The Many Roads to Japan, my novella for ESL students and teachers, can now be ordered in paperback from Jacobyte Books, or read as a free online e-book. Click here for info on downloading. Available in HTML, PDF, Rocket eBook and REB 1100, or read it online. Hello and welcome to my home page. Thanks for dropping by. I am the author of two expatriate novels, a novella used as a textbook in Japanese universities, and several articles on teaching English as a foreign language. My first novel Looking for the Summer, the story of a Vietnam War conscientious objector's adventures and search for identity on the road from Paris to Calcutta in 1977, is published as both an e-book and a paperback by Jacobyte Books . It was first published in print by Touka Shobo in 1996, but that edition is out of print now. Christine Hall, editor at Alternative Approaches Magazine, wrote: "During the waning years of the Ford administration, a rather unlikely alliance was struck up between an American, an Iranian, and an Afghani.... Within weeks of this chance meeting, the American protagonist would find himself traveling overland to Iran, and then on to Afghanistan, Pakistan and eventually India, where the tale reaches a hopeful conclusion amid the squalor and depravity of Calcutta.... Books. Audio. ... Email NHI Review Web design by Gerald England This page last updated: 7th May 2002. ROBERT W NORRIS: LOOKING FOR THE SUMMER Though nominally a novel, LOOKING FOR THE SUMMER is a book that falls between many stools - novel, autobiography, travelogue and philosophical tract. It is obvious that David is the fictional counterpart of the author, and if only half of the events in the book are based on events and experiences in his life then he is a man who has lived life to the full. The book isn't perfect - the writing style veers between telling the story and lecturing on the philosophies met during the travels. At times the narrative is trite and over-detailed, at others, raw and emotionally blistering, written while the memories were still fresh. A book to check out, I think, especially if you enjoy investigating the real world.

eBook/Multiple Formats Very highly recommended 5 stars David Thompson, son of a WWII vet, enlisted in the Air Force after he received a low draft lottery number that he supposed would lead to his being soon drafted during the Vietnam War. Because Thompson realized himself not willing to participate in combat he was soon court-martialed and given a year prison sentence to serve. The psychological damage he has given himself by the decision to take a conscientious objector stance is taking it's toll. While Thompson was able to evade either becoming wounded or damaging others from his determination for not going into combat, self blame is troubling him during the time the book is taking place. Thompson's experience has left him not knowing what he believe. He is questioning the dogma of his religious beliefs as well as that of the politics of the U S. Troubling to Thompson is the fact that he is thought to be a coward by his dad, himself and others. He makes his way to Paris during the period of the Carter presidency, the late 1970s, in an earnest attempt to comprehend the world he finds himself no longer able to understand. He hopes to write a book chronicling his discoveries as he travels the road to grasping the changes he is facing. Thompson is of the opinion that destiny or perhaps divine guidance is at work when he decides to accept an offer tendered by an Afghan and an Iranian to visit their countries. The dangerous journey he undertakes is enlightening, and, he hopes will take him to the answers he is seeking. David not only encountered unrest in the areas he visited, but found himself soon taking part in a battle in the land dominated by the Shah.

The year is 1983. The place is the Kobe-Osaka area. A 33-year-old American drifter and Vietnam War veteran has just arrived in Japan seeking one more adventure and an escape from his past. A promiscuous, rebellious, 23-year-old Japanese woman has just returned from a two-year homestay in a Canadian mission, where she was sent by her parents to cure her suicidal behavior. A snobbish, upper-class, 22-year-old Japanese woman who cannot distinguish between fantasy and reality is about to graduate from university and enter the frightening world of adulthood. Three people searching for a place to belong. Three people dancing on a psychological highwire. Three people about to become enmeshed in a relationship that will change each of their lives forever. Toraware is a special novel that takes a penetrating look at the obsessions, suspense, grief, misunderstandings, and joys of people from very different cultures and backgrounds who are brought together by fate to find the separate life paths they must follow.

Looking for the Summer is a graceful autobiographical novel that breathes fresh life into a perennial genre: the spiritual bildungsroman The Dharma Bums
Lacking the brash self-confidence of a radical firebrand, David is something of a holy fool slouching toward wisdom via the Keatsian mode of negative capability. He sees himself as “representative of a new, lost, paranoid generation.” As his travels immerse him further in Third World geopolitical tensions and complex ideological struggles, he begins to question his own motivations for the choices he’s made. When an underground cell of Iranian dissidents embraces David for his perceived anti-Americanism, he confesses to them: “I can honestly tell you that fear and cowardice played a much larger role than courage in taking my stand."
For a narrative that revels in sometimes long-winded philosophical and political discussions, Looking for the Summer
Looking for the Summer
is the kind of small press gem that is often overlooked but is well worth seeking out.
