David Wagoner: David Wagoner, a professor of English at the University of Washington, has edited Poetry Northwest for thirty-six years. In addition to many previous volumes of poetry, most recently Walt Whitman Bathing and Traveling Light , he has published ten novels, including The Escape Artist , which was made into a movie by Francis Ford Coppola. (Photograph of David Wagoner by Robin Seyfried)
About The House of Song As a recipient of Poetry 's Levinson Prize and the Ruth Lilly Prize and a nominee for the American Book Award and the National Book Award, David Wagoner is one of this country's most celebrated poets.
In The House of Song , he offers a hundred new poems in six parts. At turns elegiac, comic, and nostalgic, these poems venture to the seemingly infinitesimal points where people, legends, and culture collide with nature, memory, and action. The House of Song asserts Wagoner's place among the finest of American poets, past and present.

A PROFESSOR'S SLOW PROGRESS We recognize, from his scowl and steady pace, He has a purpose and may be making progress Across our campus this morning. His white hair Is turning in the wind, changing in all directions Like the freshman fountain among the green and purple And resurrected and prolonged and braided And filigreed and love-knotted and mohawked Others who are invading the halls of Sport And Business and the Memorial Grove Of our nearly, dearly, and yearly remembered founders And donors. And now in chronological order— Full face, profile, much-abused rear view— We watch him pass (without a mortar board Or a skull cap or a weather-wise beret To crown his eyes and ears and his set mouth) And follow him up stairs, through a corridor Into a room where he becomes a source Of uneasy answers to harder and harder questions, Where he lifts and puts aside pieces of paper On which unfinished poems have begun To pull themselves into shape through exercise

Wagoner, David Their Bodies
Genre Poem Keywords Anatomy Family Relationships Human Worth Summary Wagoner dedicates his poem "to the students of anatomy at Indiana University" and later confirms this clue that he is writing about the donated bodies of his parents. He briefly connects the post-mortem physical characteristics of the couple to the lives they led. Then he pleads for respect: "You should treat them / One last time as they would have treated you." Wagoner hopes students will learn from the bodies "as he did" and begs them to learn "politely and truly." Then the kicker as third person: "They gave away the gift of those useful bodies / Against his wish" and closes: "be gentle to everybody." Source First Light: Poems Publisher Little, Brown (Boston)
