Harcourt Brace ISBN 0151004226 Hardcover $22.00 96pp Charles Simic is one of the few poets who has rocked the world of poetry this century. In 1990, his book, The World Doesn't End (Harcourt Brace) won the Pulitzer Prize for poetry. What seemed so shocking at the time is that it was the first book (and only book) of prose poetry to win this prestigious award. Mr. Simic has published over 60 books, was the guest editor for The Best American Poetry 1992 , and was awarded a MacArthur Fellowship in 1984. During a telephone interview with Mr Simic, I asked him what he thought about all of his achievements. "I don't think about it. I suppose I would be considered a success because I have published a lot of books. All these books don't give me confidence because I always have to write the next poem. You don't say to yourself that since you published all these books not to worry about it. I do worry about it. Success is ok for five minutes." The Pulitzer is one of the three coveted prizes for poets, with the National Book Critics Circle Award and the National Book Award being the other two. Winning even one of these could be considered the crowning achievement of any poet's life. I asked Mr. Simic how he felt when he won the Pulitzer in 1990. "Well there was surprise, it was a shocking surprise and I didn't mind. I had hopes for other books in the past which I had thought would be candidates. I didn't think this book would do anything much. Some people were very upset and wrote that this wasn't poetry."

The Wooden Toy
The brightly-painted horse
Had a boy's face,
And four small wheels
Under his feet, Plus a long string
To pull him by this way and that
Across the floor,
Should you care to. A string in-waiting
That slipped away
In many wiles
From each and every try.
Knock and they'll answer, Mother told me. So I climbed four flights of stairs And went in unannounced. And found a small wooden toy For the taking In the ensuing emptiness And the fading daylight That still gives me a shudder As if I held the key to mysteries in my hand. Where's the Lost and Found Department, And the quiet entry, The undeveloped film Of the few clear moments Of our blurred lives? Where's the drop of blood And the teeny nail That pricked my finger As I bent down to touch the toy And caught its eye? Evening light, Make me a Sunday Go-to meeting shadow For my toy. My dearest memories are Steep stair-wells In dusty buildings On dead-end streets, Where I talk to the walls And closed doors As if they understood me. The wooden toy sitting pretty.

Against Winter The truth is dark under your eyelids.
What are you going to do about it?
The birds are silent; there's no one to ask.
All day long you'll squint at the gray sky.
When the wind blows you'll shiver like straw. A meek little lamb you grew your wool
Till they came after you with huge shears.
Flies hovered over open mouth,
Then they, too, flew off like the leaves,
The bare branches reached after them in vain. Winter coming. Like the last heroic soldier
Of a defeated army, you'll stay at your post,
Head bared to the first snow flake. Till a neighbor comes to yell at you, You're crazier than the weather, Charlie. Charles D. Simic Brief Biography of Charles D. Simic Charles D. Simic has been hailed as one of the America's finest poets. Born May 9, 1938, in Belgrade, Yugoslavia, he arrived in America when he was 16 to rejoin his father in New York City. They moved to Oak Park shortly after that. Simic lived here 1955 to 1962. While a student at Oak Park River Forest High School , a suburban school with caring teachers and motivated students, Simic began to take new interest in his courses, especially literature. After graduation from OPRFHS in 1956, he worked a full-time job as an office boy with the Chicago Sun Times while attending college at night.

A Conversation with Charles Simic
Fans of Charles Simic have recently been treated to not one but two new volumes. Hotel Insomnia and Dimestore Alchemy: The Art of Joseph Cornell (both 1992) clearly affirm Simic's reputation as street-wise visionary and learned prankster. Indeed, if these two latest books share anything with Simic's previous work, it's that their materials (the images, the people, the plots) have a quirky immediacy about them, a comfortable here-and-nowness; and that in this daylight clutter and ordinariness, he consistently finds subtle and wide-ranging resonance. Poetry is everywhere, Simic shows us once again; "the question," according to Thoreau, "is not what you look at, but what you see."

IN THE VILLAGE OF MY ANCESTORS
Someone embraces me
Someone looks at me with the eyes of a wolf
Someone takes off his hat
So I can see him better Everyone asks me
Do you know how I'm related to you Unknown old men and women

Of young men and women from my memory I ask one of them

Novica Tadic: NIGHT MAIL
(translated by Charles Simic)
"Bruno Schulz said: 'The sublime nature of the divine order...can be rendered only by the power of human negation.' He was speaking of Kafka's feel for the boundaries of the human and the divine. Tadic has the same feel. He composes anti-poems, anti-psalms, anti-prayers. Such complexity in poems that are almost exclusively very short! In my view, he is one of the most original and interesting poets today." Charles Simic paper $14.95

Poetry
founded in 1912 by Harriet Monroe, is published monthly by the Modern Poetry Association. Joseph Parisi, its editor, explained its editorial philosophy in the 75th anniversary issue of the magazine, published in 1987: POETRY continues in service to poetry ... by trying to represent, as Stephen Spender has said 'the best, and simply the best' poems being written today. "Literary editors are often asked about the selection policies of their publications. An editor of POETRY POETRY "This attitude holds and the invitation it implies still stands. In recent years, the number of poems received at these offices has reached upwards of 60,000 [now 80,000] annually. As always, the quality of the work, not its source, is what POETRY editors look for."

My first poems were published in the winter of 1959 issue of Chicago Review , but other publications came slowly after that; the mail brought me rejection slips every day. One, I remember, had a personal note from the editor that said: "Dear Mr. Simic, you're obviously an intelligent young man, so why do you waste your time writing so much about pigs and cockroaches? Charles Simic, in an essay called "New York Days, 1958-1964" UNLIKE MANY OF his contemporaries, Charles Simic, who went from the Chicago Review to a Pulitzer Prize in 1990 for his collection of poems The World Doesn't End , has continued to play to his strengths. "The folk surrealism, the mysticism, the eroticism, and the wild flights of romance and rhetoric," he's called it, referring to the French and German modernists who discovered in the rise of behavioral science new ways to mix the subconscious, the visionary, and the strange into the foundation of creative work. Simic was in Manhattan when this epiphany hit him, decades ago, listening to early bebop jazz in the back room of a nightclub. Having been run around in circles by his friends back in Chicago, accused of writing poems that were nothing more than "crazy images strung arbitrarily together," or worse, poems that "don't mean anything," Simic was amazed to hear so clearly stated in the melodies of American jazz something he'd been struggling to understand about how his poetry
