Alicia Suskin Ostriker: Alicia Suskin Ostriker is one of America's premier poets and critics. She is the author of nine previous volumes of poetry, including The Crack in Everything (1996) and The Little Space: Poems Selected and New, 1968-1998 (1998), both finalists for the National Book Award, and The Imaginary Lover (1986), winner of the William Carlos Williams Award. About the volcano sequence "This is one of those poems the world of literature occasionally has the good fortune to receive that doesn't so much sum up a life as embody it.... This is a book with a voice of its own; it is a prayer to God, and a hymn of accusation for the lapses of divinity; it is a psalm of praise for the life of the flesh, and a mourning for life's fleetingness. More importantly, Ostriker finds, and offers us, a heartening solace in the rigor of her regard."
C. K. Williams
Elaine Pagels
Diane Middlebrook
"Ostriker is our morning-after psalmist; our wild, justice-starved, embodied, dazzling intelligence in its unending argument with itself, the world, and God. And these poems, in their sustained, incremental power, deliver what our Biblical and poetic tradition failed to offer us: after great struggle, a daughter's at-onement with her mother."

http://www.grdodge.org/poetry/content_Ostriker.htm

"Ethically, I am looking for an absolute endorsement of loving-kindness."
ALICIA OSTRIKER’s poems have been praised for their candor and for their unshirking exploration of what it means to be at once a woman, mother, wife, professor, critic, and poet. Her latest collection, The Little Space: Poems Selected and New, 1968-1998 (1998), gathers work from eight earlier volumes and was a finalist for the National Book Award. Just as her poetry imports observations from her academic interests, her criticism connects her personal experience and gender to her reading of literature. A scholar of Blake and the Bible, and a noted feminist thinker and critic, she is perhaps best known for her writing on women poets and for her re-readings of the Bible from the perspective of a modern, Jewish woman. The recipient of fellowships from the Guggenheim and Rockefeller Foundations, Alicia Ostriker lives in Princeton, New Jersey and teaches English and creative writing at Rutgers University. Four poems "Mastectomy," "What was Lost," "Healing," and "Nevertheless," at the Breast Cancer Answer site

BERKELEY: YOUTH AND AGE

Winter cabbages blooming in pots
In front of banks and restaurants,
The fashion in Berkeley, it’s just like New York,
The world grows smaller and more reassuring,
All this purple and green leafiness
To supplement brokers and panhandlers,
Or do I merely mean more ornamental
While far less reassuring? Now I watch

ALICIA OSTRIKER: POEMS FOR THE TIME
(an anthology)
Dear Dennis,
When I can't stand political and journalistic rhetoric any longer, I turn
to poems. I don't believe poetry is therapeutic, but I do think it is
diagnostic. Poems clarify, whether we like it or not. Here are some I
have gathered, from various sources. May they be useful to others.
Yours truly,
Alicia Ostriker
Alicia Ostriker wrote the introduction for the book, "Poetry After 9/11: An Anthology of New York Poets," which also features her poem, "the window, at the moment of flame." The book is published by Melville House Books, and is available here

Women's Health Summary This series of 12 related poems constitutes the final section of Ostriker's collection, The Crack in Everything. In the first poem, the mammogram positive and her surgery scheduled, the poet crosses "The Bridge" to the hospital. In "The Gurney" she goes under. "Riddle: Post Op" begins: "A-tisket a-tasket / I'm out of my casket . . . . " The poet teases us by asking what the secret is "underneath my squares of gauze." The answer: "Guess what it is / It's nothing." Subsequent poems include a lament over "What Was Lost," "Wintering," "Healing," and an "Epilogue: Nevertheless." In the wonderful "Years of Girlhood (for My Students)," Ostriker begins: "All the years of girlhood we wait for them. / Impatient to catch up, to have the power / Inside our sweaters to replace our mother." But in the end, a year later, the poet is well again and tells her friends, "I'm fine, I say, I'm great, I'm clean. / The bookbag on my back, I have to run." ("Epilogue: Nevertheless").

Univ. of Pittsburgh, paper, $12.95 (0-8229-5784-1). 811. Ostriker, an essential voice in American letters, is on fire in her tenth volume of poetry, a wildly expressive dialogue with the God of the Old Testament. The volcano is her unifying symbol, a potent metaphor for the upwelling of the soul of every woman who has questioned God’s intentions, methods, and reconditeness. Ostriker even gives the earth a mother’s voice so that she can protest her slow death as humans so thoughtlessly devour her. Daughters, mothers, and the shekhinah , the feminine aspect of God, stride and chide their way across these molten pages as the poet argues with Him as though he were a recalcitrant lover or sly adversary. Ostriker witnesses births and watches her mother grow old in poems that are urgent, seamless, and searing, utterly thrilling in their forthrightness, soulfulness, and incandescence. — Donna Seaman (Booklist/March 1, 2002)
