Background Information Like my protagonist, Caroline Rhodes, I'm an ER nurse by profession working part-time in a Level Two trauma hospital. Many of my plot ideas come from past experiences in nursing. I've been influenced by the work of Agatha Christie. I believe all mysteries need strong plots and good puzzles. Accomplishments My first mystery, A DEADLY LITTLE CHRISTMAS, was a finalist in the 1996 Hemingway First Novel Competition under the title FOUR TO GO. DEADLY won the Reader's Choice Award for Best First Mystery at the Love is Murder 2000 mystery convention.

Mary Welk About Mary Welk:
My first published work, a serialized short story, appeared in a school newspaper when I was thirteen. I've been writing ever since, although A DEADLY LITTLE CHRISTMAS is my first full length novel. My past work included short stories, poetry, and song lyrics. Still, the mystery genre has always been my favorite, and I came back to it when writing A DEADLY LITTLE CHRISTMAS. Like most authors, I have a "real" job that pays the bills; I've been a registered nurse since 1968 and currently work two evenings a week at Rush North Shore Medical Center in the Emergency Department. Caroline Rhodes, the sleuth in my novel, is herself a nurse, and is based on the many fine nurses I've met over the years. Her partner in detection, Professor Carl Atwater, teaches college history, a subject I'm particularly fond of. Some Thoughts: Bibliography A DEADLY LITTLE CHRISTMAS Christmas on a psychiatric ward can be downright depressing, but the nurses of St. Anne's Hospital are determined to deck the blues by decking the halls. There's only one problem: someone's planted a bomb in their brand new artificial Christmas tree. Caroline Rhodes, RN, teams up with Professor of History Carl Atwater to unmask 'The Mad Bomber of Rhineburg'. SOMETHING WICKED IN THE AIR To be released in spring, 1999. A practical joke leads to murder and mayhem in Rhineburg when a Viking rune stone is discovered on the campus of Bruck University. Caroline Rhodes, RN, and Professor of History Carl Atwater attempt to salvage Bruck's Festival of Knights when a shadowy killer takes to the jousts.

  • Sharon Schulz-Elsing 's early exposure to The Cat in the Hat and daily newspapers begat a lifelong obsession with all things written. She spent so much college tuition and time on literature, writing and grammar classes that she had no choice but to accept the cum laude journalism and English degrees conferred upon her by a small but distinguished Midwestern school of liberal arts. An eight-year tour of duty in the bookselling trenches has yielded a lifetime's worth of experience in the book industry she mostly loves and occasionally despises. As editor, she shoulders the blame for everything on Curled Up With a Good Book . As a contributing reviewer, she at least gets to take some of the credit, which she faithfully shares with a longsuffering husband, a toddler daughter, a wicked, wicked mongrel cat and the ghost of her dog.
  • Wisecracker and book reviewer Martin Schmutterer considers himself a prairie cosmopolitan. He earns scant income as an adjunct college instructor, occasional bookseller, and sporadic writer. He fancies cheese, bourbon and the Central European novel. His wife wears the pants in the family, but the dog calls all the shots.

SUSAN McBRIDE -
MARY WELK -
I started writing A Deadly Little Christmas late in 1992. The plot came from a story I'd written twenty years before and tucked away in my desk. It might have never seen the light of day again except for the fact that my father died in June 1992 while a patient in the hospital unit where I worked. His illness was never really diagnosed by the doctors. And though I poured over his chart looking for clues for his decline, I came up with nothing. It was extremely depressing, and it plagued me for months. I began writing DEADLY just to get my thoughts out in the open. Caroline Rhodes' depression over the death of her husband and her inability to prevent that death mirrored my own feelings about my father. Writing the book served to heal some of my own wounds, but then the story took on a life of its own.
I began to think it might just be publishable, so I sent the manuscript to a professional editor who worked with me through six rewrites. In 1996, I entered it in the Malice Domestic First Novel Competition and the Hemingway First Novel Competition. It won neither, but was a finalist in the Hemingway contest. I also received a letter from the woman who had judged DEADLY for Malice Domestic. She said it was a great manuscript and urged me not to change a word and to enter the competition again in 1997. I planned to do just that.
