John Webster was the eldest son of the owner of a business engaging in the making, hiring and selling of coaches, wagons and carts in Cow Lane. Living in the Smithfield area of London, the family belonged to St Sepulcre's parish. As no coachmaker's company was incoporated until 1677, John Webster senior and later his son, Edward became freemen of the Merchant Taylor's Company, whose school John Webster almost certainly attended before passing to the New Inn and being admitted to the Middle Temple on 1st August 1589. The earliest records of John Webster's employment as a dramatist are found in the diary - more properly and account book of the theatre manager and financer Phillip Henslowe who in 1602, paid Webster together with Anthony Munday, Thomas Middleton and Thomas Dekker, Henry Chettle and Michael Drayton for work on 'Caesers Fall' and 'Christmas Comes But Once A Year' both now lost, and 'Lady Jane', a 2 part play which probably survives rescontructed and shortened in 'The Famous History of Sir Thomas Wyatt' in 1607. Webster may have had a collaborating hand in Middleton's comedy 'Anything for a Quiet Life' 1620 - 21 and 'The Fair Maid of the Inn' which was liscenced for production in 1626 and printed in Beaumont and Fletcher first folio in 1647. The dates of his other extrant plays are uncertain. Probably between 1624 and 1625 he collaborated with Rowley and perhaps Heywood for the comedy 'A Cure for the Cuckold' and wrote some part of the minor tragedy 'Appius and Virginia'. Though he was the author of some occasional verses, Webster seems to have written no other plays and it is presumed that he died in 1630.

John Webster Born sometime around 1580, John Webster was to be the last of the great Elizabethan playwrights. Much like many of his contemporaries, little is known of the poet himself. There was a John Webster admitted to the Middle Temple on August 1, 1598. If this Webster and the dramatist were one and the same, it would explain the many legal allusions in his plays and the inclusion of trial scenes in The White Devil, The Devil's Law Case, and Appius and Virginia The earliest known records of Webster's employment as a playwright are found in the diary of theatre manager Phillip Henslowe at the beginning of the new century. Among the payments which Henslowe noted in his diary in 1602 were those made to Webster, Anthony Munday, Thomas Middleton , Michael Drayton "and the rest" for a play entitled Caesar's Fall . Over the next decade or so, Henslowe's records show Webster collaborating with Dekker and Heywood, writing a prologue to Marston's Malcontent , and composing his two masterpieces The White Devil and The Duchess of Malfi Webster has sometimes been criticized for the limited scope of his plays. He knows nothing, for instance, of the tenderness and pleasant fantasy of Shakespeare. It was mankind's anguish and evil alone which captured his imagination. But his verse is poetry of the highest order and holds its own with the best of

My graduate students and I are involved in the following research.
Electrode design for cardiac tachyarrhythmia ablation
We will optimize catheter design for the cure of atrial fibrillation (AFIB) and ventricular tachycardia (VT) by radiofrequency (RF) ablation. In the USA about 2 million people are affected by some form of AFIB. Each year about 200,000 patients are treated for VT. This study will develop complex finite element (FE) models and perform experimental tests to optimize the design of ablation catheters capable of producing long thin lesions for the cure of AFIB. It will also develop complex numerical models and perform experimental tests to optimize the design of ablation catheters capable of creating wide and deep lesions for the cure of VT.

Webster is best known for a famous attack on the university curriculum, Academiarum examen, urging laboratory observation as in chemistry, a work drawing upon the Paracelsian tradition and on Van Helmont, and indebted as well to Fludd.
He published Metallographia, 1671 (possibly an earlier edition in 1661), which again displayed his debt to Paracelsus and Van Helmont. Both in England and on the continent, this book was considered an important work on metals and on minerals.

    John Clarence Webster
Canadian surgeon, born October 21, 1863, Shediac, New Brunswick; died March 16, 1950, Shediac, New Brunswick.
    Associated eponyms:
    Baldy-Webster operation

An operation for retroversion of the uterus by shortening the round ligaments. Biography: John Clarence Webster was the son of James Webster and Rosaline Chapman in Shediac, New Brunswick. While a surgeon he wrote medical and scientific treatises, but upon retirement from medicine, he turned to historical research and helped found museums at Saint John and Fort Beauséjour. Webster matriculated from Mount Allison, a small country college, in 1878. He received his medical education at Edinburgh, which was his headquarters for thirteen years after he left for Europe on a ship in 1883. He specialised in gynaecology and obstetrics, taught at the universities and carried out research. In 1896, Webster returned to Canada to take a position with McGill at Montreal. In 1899 he married Alice Kessier Lusk, and together they had three children, Janet Webster, John Clarence Webster, and William Lusk Webster. The same year, 1899, he took a position at the University of Chicago, where he remained for twenty years. Following his resignation in 1919 he left medicine, returned to his home at Shediac, and turned to the study of history. Webster is now mainly remembered for his contributions to the knowledge of the early history of Canada and in particular early Nova Scotia, a topic on which he amassed an impressive collection of books and prints. This collection was given to the New Brunswick Museum. He became a Trustee of the Public Archives of Nova Scotia, a Member of the Historic and Monuments Board of Canada, and the Honorary Curator of Fort Beausejour Museum.

Although little is known of his life, there is evidence that he worked for Philip Henslowe , collaborating with such playwrights as Dekker and Ford. Webster's literary reputation rests almost entirely on his two great tragedies, The White Devil (c. 1608) and The Duchess of Malfi (c. 1614). Violent and sensational, both plays treat the theme of revenge and generate a brooding, somber mood. Webster's highly poetic language and profound understanding of human suffering create a true tragic pathos and force. See his works (ed. by F. L. Lucas, 4 vol., 1927); studies by C. Little is known of Webster's life. His preface to Monuments of Honor, his Lord Mayor's Show for 1624, says he was born a freeman of the Merchant Taylors' Company. He was probably a coachmaker, and possibly he was an actor. Apart from his two major plays and The Devils Law-Case c. 1620; published 1623), his dramatic work consists of collaborations (not all extant) with leading writers. With Thomas Dekker , his main collaborator, he wrote Westward Ho (1604) and Northward Ho (1605), both of which were published in 1607. He is also believed to have worked to varying degrees with William Rowley, Thomas Middleton John Fletcher John Ford , and perhaps Philip Massinger . Eight extant plays and some nondramatic verse and prose are wholly or partly his; the most standard edition is The Complete Works of John Webster

There is a record of a John Webster entered at Middle Temple, one of the Inns of Court, in 1598, but it is not certain that he was John Webster, the playwright. It is, however, likely, considering Webster's connections with Templars Sir Thomas Overbury John Marston , and John Ford , as well as his knowledge of law as evidenced later by his plays. Yet whoever this Webster was, he was never called to the bar.
