I know a thing or two, I know a bank whereon the wild thyme grows!" And if one asks him: "But is that all?" he winks at one, saying: "Enough said; I give you a hint: eye has not seen, never heart fancied; tolling melodious notes, wrung with emotion, it rolls; fairy! drunken! enough said." But is it true? Fairy? If it is a fancy, then it is not of the least interest or importance; but the scientist says "yes, a fact", and the artist with streaming tears calls God to witness it. The scientist's part in art, however, is not seen by Machen, who conceives that art preceded science, that "poetry has nothing to do with scientific truths", does not, in fact, quite know what science is , thinks that the fact "A loves B" is "a scientific truth", so does not know that science is the

Matthew Phipps Shiel (1865-1947), was born July 21, 1865, in Montserrat, West Indies. His concept, though the latter under a communal rather than individualistic form, and not as something inherent in a race or creed, but rather a status achieved through learning. During his life Shiel wrote 25 novels and numerous short-stories, the best of which he produced between 1895 and 1905. These include Prince Zaleski Shapes of Fire Cold Steel Contraband of War The Purple Cloud (1901) and Lord of the Sea . Shiel died on February 17, 1947, at a hospital in Chichester. ISFDB Bibliography

Man's goings are of God: how can a man then understand his own way? Proverbs "Oh, Mr. Parker, he is coming at last, sir!" "Good heavens! you mean the Doctor?" "The Doctor, sirsaw him with my own eyeshe is on foot must have passed through the north park gates, and is at this moment coming up the drive!" I ran to the lawn; saw him slowly coming in the old frock-coat of thin stuff, his eyes studying the ground. "Ah, Parker"he glanced up and held out a limp hand"that you? Well, I hope?" " I am well enough, thank you, Doctor." "And why the accented I? My sister, Parker?" I was simply astounded. "You have not then heard?" "Heard? I have heard nothing." "Merciful heavens! in what land have you then wandered?" "Parker, in a land far away." I said nothing more, nor he. For the first time in his life he felt fearfear to ask the question which I felt fear to answer.

THE LOST CLUB JOURNAL "L'Abri" by Malcolm M. Fergusson The Redondan Cultural Foundation Newsletter exists to promote interest in the life and works of M. P. Shiel, but there is no reason why King Felipe of Redonda shouldn't be celebrated in this journal also; since the editorial addresses of the Lost Club are those of the Cultural Foundation. Hence this enjoyable and informative wartime reminiscence by a peer of Redonda, shorter versions of which were published in Famous Fantastic Mysteries in August 1949 and in A. Reynolds Morse's The Works of M.P. Shiel: "The Shielography Updated", Volume III, Part 2 (1980). Malcolm M. Ferguson was honoured with a dukedom by John Gawsworth, King Juan I, in the first Birthday Honours List in June 1947. Mr Ferguson, who lives in Concord, Massachusetts, is officially retired from his profession of bookseller, though he still deals a little as a sideline. Once a bookman... It is interesting to note that in one of his letters quoted here, Shiel refers to his old associate W.T. Stead, the crusading editor of the Pall Mall Gazette and the Review of Reviews.

12. M.P.Shiel
by Philip Lister. The most decadent and imperial detective in fiction (and presumablyin reality), MP shiel's Prince Zaleski, is about to enjoy a renaissance.
http://freepages.pavilion.net/users/tartarus/zaleski.html
THE LOST CLUB JOURNAL Dweller in the Tomb of Mausolus: The Return of Prince Zaleski by Philip Lister Le Visage Vert Last Journey All Souls ; but let's hope not . . . Prince Zaleski appeared: 'Thanks for your praise. But why do you insist on comparing me with Conan Doyle? Conan Doyle does not pretend to be a poet. I do.' These were the days when Shiel was content to adhere to the 'art for art's sake' philosophy. In later years, when he sought to use his books as vehicles for the education of the common reader, his work suffered. But most poets do not write long series of detective tales, and so Shiel was fated to abandon the prince; for a time at least. The first Zaleski tales are now regarded as classics of their genre. Jorge Luis Borges and Adolfo Bioy-Casares pay tribute to 'the mandarin M. P. Shiel' in their Six Problems for Don Isidro Parodi (Buenos Aires, 1942; New York and London, 1981). The essentially sedentary nature of the prince contributed to Borges' and Casares' creation of don Isidro, who solves mysteries from the discomfort of a Buenos Aires prison cell. The authors write: Without leaving his nightly den in the Faubourg St Germain, the gentleman Auguste Dupin captures the troublesome ape who caused the tragedies in the Rue Morgue; Prince Zaleski, from his remote palace retreat, where in sumptuous surroundings the jewel rubs shoulders with the music box, the amphora with the sarcophagus, the idol with the winged bull, solves the crimes of London; and last but not least, Max Carrados carries with him everywhere the portable jail cell of his blindness.

It may not be obvious to most readers what Eden Phillpotts, Arthur Ransome, Frank Swinnerton, and Dylan Thomas have in common with Lawrence and Gerald Durrell, Dorothy Sayers, Rebecca West, Roy Campbell, and Henry Miller; or Martin Secker, Victor Gollancz, Alfred A. Knopf, Stephen Potter, J. B. Priestley, and A. F. Tschiffely with Carl Van Vechten, E. H. W. Meyerstein, Edgar Jepson, John Heath-Stubbs, Herbert Palmer, Derek Patmore, J. C. Trewin, and Arthur Machen. Books apart, very little. Their one certain bond is loyalty to a fellow writer, as a result of which they became members of a literary aristocracy whose origins lie in the last century. (Confirming their appointment as dukes, duchesses, and lesser nobility, I have by me three "State Papers" imposingly printed on eighteenth-century paper and signed in 1947, 1949, and 1951 by G. S. Fraser and Iain Fletcher in their capacities of Grand and Acting Grand Chamber-lains of the Realm of Redonda.) Before all this gets out of hand we must go back to 1865 and the Leeward Islands of the Caribbean.

    About the Collection
M.P. Shiel Finding Aid for the Collection Inventory List ... Shiel Links About the Collection The A. Reynolds Morse Collection of M.P. Shiel is one of the most complete collections of Shieliana in existence. The Collection contains not only the most complete set of all editions of Shiel's writings and some Shiel manuscripts, but also has reference and classic works on science fiction, detection, fantasy, and mystery as well as the works of Louis Tracy and John Gawsworth. Also included in the Collection are some of Mr. Morse's correspondence and research notes concerning M.P. Shiel. In 1942, Ren Morse read his first novel by M.P. Shiel. After five years of reading, studying, and collecting, Mr. Morse published in 1948 The Works of M.P. Shiel: A Study in Bibliography , one year after Shiel's death. Innovative in concept, the Shielography contained not only the most complete listing of Shiel's known works at the time of publication, but also comments, insights, and evaluations by Morse. In 1977, John D. Squires wrote to Mr. Morse to ascertain whether or not he was the author of the Shielography. As Mr. Morse recounts, it was Mr. Squires who "lured me to re-examine this redoubtable author whose first editions and other memorabilia had meantime slept peacefully in the attic!" The letter began a collaboration between the two to revive interest in Shiel. This resulted in the publishing of four massive volumes about the life and work of M.P. Shiel, the re-issuance of one novel and the publishing of Shiel's last, unpublished novel
