in the hilly Molisian countryside and (Acquaviva lies at 413 m above sea level) between the rivers Biferno and Trigno. They form a compact residential area.
They are surrounded by Italian-speaking municipalities, among which Palata, seat of the Comunità Montana Monte Mauro, to which Acquaviva also belongs, is particularly important for all research on language contact. For this reason a description of the Molisian-Italian dialect of Palata is also in the making at the Chair for Slavic Linguistics of the University of Constance.
Along with the provincial capital, the most important cities in the area are: Larino, the old seat of court, Termoli, port city and seat of the bishop, and the Abruzzian port and commercial city Vasto.
From a language-contact perspective, it is also noteworthy that several Albanian-speaking communities also exist in Molise. The closest one is Montecilfone, which lies directly on the border of Palata. We have planned to contrast the changes induced by contact in the Slavic and Albanian-speaking communities in Molise. A description of the verb system of Montecilfone has already been published.
