USA David St. John AN INTERVIEW WITH DAVID ST. JOHN
BY ANDRENA ZAWINSKI
"...Literature helps to forge humanity in culture,
and poetry is the white hot heat of that forge." David St. John conducts writing workshops high in the hills above Sausalito, CA for the editors of Runes, A Review of Poetry. CB 'Lyn Follett (an upcoming Feature in this digizine) and Susan Terris (whose work appears in this issue) sponsor these as three different master classesthe Whitmans, the Dickinsons, and the Elliotseach of which meets twice annually. This interview with David St. John, a warm teacher who teems with an inexhaustible knowledge of poetry, emerged from a Dickinson Workshop.
AZ: Why do you see reading a variety of other poets as so essential to a poet learning or even perfecting the craft?
DSJ: There needs to be a constellation of influences in order for a young writer to be able to position him or herself in terms of voice, or presence, or whatever you want to call it. Poetry is a long conversation with poems and poets who have come before and who will come after, and I don't just mean those poems or poets from one's own language. Poetry is the language of the world at its best, its most humane and impassioned. We need to know and make use of the clothes poetry wears in many languages so we may bring to the poetry of our own, in our own language, the spirit and resonance of voice which seems most universal, most intimate, and most compelling.

David St. John USA Three years ago when our annual poetry anthology RUNES, A Review of Poetry was still in the planning stages, we asked our friend David St. John if he'd be willing to fly to San Francisco and lead a 2-day poetry workshop. He said, "YES!" Six weeks later, with a group of 15 Bay Area poets, we held the first of these weekends in 'Lyn Follett's house high in the hills above Sausalito. Now, due to overwhelming demand, we find ourselves, as editors of RUNES , sponsoring three different groups (the Whitmans, the Dickinsons, and the Eliots) which each meet twice a year. We have never decided exactly what to call these weekends. Because the poets in these groups are extremely accomplished and well-read, the sessions feel more like master classes than workshops. A great deal of our time is spent not only on poems by the participants but in discussion of the craft of poetry. David is a brilliant teacher with an encyclopedic knowledge in of poetry ancient and modern. We find these weekends intense and rewarding. And, yes, we have waiting lists. And our waiting lists have waiting lists. RUNES, A Review

Mr David Bevan Teaching
I teach, with my college colleagues, the first year course in economics, and the second year core courses in microeconomics and macroeconomics. The teaching of the optional papers in economics is organized centrally by the department of economics using a system of course convenors. I am the convenor for the public economics option and also provide lectures, classes and tutorials for this. Otherwise I lecture on graduate courses, particularly for the MSc in Economics for Development.
The Department of Economics has a web page.
Research
My research is divided between mainly theoretical microeconomic work in the field of public economics, and more applied macro and policy oriented studies of developing countries, particularly in Sub-Saharan Africa. I have recently been working on the theory of optimal income taxes: on computable general equilibrium models which try to capture the functioning of entire economies: on fiscal decentralization in Ethiopia: and on the problems of macroeconomic and budgetary management in Uganda and Tanzania.
