B C D ... Z by birthday from the calendar Credits and feedback Sax Rohmer (1883-1959) - original name ARTHUR HENRY SARSFIELD WARD - wrote also as Michael Furey Prolific English mystery writer, best known for the master criminal Dr. Fu Manchu and his opponents Denis Nayland Smith, Dr. Petrie, named after the Egyptologist Flinders Petrie, and the beautiful Kâramanéh, the source of Petrie's daydrems, whose "eyes held a challenge wholly Oriental in its appeal." In spite of Rohmer's popularity, his family lived long times in poverty because of the bad deals he made with the publishers. "Imagine a person, tall, lean and feline, high shouldered, with a brow like Shakespeare and a face like Satan, a close-shaven skull, and long, magnetic eyes of the true cat-green. Invest him with all the cruel cunning of an entire Eastern race, accumulated in one giant intellect, with all the resources of science past and present, with all the resources, if you will, of a wealthy government - which, however, already has denied all knowledge of his existence. Imagine that awful being, and you have a mental picture of Dr Fu Manchu, the yellow peril incarnate in one man..." (from The Mystery of Dr Fu Manchu Sax Rohmer was born Arthur Henry Ward in Birmingham of Irish parents. His father, William Ward, was employed as an office clerk and eventually held the position of office manager. His mother, Margaret Mary (Furey) Ward, was neurasthenic and increasingly dependent on alcohol. Young Sax Rohmer received no formal schooling until he was nine or ten years old, but his father probably taught his son to read. Rohmer adopted the name Sarsfield at the age of 18, impressed by his mother's alcoholic claims being descended from a famous 17th-century Irish general Patrick Sarsfield. He later explained that the pen name came from 'sax' which was Saxon for 'blade' and 'rohmer' which meant 'roamer'.

Sax Rohmer (1883-1959)
Sax Rohmer, aka British journalist Arthur Sarsfield Ward, invented literature's most devillish arch-fiend when he introduced the deliciously sinister Dr. Fu-Manchu in 1912. What's more, when nearing the age of 70 he even exposed our unsuspecting world to a female counterpart of the devil doctor. Sumuru appeared in 1950, and forever after scholars have debated which is the more tasteful title: The English edition "The Sins of Sumuru" or the American "Nude in Mink". You can't but admire a pensioner that can think up titles like that! Our own effort, the upcoming WHIO episode named "The Insidious Cheese" - although bold - somehow falls a little short. But in due time, we will get it right. Then it's our turn to autograph books wrapped in silk dressing robes, unlit pipes thrust firmly between our stiff upper lips! So there!
After being out of print for far too long, Fu-Manchu is now back. Here's the three first novels:
The Insidious Dr. Fu-Manchu

Sax Rohmer
Profile
Novelist, born Arthur Henry Ward in Birmingham on 15 February 1883, the son of Irish immigrant parents who moved to London in 1886. Little is known of his early life except that he had an ambition to serve in the Civil Service in the East. On failing the entrance examination he progressed from being a clerk to more literary pursuits, including writing for the music hall. His early success with short stories led to his writing The sins of Severac Babylon , a serial that appeared in Cassell,s Magazine in 1912 under his new pseudonym, Sax Rohmer. His early interest in Oriental mysticism was used this enthusiasm in most of his subsequent work. Fu Manchu, his most memorable character, became very popular and appeared in fifteen books. The villain was the leader of a secret society at Limehouse, in the East End of London, and first appeared in The Mystery of Dr. Fu Manchu , serialized 1912-13 and published in book form a year later. Arthur Ward dabbled in further theatrical writing and adaptation but found that the niche he had created with exotic oriental thrillers was a winner and magazine serializations continued to appear until after World War II. When such publishing was on the wane, he moved to the USA, in 1947, where there were many more opportunities for radio and film work. He sold the media rights to Fu Manchu for four million dollars in 1955.

Hypnosis in Media : the Fu Manchu series by Sax Rohmer (fiction)
Listing version 12.0
The Fu Manchu novels: the former Chinese mandarin, Fu Manchu, was part of (and possibly master of) a secretive Oriental organization dedicated to conquering the world, supported by a host of nefarious Middle Eastern and Oriental criminal organizations. His greatest nemesis was British investigator Sir Dennis Nayland Smith. Fu Manchu was particularly known for his hypnotic jade green eyes: Nayland Smith was one of the few people who meet his gaze without falling under their hypnotic power. At first, I only wanted to to list only the novels in which hypnosis played even a minor role, but then I realized that Fu Manchu's forceful, hypnotic personality was so much a part of his character that it was an underlying theme in most every book. Click here for another take on character of Fah Lo Suee from a stronger hypno-fetish viewpoint.
  • "The Bride of Fu Manchu"
  • "The Daughter of Fu Manchu" The beautiful daughter of Fu Manchu, Fah Lo Suee, uses her father's organization and her own seductive powers of hypnosis to follow in her father's footsteps of world conquest.
  • "The Hand of Fu Manchu" Through an off-camera induction of an Oriental form of animal magnetism, actually hypnosis aided by Oriental drugs, Dr. Petrie, companion of Fu Manchu's nemesis Nayland Smith, is induced to shoot Smith, under the illusion that he is actually shooting Fu Manchu. The induction was performed by Ki-Ming, an enemy of Fu Manchu, and triggered by Ki-Ming's appearance at Petrie's window. The murder attempt was foiled because Smith had noted Petrie's actions and appearance after the kidnaping earlier that was to facilitate the hypnotic induction and suspected foul play of this sort, and took the precaution of unloading Petrie's pistol.
