eflecting on the choice of male subjects for most of her novels, Mary Renault once said simply, "Men have more fun." Interestingly, the author remembered today for creating some of the earliest, most positive depictions of gay male love in fiction was a lesbian who started her career writing novels with lesbian undertones. Born Eileen Mary Challans in 1905, Renault was the daughter of a London physician. However, it wasn't her father's career, she later said, that influenced her to train as a nurse after her graduation from Oxford University in 1928. Instead, she was looking for colorful characters and exciting experiences to enrich her creative writing, which was her real passion. As a student, she had written a novel set in medieval times, inspired in part by the lectures of one of her professors, J.R.R. Tolkien. But she thought her finished work lacked authenticity, and she burned the manuscript. In nursing school at the Radcliffe Infirmary near Oxford, Renault found not only ample subjects for fiction but also her life partner - Julie Mullard, seven years her junior. When Renault took on the task of writing a play for the school's 1934 Christmas program and created a role especially for Mullard, whom she admired, the two became friends and then lovers. They secretly consummated their relationship in Mullard's room after a party that holiday season, beginning a lifelong union.

As at least one poster has indicated no prior knowledge of the work of Mary Renault, I thought it might be useful to post some details from the handbooks, as follows:- From: Jenny Stringer (ed.) and Joan Sutherland (intr.), *The Oxford Companion to Twentieth-Century Literature in English* (Oxford and New York : Oxford University Press 1996), p. 566, column 2: "RENAULT, Mary, pseudonym of Mary CHALLANS (1905-83), British novelist, born in London, educated at St Hugh's College, Oxford. She settled in South Africa after the Second World War. Her first five books were romantic novels. Travels in Greece led her to the work for which she is best known: eight carefully researched historical novels set in ancient Greece and Asia Minor. Her usual method - familiar, but in her case vividly effective - was to invent a fictional first-person narrator close to the great men of his age. *The King Must Die* (1958) and *The Bull from the Sea* (1962) retell the legend of Theseus.
*The Last of the Wine* (1956), *The Mask of Apollo* (1966), and *The Praise

Get Thee to Greece
by Elinor Hoefs Why Reading Mary Renault Right Now
Might Not Be Such a Bad Idea
While London burned each created a mythical world out of whole cloth which still provides entertainment, escape, and possibly even hope. Tolkien’s Hobbit books and Lewis’s Narnia books have already outlasted the troubled and troublesome "thousand-year Reich" which brought death and destruction to so much of the world. A third, lesser-known British writer who came of age as the bombs fell on England was so busy as a nurse during the war that her own escapist literary monument had to wait until the fighting was over. Though she had already published several mainstream novels before the war, Mary Renault until some 21st century Steve Jobs comes up with a real one and some 21st century Bill Gates "appropriates" it for the mass market. Scholars harp on and nit-pick about various details of ancient Greece which they claim Renault got wrong. No matter, because what she got right, absolutely convincingly right, was an entire vanished world. Turn off the TV, pick up

Mary Renault, Fire from Heaven (Random House, 1977)
Mary Renault, Funeral Games (Pantheon, 1981)
Mary Renault, The Persian Boy (Vintage, 1988) This trilogy is an outstanding work of historical fiction, chronicling the life of Alexander the Great. I read it two years ago and I still feel the power of Renault's recreation. I stand amazed on the battlefield of Gaugamela while the mighty Darius, king of Persia, flees ignominiously from an army he outnumbers almost 5 to 1. I still feel the stifling Babylonian night wrapping around me like a scratchy wool blanket as Alexander lies shivering with cold. He is ill. No, he's poisoned. No, he's cursed! Alexander the Great lived in the mid-300s BC in Macedon, a small country north of Greece. His father, Philip of Macedon, ruled there and was a skilled military strategist in his own right. But the world had never seen anything like the man Alexander grew into: he was a military genius, daring and imaginative. He conquered most of the then-known world, and some sources report that he cried when there was no more to conquer. He tried to unite the lands of Greece and Persia, and died at age 33. Let me make it clear from the start that Renault's Alexander is an idealized figure, bearing little resemblance to the ruthless megalomaniac usually portrayed in history books. Her Alexander is actually quite gentle, as well as being loving and tolerant. All the authorities I have read grant that he was a military genius, but they also emphasize that he was ambitious, merciless, vain, and possibly a reckless drunk on occasion. Mary Renault is the only writer I've ever read who treats him with such benign affection.

51. Mary Renault, The Last Of The Wine
mary renault, The Last of the Wine (Random House, 1981; Knopf, 2001). mary renaultis an outstanding historical novelist, concentrating primarily on Greece.
http://www.greenmanreview.com/lastofthewine.html
Mary Renault, The Last of the Wine (Random House, 1981; Knopf, 2001) What strikes me most about this historical novel is how vividly Mary Renault recreates ancient Athens. I believe her. I believe that men wore flowers in their hair to honor the gods, and that women were not supposed to be heard singing in their homes by male guests. And I believe every emotion of her fictional characters, their passion and despair and heartfelt joy. The place and time she takes me to is nothing like the America I know and I believe every word Renault says about it. The story takes place at the end of the 5th century BC, during the life of Socrates, and it is a moving love story cradled in a political/philosophical treatise rolled into a historical novel. The protagonist is Alexias, a young aristocratic boy, handsome and skilled in running. He becomes a disciple of Socrates and meets another of the philosopher's followers, Lysis, a man a few years older than himself. The two become friends and, eventually, lovers. The narrative follows Alexias as he grows from a boy of fourteen into a man, and spans perhaps six or eight years of his life. Renault deftly mixes the young mens' personal lives with the politics of the time. Their friendship grows while sitting at Socrates' feet; they participate in battles of the Peloponnesian War while coping with their sometimes uneasy relationship; and they struggle to survive the terrible Spartan siege of Athens. (Renault does a wonderful job of expressing the fear and uncertainty of war, and its terrible consequences.) They even compete in the Olympics. And they try to maintain their faith in democracy as Socrates drinks his hemlock.

Resent a fallacy as much as an insult.
In hatred as in love, we grow
like the thing we brood upon. What we loathe, we graft into our very soul. Never destroy without thought your enemy's pretenses, they are usually your best defense. The perpetual stream of human nature is formed into ever-changing shallows, eddies, falls and pools by the land over which it passes. From the back cover of the new edition:
The King Must Die is the scintillating story of the mythical hero Theseus, slayer of monsters, abductor of princesses, and king of Athens. He emerges from these pages as a clearly defined personality: Brave and aggressive, tough and quick, highly sexed and touchily proud. The core of the story is Theseus' Cretan adventure, and the book ends with his return to Athens after successfully going through the labyrinth and slaying the Minotaur.
