It doesn't hurt that Field is an actor himself: the Academy has always looked kindly on hyphenates. But if "In the Bedroom" does scoop a few statuettes in March, it will probably be down to its cast, who root the rather melodramatic narrative in recognisably human emotions and failings. The peace and tranquillity of a small village in Maine is shattered when the son of doctor Matt Fowler ( Wilkinson ) and his music teacher wife Ruth (Spacek) is killed by his girlfriend's ex-husband.

Public Schools Have Destroyed America An Invitation from L. Neil Smith Published 03. 18. 03 at 0:20 Sierra Time
If you're like me, even through a fairly hard shell of cynicism about such things acquired through years of disappointment in our country and our fellow human beings you are shocked and dismayed at the casual way Americans have been stripped of their few remaining rights over the past 17 months and stampeded straight to World War III. It's relatively easy to see who's immediately responsible for all that, but the Bush Administration is only taking advantage of an existing circumstance, and it's that circumstance I want to address here.

Entertainment Films homepage ... Help Like this page? Send it to a friend! Bigger Picture Alan Parker: Career Profile Written by Neil Smith updated 18th January 2001 Like contemporaries Ridley Scott and Adrian Lyne, Alan Parker made his name in advertising before turning his hand to the big screen. Perhaps that explains why many of his films, from eye-catching debut "Bugsy Malone" (1976) to the blockbuster musical "Evita" (1996), have been lavish spectacles whose opulent visuals conceal a hollow dramatic core. Not that Parker is incapable of restraint. "Shoot the Moon" (1982) was a painfully raw study of a disintegrating marriage, while he let the music do the talking in Dublin-based crowd-pleaser "The Commitments" (1991). It's just that this London-born film maker tends to let scale and bombast take precedence over human drama - nowhere more so than in "Angela's Ashes" (1999), which took Frank McCourt's gentle memoir of growing up in 1930s Limerick and transformed it into an overblown tableau of sentimentalised Irish hardship. Parker's refusal to limit himself to one genre makes him a difficult director to pigeon-hole. His oeuvre encompasses hard-hitting real-life dramas ("Midnight Express", "Mississippi Burning"), supernatural thrillers ("

A Message From L. Neil Smith Published 03. 23. 02 at 18:54 Sierra Time
I've been writing for publication since I was about 10 years old, and writing novels for 25 years. In all that time, I've refrained from responding to book critics. In the first place, there didn't seem to be much dignity in it. Also, I've always figured a bad review coming from the right critic could only enhance my sales. Mostly, because critics as a class (I've known some) are failed subcreatures who can only make a mark in the world by attacking the achievements of others, I reasoned that the most painful wound I could inflict on them was to ignore them and let it be widely known that I never look at anything they write.

Robert Heinlein Remembered
by L. Neil Smith
Take big bites. Anything worth doing is worth overdoing.
Robert A. Heinlein, Time Enough for Love

Red Planet
and Tunnel in the Sky . As would be the case years later with a certain little old Russian lady's name, he didn't know how to pronounce "Heinlein".
The Green Hills of Earth formed my first coherent vision of the future, establishing the historical context for my own life, convincing me (as kids must be if they're to turn out civilized) that, just as millions of human beings preceded me in past ages, so millions more will follow in ages to come. At the same time, Methuselah's Children revealed to me that, yes, I do want to live forever, and that such a thing, given time and the stubborn application of reason, might just be possible.
Between Planets taught me that a kid never knows when the demands of adulthood will tap him on the shoulder. There are worse things that could happen. Starman Jones taught me that the adult world makes about as much sense as the average train wreck, and that it's the first duty of anyone who aspires to be a whole human being to start re-making the world the way he wants it. Toward that end

Exclusive to TLE It's good to be alive. I can say that with some authority because, up until the middle of this week, I thought there was a small chance I wouldn't be alive much longer. It started innocently enough. I had decided to start a personal exercise program because all I've ever hunted were rabbits and mule deer, and I wanted to go elk hunting this fall. I have the rifles for it, a .35 Whelen and a .416 Rigby. Somewhere out there, too, I know, is an American bison with my name on it, and maybe even a big Alaskan bear. I had tentatively engaged a professional to design an exercise program for me one of the coaches at the local ice rink where I've written my last four books but I thought it might be a good idea at my age (56), and with my medical history (among other things I have adult-onset diabetes and asthma), to get a go-ahead from my family physician. A hunter and fisherman himself, he agreed that my goals were reasonable, but added that he wanted me to undergo something called a "nuclear treadmill test" just to make sure my heart was up to it. I'd had dozens of treadmill tests, although most of them seemed to be powered by electricity, or maybe kerosene, but I went and took the nuclear test anyway. What they do is shoot you up with a radioactive tracer, scan your heart once you've rested for half an hour, then put you on the treadmill until you're up to a respectable fraction of your maximum allowable heart rate, shoot you with the tracer, and scan you again.
