John Ruskin
b. Feb. 8, 1819, London, Eng.
d. Jan. 20, 1900, Coniston, Lancashire English writer, critic, and artist who championed the Gothic Revival movement in architecture and had a large influence upon public taste in art in Victorian England. Youth John Ruskin's parents recognized a dangerous precocity and an unstable genius in their child and sheltered him from contact with reality. His father, John James Ruskin, was a successful wine merchant. The Ruskins moved to Herne Hill, on the southern outskirts of London, when Ruskin was four, and to nearby Denmark Hill, near Dulwich, when he was 20. His natural appetite for pictures found satisfaction in the Dulwich College Picture Gallery, and the pictures exhibited there remained the basis of his thoughts on art. The Dulwich gallery, his readings at home, and his father's encouragement of his facile talents in writing and drawing were the most valuable part of his education. He also took drawing lessons from the watercolourist Copley Fielding. When he was 14 the family began a series of tours in Europe, and in the Alps he found the beauty and sublimity that his imagination needed. When he was 17 Ruskin fell in love with Ade le Domecq, the daughter of his father's Spanish partner. The frustration of this affair seems to have been the effective cause of a permanent failure to attain emotional maturity. In 1836 Ruskin went up to Christ Church, Oxford, where his studies were desultory and his social life was hampered by his mother's presence in lodgings nearby. Nonetheless, he had gotten away from the suburbs and made friends who were permanently to enrich his life. He won the Newdigate prize for poetry in 1839 and, because of a generous allowance from his father, was able to begin to collect pictures by J.M.W. Turner.

Critic and Reformer
The first volume of Ruskin's Modern Painters The Seven Lamps of Architecture (1849) applied these same theories to architecture. In 1848, Ruskin married Euphemia Gray, a beautiful young woman with social ambitions; the union, which apparently was never consummated, was annulled in 1854, and Mrs. Ruskin subsequently married the painter John Everett Millais. From his position as the foremost English art critic, Ruskin in 1851 defended the work of the Pre-Raphaelite group. His third great volume of criticism, The Stones of Venice Unto This Last (in Cornhill Magazine, 1860) and Munera Pulveris (in Fraser's Magazine, Ruskin's positive program for social reform appeared in Sesame and Lilies The Crown of Wild Olive Time and Tide (1867), and Fors Clavigera Praeterita Sections in this article:

HUTCHINSON ENCYCLOPEDIA Ruskin, John English art and social critic. Much of his finest art criticism appeared in two widely influential works, Modern Painters (184360) and The Seven Lamps of Architecture (1849). He was a keen advocate of painters considered unorthodox at the time, such as J M W Turner and members of the Pre-Raphaelite Brotherhood . His later writings were concerned with social and economic problems. Ruskin was one of the major figures of 19th-century British intellectual life. Like his contemporaries Thomas Carlyle and Matthew Arnold , he was an outspoken critic of Victorian society, and, like them, called for a renewal of British moral, intellectual, and artistic life. His early works were concerned with architecture and painting his support both for the Pre-Raphaelite Brotherhood and the Gothic Revival had a profound effect on Victorian art, architecture, and crafts.

Ruskin, John Ruskin, John, , English critic and social theorist. During the mid-19th cent. Ruskin was the virtual dictator of artistic opinion in England, but Ruskin's reputation declined after his death, and he has been treated harshly by 20th-century critics. Although it is undeniable that he was an extravagant and inconsistent thinker (a reflection of his lifelong mental and emotional instability), it is equally true that he revolutionized art criticism and wrote some of the most superb prose in the English language.
