April 17, 2001 The Wind Done Gone, by Alice Randall. In all my years of publishing, I have never been faced with an attempt to block publication of any book, let alone a work with such an important and biting message. There was Pat Conroy, calling from a ship docked in Turkey to express his admiration for the novel. In an affidavit he sent to the court, he wrote, "I read it with pleasure and laughed out loud at its clever inversions and insider jokes on the themes of GWTW ." Nobel laureate Toni Morrison described Randall’s prose as being "by turns evocative, wry, plangent." James Carroll weighed in with a Boston Globe op-ed piece that said Randall’s book brings "vividly to life the people who move on the margins of Gone With the Wind . . . . a rebuttal" to "the most damning lie America has ever told itself." And Henry Louis Gates Jr. has said, " The Wind Done Gone is a classic parody, in a long line of literary creations that extend back to the ancient Greeks."

Randall is also a songwriter for Nashville artists and perhaps it is in the jaunty ability of country songs to be both ironic and stupid at the same time that she found her original intent for this so-called "parody." I would have written something original and simply added my distinctive voice to the black pantheon if I were her. But I'm not, and so all I can say is that this is a good book that deserves to stand on its own and not as the ill-tempered illegitimate successor to one of America's best-known novels.

On the Event of Alice Randall's reading at The Poetry Center, she was interviewed by F Newsmagazine, the student newspaper of The School of the Art Institute of Chicago
Parody on Trial: Alice Randall Writing In-Sanity
All eyes are on first time novelist, Alice Randall, and her bid to have her book, The Wind Done Gone, released from the throes of the American Courts. The Wind Done Gone is a parody of Margaret Mitchell's 1936 novel, Gone with The Wind, which is considered by many one of the hallmarks of great American literature about the slave south. Randall chose to parody GWTW, after years of coping with what she has termed the "racist lies and racist language" of the text.
In April, a federal judge, agreeing with the Mitchell Trusts, blocked publication of Randall's novel. The U.S. Court of Appeals in Atlanta overturned the injunction in May, allowing for the book's publication. Despite borrowing several scenes and lines of dialogue from the original novel, Randall and her publishers insist the book is an original work of serious parody and is protected by the First Amendment.
Several academic and literary heavyweights have come out in support of Randall, including Toni Morrison, Harper Lee, Arthur Schlessinger, and Ishmael Reed. Randall, though upset that the book is in legal conflict, said that the support from the literary world has been wonderful. "It meant that people who create things understood what I was doing, that I was not stealing from someone who created. Writers understood what I was doing, and that was tremendous to me," Randall said. "I have a right to speak my mind, to speak in contradiction, to give another point of view."

About Alice Randall Alice Randall was born in Detroit, Michigan, in an enclave of Motown populated almost exclusively with refugees from Alabama. She grew up in Washington, D.C., and then attended Harvard University, from which she graduated in 1981 with an honors degree in English and American literature. In 1983 she moved to Nashville to become a country songwriter. The only African-American woman in history to write a number-one country song, she has had over twenty songs recorded, including two top ten records and a top forty. Her work includes the only known recorded country songs to explore the subject of lynching ("The Ballad of Sally Ann"), mention Aretha Franklin in the same line as Patsy Cline ("XXX's and OOO's: An American Girl"), and give tribute to both the slave dead and the Confederate dead ("I'll Cry for Yours, Will You Cry for Mine?"). Ms. Randall is also a produced screenwriter (a movie of the week for CBS) and has worked on adaptations of Their Eyes Were Watching God Parting the Waters , and Brer Rabbit The entire family is involved in documenting and preserving the history of people of color in the American South, with particular interest in the history of enslaved women and enslaved children and in the formerly enslaved who went on to striking academic achievement or whose children did. They have lectured, researched, consulted, and written about these topics, and have served on the boards of a variety of museums, historic houses, and institutions concerned with preserving and documenting the lives of enslaved people and their descendants, including Belle Meade Plantation, Carnton, the Hermitage (Andrew Jackson's home), Traveler's Rest, the Metro Historic Commission (of Nashville), the African-American Historical and Genealogical Association, the Family Cemetery Project, the Andrew Jackson's Slave Descendent Project, and Fisk University.

e-mail this article A mid an unbelievable amount of legal wrangling and political posturing, there's this little book called The Wind Done Gone You may have heard of it. Gone With the Wind , a sacrilegious retelling of a literary classic or a revisionist history of a vastly overrated, racist melodrama. Before it's even available to be bought or borrowed, the book has sparked international media attention and ignited a firestorm of debate about whether it should be published at all. Now that an appeals court judge has cleared the way, Houghton Mifflin promises that books will be in stores by the end of this month. Pretty much lost in all that rancor is the question of whether The Wind Done Gone is a good book. Does it stand on its own literary merit? The easy answer is no. But nothing about this book has been easy. Randall, a Harvard graduate and successful songwriter, says she wrote the book so black and white Americans could have a "healing belly laugh" and ostensibly move on with our collective and conflicted lives. No doubt, snippets from

OPINION
Alice Randall, you go girl! By Jeffrey Shaffer
PORTLAND, ORE. Alice Randall is an author who has discovered that real life can be more surprising and ironic than fiction. Ms. Randall's novel "The Wind Done Gone" was scheduled for release in June by Houghton Mifflin. It's the story of a mulatto woman on a plantation who, according to news reports, "might be a half-sister of Scarlett O'Hara." Needless to say, when wind of this tale drifted southward, it fanned some smoldering legal embers. I feel a strong artistic connection to Alice Randall because she clearly shares the same curiosity that I experience while trekking across the landscape of literature. It's a vast territory of ideas, adventures, and personalities. The only boundaries are the limits of human imagination. Anyone who reads a novel or short story is carried into this world, and some of us wonder about unexplored settings, alternative plot twists, and supplemental characters. Is it possible Scarlett O'Hara had mixed-race siblings? What other family secrets were lurking behind closed doors at Tara? While I have only mused about such questions looming throughout the pages of previously published material, Alice Randall set to work resolving some of them.

The Wind Done Gone, By Alice Randall From the cover: In this daring and provocative literary parody, which has captured the interest and imagination of a nation, Alice Randall explodes the world created in Gone With the Wind , a work that more than any other has defined our image of the antebellum South. Taking sharp aim at the romanticized, whitewashed mythology perpetrated by this Southern classic, Randall has ingeniously conceived a multi-layered, emotionally complex tale of her own – that of Cynara, the mulatto half-sister, who, beautiful and born into slavery, manages to break away from her damaging world of the Old South to emerge into full life as a daughter, a lover, a mother, a victor. The Wind Done Gone is a passionate love story, a wrenching portrait of a tangled mother-daughter relationship, and a book that “celebrates a people’s emancipation not only from bondage but also from history and myth, custom and stereotype” (San Antonio Express-News) List price is $12.00 but at leftbooks.com it’s 15 % off, only$9.99. Mariner Books, By Alice Randall, ISBN 0-618-21906-4, Soft Cover, 210 p.p.
