Caryl Phillips's The Atlantic Sound by Doug Childers
In his second nonfiction book, Caryl Phillips travels to the three points of the transatlantic slave trade and through strong reportage shows us why he deserves comparison to great 'travel' writers like Jonathan Raban and V.S. Naipaul. C aryl Phillips has written six superb novels, and now, with The Atlantic Sound , he shows once again that he can write equally compelling, thematically complicated nonfiction (his other nonfiction title is The European Tribe ). His subject this time out is (in large part) the transatlantic slave trade, and in the course of the book, he travels to Liverpool; Accra, Ghana; and Charleston, South Carolina. Together, these three locations formed the points of a trading 'triangle': Goods, be they guns, glassware, iron bars or liquor, would be exported from England to the West coast of Africa, where they would be sold in exchange for human captives. The second leg of the 'triangle,' or the 'middle passage', involved the transportation of the captives to

Week 10 - Caryl Phillips, Crossing the River
Caryl Phillips is a black British author, born in the West Indies (St. Kitts) and brought to England when two months old, brought up and educated in Britain. Brought up as a British subject, he still remembers being told in the 1960’s, when racism was at its worst in Britain that he did not belong here. So where did he belong? - the West Indies, where his grandparents had worked as slaves, Africa, where his great, great grandparents had been sold into slavery?
Unbelonging and the continuing history of racism are the main themes of his work, but his mode of expression employs both postcolonial and postmodern strategies, to present what Edward Said has called the “overlapping territories” and “intertwined histories” of colonizer and colonized: So vast and yet so detailed is imperialism as an experience with crucial cultural dimensions, that we must speak of overlapping territories, intertwined histories common to men and women, whites and non-whites, dwellers in the metropolis and the peripheries, past as well as present and future; these territories and histories can only be seen from the perspective of the whole of secular human history. (Edward Said, Culture and Imperialism , p. 72)

An Interview With CARYL PHILLIPS
Erika J. Waters
The following interview was conducted by telephone on Dec. 15, 1994. Caryl Phillips was in Amherst, Massachusetts and Erika Waters was in St. Croix.
EW: I understand that you felt that you had to read before you actually started writing and that you read a great deal. Do you think that is an important place for writers to start?
CP: Absolutely. I think reading and writing are intimately connected, so definitely. New writers are defining themselves as writers by reading what other people have written, in a sense trying to write books that have not been written already. So you have to be aware of the gaps.
EW: Right. Do you have advice for writers, particularly who don't find success as easily as you did? Do you think they should persevere?
CP: They should persevere, but I don't think they should write with the understanding that they are going to make a living out of it. Not really. It depends what you consider to be success. If success for you is only quantifiable in terms of money, then I think that probably you are doing the wrong thing. Money shouldn't be the criteria for success in writing. Unfortunately, we are in a commercially orientated world and it's a fact of life that people have to live and have to eat. They need money. I don't think that the ability to support oneself with writing necessarily relates directly to how good or how successful or influential a writer would be.

An Interview With CARYL PHILLIPS: INTRODUCTION
Reinhard W. Sander
Since 1980 he has written and produced numerous plays and documentaries for the stage, radio and television, and he has published five novels and a collection of essays. His work has met with early praise in the form of major awards, among them the 1984 BBC Giles Cooper Award for his radio play The Wasted Years , the 1985 Malcolm X Prize for literature for his first novel, The Final Passage , the 1987 Martin Luther King Memorial Prize for literature for his essay collection The European Tribe , and the 1992 London Sunday Times Young Writer of the Year nomination for the novel Cambridge . His most recent novel, Crossing the River , was shortlisted for the 1993 Booker Prize and received the 1994 James Tait Black Memorial Prize. Also in 1994, his oeuvre as a whole won the prestigious Lannan Literary Award for fiction. In addition, he has been the recipient of an Arts Council of Great Britain Bursary (1984), a British Council Fiftieth Anniversary Fellowship (1984), a Guggenheim Foundation Fellowship (1992), and a Rockefeller Foundation Bellagio Residency (1993). In spite of these achievements, Phillips remains healthily self-critical: "The reason I set out to write hasn't been achieved yet. I set out to create or attempt to create a body of work in drama and prose that I think is the best body of work I could possibly produce, out of the peculiar relationship between myself, my history, and my environment. That's an ongoing process."

wunderbare Liste!
Ich bin gerade mittendrin in seinem neuesten Buch, einer Essay-Sammlung: "A NEW WORLD ORDER", kann mich diesem Urteil aus dem Einband nur anschliessen: “[Phillips] writes wonderfully crafted, deeply meditative treatises on the black experience in a global and historical sense. . . . [He is] intellectual and reflective but always interesting and informative.” –Quarterly Black Review Amazon-Inhaltsangabe:
"The Africa of his ancestry, the Caribbean of his birth, the Britain of his upbringing, and the United States where he now lives are the focal points of award-winning writer Caryl Phillips’ profound inquiry into evolving notions of home, identity, and belonging in an increasingly international society.
At once deeply reflective and coolly prescient, A New World Order charts the psychological frontiers of our ever-changing world. Through personal and literary encounters, Phillips probes the meaning of cultural dislocation, measuring the distinguishing features of our identities–geographic, racial, national, religious–against the amalgamating effects of globalization. In the work of writers such as V. S. Naipaul, James Baldwin, and Zadie Smith, cultural figures such as Steven Spielberg, Linton Kwesi Johnson, and Marvin Gaye, and in his own experiences, Phillips detects the erosion of cultural boundaries and amasses startling and poignant insights on whether there can be an answer anymore to the question “Where are you from?” The result is an illuminating–and powerfully relevant–account of identity from an exceedingly perceptive citizen of the world."
