Agricultural Education is a program for high school and middle school students interested in pursuing careers in natural resources, environmental and agricultural careers. Hundreds of careers are available to students who complete this program. Each local program is designed and conducted to meet specific local needs as identified by that program's advisory committee, and the school administration. These programs include training for careers in agricultural production, processing, mechanization/engineering, communication/education, scientist, marketing/sales, horticulture, forestry, research, and agribusiness. The agricultural education program involves the following components: rigorous classroom instruction (contextual learning), hands-on experience and career exploration (work-based learning), and the FFA (connecting activity). Programs are designed to prepare students to fill community needs, enter post secondary agricultural programs, and develop their personal skills. Over 20% percent of America's work force is employed in some phase of the agricultural industry. Of the 20% involved in agriculture, only 8% are involved in production while 30% are involved in marketing, merchandising, and sales. Twenty-nine percent are scientists, engineers, and related professionals. With the increasing population world wide, greater demands will be made on the food and fiber industry. Career opportunities are abundant for agricultural education students.

    Extension activities
The Florida Cooperative Extension Service (FCES) is a structured educational program that assists the public in using the many resources of the University of Florida and its Institute of Food and Agricultural Sciences in achieving community and individual goals. The FCES conducts non-formal and youth educational programs in all 67 Florida counties. These programs provide scientifically-based knowledge on agriculture, home and commercial horticulture, environmental and natural resource issues, and human resource issues to assist citizens in making decisions that will contribute to an improved life. Design teams for State Major Programs
Issues to be addressed by FCES educational programs are identified through input from citizens, community organizations, and university specialists. While some programs are conducted on topics and issues unique to a given locality, many FCES programs address issues that are of importance to a relatively large audience across the state. These latter issues are frequently addressed by the development of a state major programthat is, a program which focuses significant resources on achieving a large impact in a relatively short time. Faculty members of the Department of Agricultural Education and Communication participate on various design teams for state major programs. In-service Extension training
Faculty in the Agricultural Education and Communication Department conduct an active professional development program in communications and instruction. The major thrust of this effort is to provide in-service training for county Extension faculty in communication skills and concepts. Training is also provided on communication and instructional skills, concepts, and techniques for Extension program clientele, employees of county governments throughout the state, Extension program volunteers, and, when sessions are offered at county offices, for support staff.
